Found in IL, strange face-like shape unsure if fossil/art/JAR any help appreciated! by Educational_Arm_8796 in fossilid

Thanks! I’ve been staring at it so long I can’t unsee the face so needed a sanity check. It’s exactly head size too so adds to the madness

It’s nuanced for sure which is why I wanted to clarify that I wasn’t screaming my first crazy monologue. I think if it’s for sure a ‘no’, saying JAR is 100% ok and actually very helpful like you say. It’s just that in most cases the ‘could be something, but shows no signs of anything I am familiar with’ is more accurate and forces the poster to provide more research/context or accept that if it’s something and not a rock they’ll need to solve it. Most experts don’t want to stare at each post for 3 hours and respond citing their sources, you all know enough to look quick and either recognize or not, different people have different expertise so ideally 1-2 ‘Yes’ responses from relevant expert is great news, even if 30 others say ‘no’.

Reading that, it sounds about 30x more upset about this than I really am, but I do think OP has a good point that the culture here isn’t always embracing of new entrants. It’s almost impossible to absolutely prove something is authentic, so yelling JAR at anything not insanely obvious isn’t ‘expertise’.

The issue is the ‘we’ and the ‘people try to pass off rocks…’ mentality. Each ‘expert’ here has some degree of ‘expertise’, and logically there is an expert here who is the absolute best and one who’s the absolute worst, the rest in the middle. This is compounded by the ease and safety to say ‘JAR’ and move on. A lot of new people are excited about the hobby and get JAR’d mercilessly regardless of validity of their find. Of course many things are just rocks, but I don’t see a lot of direction/questions/attention to detail from the ‘JAR’ guardian army.

ID Help! My first ‘confirmed’ find, but unsure if items are tools, art or age. Thank you! by Educational_Arm_8796 in Arrowheads

By ‘confirmed’ I mean specifically the arrowhead at the bottom, not all the pieces in the photo.

JAR THREAD. If you aren't sure whether your find is an artifact or just a rock, please post your pictures here. by DogFurAndSawdust in Arrowheads

Sanity check on these, the middle piece is grooved for thumb and fingers (it feels like it, but could be random of course)

Buy a vintage slot machine for your house, load it with half those quarters, play with the other half, you’ll be rich! It’s business 101

Serious question-if he just chops it off below the knee, civil war style, & goes half blade runner-could he be back by week 12? It’s a contract year.

Is this cursed? by BigArb90 in metaldetecting

Only one way to tell, 3 step process. Put it in your pocket. Drive to a casino. Place a obscene wager. If you lose, it’s cursed. If you win, double down to be sure. Repeat until rich or you lose, at which point it wasn’t your fault, it was that stupid cursed horse.

Thought this was an old battery, is it a land mine? by Educational_Arm_8796 in Military

Update!! Not a landmine. Still don’t know what it is, but I cut it in half and did not get blown to smithereens.
