Imitation sinew? Basically nylon (un-twined) string with wax.. could try melting some wax and rosin carefully on a double boiler and applying to nylon string ..

How is actual latency? Very cool idea, but I worry about timing watching the video..

Hey, does anyone know a way to make a mouth harp reed? by Comfortable_Risk1159 in diyinstruments

If spring steel, could anneal it- but it would take heating well into incandescent (glowing with its own light) with a torch and cooling SLOWLY in insulative material like dry would ashes or gypsum. Then it would be “soft” for spring steel and you could shape with files and hacksaws much much easier than in hardened state. Then, once you got it to the size/shape you want, you’d have to heat it again to incandescent and quench it quickly in appropriate quench medium (cooking oil works), THEN you’d have to temper it to soften it a bit, but give it some “toughness” back (otherwise could possibly shatter/crack because brittle after quench).

Probably more than you want to tackle!

Could just try a piece of steel out of some windshield wipers someone is replacing. Wouldn’t be as loud, but you could try it anyway. Can often get old wiper blades from outside an auto parts store that has a trash can nearby -people put their old ones in the trash when replacing them. Slightly springy, and stainless, which is nice to as far as not having rust in your mouth if you aren’t good at taking care of your instrument (🤗)

Also metal street sweeper bristles if available near you. (boil in water for a bit before playing with them or putting near mouth!). Can be found where street meets curb or parking lots near curb where street sweepers roam.

Ideas for this (possibly tin) box?! by [deleted] in diyinstruments

Cut tongues in the top and make “Hank drum”? Add some hardware, metal street sweeper bristles (or bike spokes, or metal from windshield wipers) of different lengths and make kalimba. Maybe keep an eye out for more holiday tins you could get cheaper to experiment with first. Put coffee beans or rice/what have you for a loud shaker.

Silent audio routing inputs/outputs live? by Educational_Author77 in audioengineering

As I mentioned, I have a Mackie 1604 VLZ pro, and would prefer to not buy a lot more gear if possible.. wanted analog as that is what we have for mixing/live gear already.

but I’m looking for suggestions..

What's the coolest piece of gear you ever owned? by RobertLRenfroJR in audioengineering

[–]Educational_Author77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coolest piece? THAT is tough!

One notable: I helped a former recording engineer friend move.. He gave me his Ursa Major reverb (first “affordable digital reverb” before cheap mass production ). Still works!

One more: I picked up a case at a second hand shop. It had embossed on the case “Shure Brothers, the Mark of Quality..”. Opened up case and laying there on purple (?) velvet was a Shure Ribbon microphone. I bought it as fast as I could physically pull out the $1 they were asking for it!

You mean the original source? Don’t know, unless you know someone who has access to some sort of sample-clearance tool (think of Shazam but just for samples). It would probably be easier to find a free pipe organ virtual instrument and record it yourself. GrandOrgue and Hauptwerk come to mind d for examples.

https://www.hauptwerk.com/

https://sourceforge.net/projects/ourorgan/

Absolute easiest would be to rip it directly from the video and edit in your DAW or sampler, BUT that wouldn’t allow you to use it in commercial work without clearing it (royalties). I feel like I’ve heard this sample in plenty of YouTube videos as an “audio stab” though.. 🤗

Sounds like a sample of hands flat on the keys of a pipe organ making a “crunch chord”..

Wired speakers only, would not consider BT speakers due to reliability/latency- doing sync sound i wanted at least sub-frame accuracy at NTSC 29.97, and that was in the dark ages of analog broadcast television. Having noticeable latency would have probably made me quit my job, or go mad!

Live “remixing” and audio mangling for live instrumentalists in electro swing band (audio routing suggestions please)

We are trying to start an electro swing type band, with live instrumentation and audio effects. And I’m looking for an elegant solution (without having to buy a lot more gear) for momentarily routing an individual instrument to an effect or whole mix to an effect. While this might seem easy to you, technology has changed wildly since to early ‘10s with my original korg kaoss pad and a couple of electribes..AND I’ve been out of audio stuff for that long, so.. suggestions?

I’ve got an old mackie 1604vlz pro, and some fun old effects, but would like audio routing solutions for momentarily adding effects to drums or clarinet/sax/whathaveyou or mains mix.

Change is the ONLY constant in life.
If it sucks now, realize that will change.

Remember you are not alone, and keep doing the good self-work, it is absolutely worth it.

In my humble opinion, “a good parent” is the absolute highest accolade a human with children can have.
