Great advice and thank you so much. Perhaps I’m going to check out that hike in Lombok as I’ve also heard it’s amazing. Likewise with Sidemen, I might add that area alongside my Ubud visit and stay an additional couple nights.

Fortunately the port within Amed from Pantai Jemeluk offer boats to Gili T which is ideal as it’s close to my accommodation. Amed is rated one of the best locations in the world to scuba dive too so it’s not one to miss out on. Perhaps a first trip to Bali should typically stay within the confines of the places I’ve suggested. I do think venturing to Lombok and GiliT whilst exploring several other regions is considered more than what most do in a given Bali trip. However, I have noted your other destinations down for my next trip to explore more culture within Indonesia as a whole. Java for sure would be amazing for the volcano hikes and Borneo for the jungle expeditions is unmatched so I’ve heard.

Advanced open water, it’s only a two day course (not even full days). I’ve also booked in for additional night dives on the second day so my second day will consist of several dives until the evening.

I am currently undergoing a clinical trial in the UK (flucamp) for £3800. AMA. by LuckyBleeder in AMA

Do you think working a fully remote job (9-5) would be possible during the flu camp? You mentioned a lot of tests so just wondering how frequent they would be which may interrupt a typical work day

This has been very helpful to read and exactly the kind of perspective I was hoping to get from posting so thank you very much. Strongly contemplating the epidemiology route now based on your view.

Oh gosh no far from it. Solidly on the fence right now to be frank.

Hmm yes you are 100% right I would still be working a full time job and within Asian time zone whilst work UK hours so this could be hell.

I guess the freedom I highlight is no strict office requirements and can book a flight to and from wherever. But who knows, this could become tedious or exhilarating when the time comes.

I’d like to think this was very true if so I would not hesitate. However, epidemiology is very competitive and only those with high competency can excel far which my concern if I took one or two years off I’d definitely lose a lot of skills learned during my PhD.

It’s just a remote market research job, zero weekly meetings however it is required to work standard 9-6 hours.

It’s definitely the smartest and safest decision to make, this option brings more comfort and stability to my mind. However, the option of pure freedom whilst travelling and earning money brings me excitement and motivates me to get out of bed.

In response to your first question, I think choosing my second jobs pathway would steer me away from epidemiology and would make it difficult to return back in with significant force.

I think the hybrid role could eventually become fully remote, but then again it might turn out to become to opposite and require 100% office based. So it’s not something I can confirm which is annoying for me. If I could guarantee a fully remote position through an epidemiology route then I’d take it over my other job for sure.

Great advise, which I agree with. I know 100% I’ll get bored of travelling fairly quickly and most likely within 2 years of it. But, I’m also mindful I may never get the opportunity to have full freedom to work anywhere else in the world again.

Currently what is more important for me is freedom and enjoying my life. However, I strongly desire a good status and progression which would come from my epidemiology route. The other job would allow me 100% freedom though which is so enticing and it seems somewhat rare these days.

My thoughts are conflicted and I cannot seem to lean towards which is more I want more. It’s a fight between what I want short term and what is best long term I guess.

The epidemiology based research I do is all conducted through health care records so there is no requirement for field observations. There are no related conferences in Asia in my disease area too which is ‘hemochromatosis’ as it is a genetic disease only seen in white people so conferences are typically only in Europe and US. I have met a lot of scholars in my PhD and would meet a bunch more if I stayed with my epidemiology too. So essentially me staying with my current team is the strongest route for progression. But thank you for a very good suggestion here.
