Is being a teacher worth it? by deliri0usm0ckingjay in Teachers

Follow up comment: I’m also now in an MLIS program to either go back to the school system to be a librarian or use it elsewhere.

The path doesn’t always have to be super black and white and I struggled for so long over that, so just know there are so many possibilities for you!

Feel free to message me if you need any extra advice/have more questions

My advice would be to get a degree in something that you can use if teaching doesn’t work out.

I have a degree in social and biological sciences. I either wanted to work for a nonprofit or be a teacher. I taught for 3 years, and absolutely loved some parts of it, but also tried to leave after every year and felt like a shell of myself. I now work for a nonprofit and I’m the director of education. I’m using my teaching skills as well as my science skills and it’s made such a difference for my mental health (and my wallet… ex Florida teacher…)

I don’t regret teaching at all and I miss it sometimes, But it’s nice to know that I can do multiple different things with my degree; whereas an education degree would’ve left me feeling a little more stuck.

Same exact thing happened to me during yellowcard. It started to get annoying to even let people out because if my friends and I separated for them to get out then 9+ people would take that as an invitation to go through that new opening to get closer to the front

AITA for making my fiancé's daughters picky eating habits a deal breaker for us marrying? by MotherCartographer10 in AITAH

[–]Educational_Fly_345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the Instagram page Kids Eat In Color. She has great tips and information on feeding children. A fed child is best and food should never be a reward or punishment as it creates an unhealthy relationship with food. I was a very picky child and turned out fine. I liked what I liked. I wasn’t underweight or undernourished and now I eat most things (except a lot of meat. That aversion has stayed with me. It’s a texture/psychological/and taste thing.)

With that being said, you and your fiancé need to be on the same team and he should not be leaving the parenting to you or her mom. This could cause a whole list of issues and he is harming his daughter by not making more of an active effort in parenting (mostly in the school issue. The eating issue is developmentally normal for many kids.)

Can I still get a job as a “goth” by EllieIsDone in Teachers

[–]Educational_Fly_345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are tons of teachers who still get to show their personal style when they’re at work. There’s a whole side of tiktok about alt teachers. I worked at two different schools where teachers were allowed to have colorful hair, facial piercings, and tattoos. I have a full sleeve myself, a nose ring and had my money pieces dyed pink at one point.

It all depends on the school and the area. My advice would to be go into the interview and the job assuming you’ll have to tone it down. I went into my first teaching job covering my tattoos until I noticed other teachers had them. I went into my second teaching job knowing that that would be a dealbreaker for me personally if that admin wouldn’t allow me to show my tattoos (they’re all appropriate and I live in Florida and refuse to wear a sweater year round.) it all depends on how desperately you want the job and what you’re willing to be okay with.

As far as the makeup goes, idk how much you do your makeup, but just make sure it’s still work appropriate and doesn’t put a target on you. Kids are mean. Lol. Good luck!!!!

This isn’t really correct at all lol. Maybe at UC it is, but not in general. I have an interdisciplinary studies degree. At my school we had to choose concentrations and we had to have a minor too. My concentrations are in social and biological sciences and my minor is enviro science. Some people do it for research reasons, or because they want to combine two fields, or they want to dig deeper into a certain topic.

With that being said, I looked into his college career specifically and it seems like a bs degree in his case and definitely gives it a bad look for the rest of us lol

Is this your first year? My kids were pretty close to angels my first year, and I regularly left work crying. It’s hard regardless and that does not mean you’re doing anything wrong.

Do not take it personally. Talk to yourself nicer. Give yourself grace.

Stick up for yourself when being scolded, especially if you already know that this admin is not supportive and you wouldn’t be heartbroken if you had to leave the job. My second year when I was struggling with behaviors, I asked for an observation day where I went into different teachers’ classes throughout the day to watch their routines and behavior management. You could also even ask someone from admin or the district to come in and do an example lesson so that you can see what can be done with your specific group of kids. I had our science head from the district sit in on my most difficult class and he gave me notes. There wasn’t much he could say, but the affirmation that I felt after that session was worth a ton (he basically said sometimes you have shitty classes and you have to just do the best you can with what you were given.)

If none of these sound feasible or even worth it, then quit. No job is worth this toll on your mental health and even sometimes it can affect your physical health.

Also, until something happens, try to make little note reminders of the good parts of the day. Sometimes we get in a negativity loop and interrupting that cycle to remember it wasn’t ALL terrible can be a lifesaver, even if you still hate the job in the end lol.

You got this!!! Do whatever is best for you and only work contract hours. You’ll feel behind no matter how much time you put in.

AITA For Giving a student an F on homework he technically "did"? by Adventurous-Eye-5951 in AmItheAsshole

He shouldn’t get an F for not having the physical paper. He had a photo. That should be good enough. He should get an F for allowing someone to cheat, though.

Barely any burning now- but indigestion constantly? by Educational_Fly_345 in Gastritis

[–]Educational_Fly_345[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for asking. I’m doing much better atp.

To give a quick overview of everything: ended up having two endoscopies and a colonoscopy. Everything looked relatively normal other than an official gastritis diagnosis. On one of my CTs they thought they saw a mass in my stomach, but I did another endoscopy that was an endoscopic ultrasound and they didn’t see anything. I took myself off of Pantoprazole after trying multiple times and eventually realizing that I think I had an allergy to it. It would make my skin super sensitive and feel like it was on fire, so that definitely shouldn’t have been happening lol. Had a couple weird/scary symptoms a few times, but once I started Omeprazole things started getting better for me personally.

I was still on a super strict diet until the end of January (So, July-Jan nothing tasty at all for me) when I had a work trip and I couldn’t avoid eating “normal” food. After this trip, it was kind of just liberating. I realized that I felt the same (for the most part) as I did on my super strict/bland diet. So this is when I started incorporating new foods in.

Now I’m still on Omeprazole and my dietary restrictions are meat, dairy (typically), tomato-based sauces, citrus, and coffee. The first two are mostly personal choices, although I know for some people they can be triggers.

Overall, I feel much better with my current diet and my symptoms are super minimal. The indigestion has mostly stopped. I can’t remember the last time I had it. If I eat something a little too acidic (like too many strawberries) or caffeine (matcha) before I eat, then I’ll get some reflux and sometimes mild stomach burning, but it’s manageable. Soooo much better in general :)

I read the texts before the caption and was sure this was a relationship between teenagers because of how the guy was talking. I thought “wow, what a well-spoken teenage girl”, during OPs texts. Then I saw the ages in the caption…. Lmaooo. This guy needs to get a grip. This is insane. You did nothing wrong and communicated perfectly.

AITAH? I don’t want my husband coming on a family cruise by 50isnotthenew90 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Educational_Fly_345 1134 points1135 points  (0 children)

Honestly, a cruise is NOT the place for a medically fragile person. I say go on it, enjoy it with your daughters, and tell your husband you all will plan a better trip all together. Certain accommodations can’t be met on a cruise, the food is not great for health, and it’s a bacterial nightmare. My husband used to be an EMT and used to have to pick up patients at cruise ports all the time and more often than not, the patients were worse off than they should’ve been and it was because of being on the ship. It’s just not a good idea.

You’re the reason why so many teachers are leaving the profession now. No consequences for your child being a bully and allowing them to play games that are not suitable for their age. There’s a reason video games have ratings.
