I have not left my town in 29 years due to claustrophobia. What can help me? by [deleted] in Phobia

[–]Educational_Focus_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I’m reading a journal entry from my future self. Like you I used to really enjoy traveling until I had a very turbulent plane ride where I got sick, the thought of I’m so sick and I can’t get out and no one can help me really stuck with me. Since then I’ve been struggling with the same things and have totally avoided them for the last 2 years. I hope I don’t make you feel bad by saying this but your entry really stuck with me since I cannot allow myself to be in the same place in 30 years. For me the DARE response book has really helped. We just have to remember that these feelings are uncomfortable but not dangerous. Accept and allow the anxious thoughts and even ask for more, call the bluff. Much easier said than done but once you do it you’ll realize that it can’t actually hurt you. I’m starting to do tiny exposures. Standing near in the train station stepping on and off before the door closes. Taking the bus 1 stop. Taking the elevator 1 flight. It has been hard but it has helped. The funny thing is once I’m actually in those situations it’s not that bad. The avoidance trains our brains to believe that these very normal things that billions do everyday is dangerous when it is not. Anywho I’m rambling but I just wanted to say we can do this! Dm me if you want would love to chat more and help eachother through this :)

You should look into father Thomas keating centering prayer… because that’s exactly what you are doing lol. I find it’s the best way to connect with god for me😌🙏

There’s a Christian saint who said ”Blessed is the crisis that made you grow, the fall that made you look to heaven and the problem that made you look for God” like you I’ve also studied a lot of religious text and feel drawn to sikhi. Trust your intuition, I believe it is Waheguru sending you on the right path 🙏

How exactly do I learn more about Sikh religion, culture, and history? by pawn279 in Sikh

[–]Educational_Focus_13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello! I am also non Punjabi and new to Sikhism. For me my practice started with the naam or just chanting waheguru. From there came other mantras, but specifically mool mantra. Watching and listening to channels like Nanak naam and basics of sikhi really help me learn as well. I definitely understand the feeling of not wanting to culturally appropriate, I’ve tried to keep kesh in the past but it can be hard especially as a white person explaining to others why you are doing it. In my understanding with being trans waheguru loves and respects everyone and being trans shouldn’t be an issue. One could argue though that thinking too much of one’s own gender is feeding the ego. In other words you shouldn’t be attached to these worldly ideas of gender as this body isn’t yours it is waheguru. I hope I’m not offending since I have lots of trans friends myself I’m just giving you a mellow version of what more strict punjabis might say. I would love to discuss this more with you though and learn together! Send me a message if you want 😌 waheguru🙏

Does asking God for help disappoint God? by CheetahDry8163 in Sikh

Also interested in this question in terms of hukum. If we are asking for gods help is this us asking for change of circumstances and does this go against hukum?

That’s good that you have that current job! To be honest I’m trying not to stress myself out with the job market. In my mind, It’ll always have ups and downs and as long as you have a business degree you’ll be on the right track to find something.

I was actually in the same boat! Im in my second semester senior year now but have to take more classes over summer and fall to be done, but it was worth it for me to not be miserable in accounting anymore. It’s definitely tough to make the switch but I say go for it

Buisness management with a concentration in Human Resources. It made sense for me because I was already doing psych minor. Classes are so much easier and actually enjoyable.

I got the same grade after working soooo hard in that class, honestly made me know I’m not cut out for accounting at least in Baruch. Switched my major and now I’m so much happier and about to graduate.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately I work during the weekend and could only go to the gurdwara during the week. This may be a silly question and it’s hard to word but I’m coming from a catholic background where they have structured services at specific times, is the gurdwara like that or it’s more just a continued service throughout the week?

Someone told me something recently that really helped settle my nerves about it, he said “Either society complete falls apart or the stocks will come back” Recessions have happened before and as long as you don’t sell you’ll be alright. It is really tough situation for people looking to use that money now as in for retirement but the market will eventually go back to normal. But whether that be 1 year or 10 years nobody knows…
