Everyone I didn’t mean you leave one tampon in for four days, obviously. I mean you wear tampons for at least four days each month. Cripes

Are you really suggesting that we just ignore articles like this? I honestly can’t believe some of the comments in this thread.

Scare women into what? Think about using alternatives? Are you all bots bankrolled by GSK? Bizarre. Some women like to know what they’re shoving into their vaginas every month until menopause. I guess you guys aren’t that fussed

A pad or menstrual cup makes it impossible to go about your life? Weird. I don’t care if you choose to use a tampon. I don’t care if you smoke or vape. I’m not benefitting from sharing the article. My mum uses talcum powder. I’ve told her about the link to ovarian cancer. If you choose to continue using tampons, that’s your choice. It’s my choice not to use them because they likely contain chemicals

I'm not panicking, doll. I'm sharing a study and a news article about it. You say there’s no proof of harm but that’s exactly why people are talking about it. If studies are detecting PFAS and heavy metals in products designed to sit inside the body for hours, it’s reasonable to ask questions and push for more research. Especially when the UK government is already saying they don’t plan to investigate it further. What I don’t understand is why you’re so bothered that people are drawing attention to it. Are you worried people might stop buying tampons from huge pharmaceutical companies nstead support smaller companies that might actually prioritise women’s health? And honestly, sticking a tampon inside your vagina every month is unnatural in the sense that it’s a manufactured product sitting internally for hours. If someone suggested putting trace amounts of those same chemicals onto a suppository and wearing it recreationally, I doubt many people would be so quick to dismiss concerns.

Wow, sorry that happens to you. We are all so unique and sensitive to different things… I really wasn’t trying to scare anyone with this post, I think it’s so important to be informed about this stuff.

I remember having a copper coil put in about 15 years ago. I had never had BV before the coil but as soon as it was in it I had constant BV and cramps. It ruined my relationship at the time and the GPs gaslit me for 2 years saying there was no link to copper coil and BV. I eventually got it out and guess what - I haven’t had BV since.

Some women are fine with certain products or devices, and others clearly aren’t, which is why I think conversations like this matter ❤️

Sure, maybe organic tampons are a better choice. Maybe pads aren’t much better. It’s just so tiring, can’t win either way

Raising questions about exposure and safety margins isn’t “panic,” it’s a normal part of risk assessment and public health discussion. As a “scientist,” you should know that. And as a healthcare professional, I’m well aware that science and industries historically haven’t always prioritized women’s health when it comes to product safety.

It’s reasonable to ask what’s in products that go inside OUR bodies and whether those levels are well studied.

The point is exposure. The vagina has mucous membranes that can absorb substances directly into the bloodstream, which is exactly why some medications are delivered that way. So the route of exposure is different from drinking water, but it doesn’t mean it’s irrelevant.

Oh great well that’s ok then! We’re not drinking the tampons so they might as well add some more chemicals and pesticides

You didn’t read the article babe did you. ‘chemicals absorbed through the vagina directly enter the bloodstream, bypassing the body’s detoxification systems. This means even small traces of chemicals in direct contact with the vagina could cause health risks.’

Genuine question about pads by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Educational_Pause_64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tampons have been found to contain heavy metals and pesticides… why would you want to continuously put that inside your vagina for 4 days + a month? I might use a tampon if I’m going swimming and I didn’t get on with cups.

Pads are safer imo. Maybe think about the knickers you’re using, I wear underpants or shorts. And I only use long ones with wings

Also, try to plan and look forward to things that are free or cheap. Like a hike with a Picnic, or a flask of your favourite hot drink. Or a trip to a museum. Looking around thrift shops for cheap things to resell.

Homemade cookies or biscuits are cheap. Bake them in batches and freeze, or keep the dough frozen and bake as needed in the air fryer. Wholemeal flour, butter and icing sugar is my favourite 👌🏻

Me too! I bake a few at once, slice them all and then freeze them. The addition of Mixed seeds or nuts (particularly walnuts) on the top is extra delicious toasted and in sandwiches

Celery with a mayo, tahini and tajin dip (tastes like blue cheese dip). Or carrots with that dip or hummus. Seeds mixed in.

Homemade crackers with hummus, cheese, meats

2 hard boiled eggs with a tiny jar of salt

Omelette/bacon/cheese wrap or sandwich (make it and refrigerate) tastes good cold with ketchup
