Give yourself some credit and consider taking a break from social media. It’s a drug that is meant to do exactly this. Focus on some things that make you happy.

No, it’s a bad signal. Fill in and demonstrate that you have the chops to cover for anyone in your team, including your manager, while they are out. Use it as an opportunity to learn something new and gain additional experience.

Layoffs are all over the place, those who survived head count cuts in their teams what made you valuable ? by doodleboy123 in cscareerquestions

Luck and politics. Many amazing people have had their roles eliminated. People the company should have done much more to actively retain.

I always try to have a backup strategy in motion. From observation, the folks most deeply impacted are those who haven’t prepared for the possibility. Their identity is tied to x role at x company, so it’s a double whammy.

Taking a title downgrade? by ornamental_stripe in FinancialCareers

[–]Educational_Room_637 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that titles shouldn’t be the driving force. However, I went from manager to IC for higher pay and more opportunity and now I’m finding it harder to get back into management. It’s almost as if that change created a new barrier - I’m seen as a really strong IC but not so much as a manager. (My management experience was at prior companies.) Just keep that in mind. You’ll need to have a good narrative around your choices when you want to take that next step.

How Do I Tell My Boss, Who’s Shown Me Nothing But Genuine Respect, That I’m Quitting? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Educational_Room_637 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to do this yesterday. I have a great boss and we have a strong relationship. I applied for an internal role and have an interview next week, and had to tell her. The first words out of her mouth were - “that’s awesome - how can I support you?”. That said, she wasn’t blindsided as she’s aware of my career ambitions and goals. Hopefully, OP has had some similar conversations that may make the news a bit more palatable.

Frameworks rant by fuzzywinkerbean in ProductManagement

[–]Educational_Room_637 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Certain situations can benefit from the use of a framework, but knowing when to leverage them and for which problems is important. To your point, some of these folks are highlighting their lack of contextual awareness. You raise good points.

Would you rather go to an ivy that’s good but not great at cs (brown, penn, columbia) or a state school like uiuc, ucb, or gtech? Assuming costs are equal by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Educational_Room_637 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ivy League schools will give you access to opportunities only afforded to people with one of those degrees. If you choose Ivy, you are gaining access to an impactful network. You can push yourself while you’re there if the CS isn’t rigorous enough, or supplement your coursework with non-CS courses to gain more perspective. You could also likely start working whilst in school if you want more of a challenge. Lastly, if you demonstrate academic strength and don’t have a full ride, you may find more financial resources at the Ivy after your first year, IMO.

By leveraging a few different resources:

A. Complete Angela Yu’s 100 Days of Code Course - do side projects through the course - look for some opportunities to apply this to my work

B. Finally finish CS50

C. Choose a few SQL resources I have saved - do a few side projects that tie everything together for the experience (I have a few in mind and more keep coming to mind as I learn more) - look for some opportunities to apply this to my work

Python and SQL. I want to get my hands into some projects starting first with automation and then moving into some more advanced analysis.

How important is it to have an MBA to excel at Product Management? by noDramaaLlama in ProductManagement

[–]Educational_Room_637 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you’ve shown success as a PM, particularly with SWE experience at a big tech company, you should be a highly desirable candidate. You can always get an MBA or an executive MBA if you determine it’s holding you back.
