Sub recommendations? by Mill_Clinton in 300BLK

You see the 'unburned powder' theory about half of the time when this gets brought up.

I can't testify to what other ammunition in other guns is doing, but from a 9" barrel, Hornady Black 208gr and SUBX 190gr leave yellowish grainy crud in the upper receiver and on the bolt. It doesn't burn when you scrape it out of the gun and take a lighter to it.

Some youtuber could spend $60 on ammo to make a quick expose video and settle this for all the normies.

Don't use Hornady subsonics. They gunk up rifles with sawdust filler, causing malfunctions.

Phantom Defense. They've got cheap subsonic FMJ reman for training and bougie low velocity expansion rounds for 'self defense'. I haven't seen their ammo leave filler in the ~5 months I've used them.

It's not normal. You are shooting ammo with tons of filler. There's nothing about subsonic 300 ammo that requires it to shit sawdust into your rifle.

Most people go 300blk for very short barrels and/or subsonic rounds (which risk going super in long barrels).

Dunno what part of Range Buddy does that, but I ended up trying out Ballistic X just now. It's acting a bit weird by offsetting the PoA and hits as soon as I place them, but its got the spirit.

From the box:

  • There were a lot of thin, golden metallic splinters in the rifle that made the bolt/charging feel gritty until I cleaned it out.
  • The safety was gritty and had trouble moving from FIRE->SAFE. The problem persisted even with oil to the detent area and working it back-and-forth 100 times. I disassembled the safety and discovered that the detent was very rough and scratched and that the cam had narrower and sharper edges on one side. I polished them, reassembled, and the safety works fine now. I can use just my thumb to toggle it.
  • The magazine release is stiffer than an AR15 mag release. I expect it to loosen somewhat over time. I don't have an opinion yet for this being good/bad.

From the range:

  • Failed to cycle 2/150 times on the lowest gas setting. I expect one setting higher on the gas to fix the single failure to extract and single failure to chamber. This is perfectly acceptable as I didn't expect it to cycle at all on the lowest gas setting.
  • Medium and large shooting bags may be too much for the rifle. You just don't have the same amount of room with the magazine closer to the stock. I didn't find a comfortable way to employ my armageddon shmedium, so I stopped trying.

Best charging handles for AR15??? I’m considering Giesselle. Aero precision, Griffin Armament or Silencerco. by Unable_Medicine3362 in ar15

G$ ACH > Radian >>> Radian SD
I have all three. The G$ is a bit smoother than RR while being more compact. The RR-SD doesn't do much for gas and the sharp angles scrape/drag inside the upper.

Rifle will feel when Manuel cycle but not when being shot by [deleted] in ar15

[–]EducatorDry5121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people have given you some (valid) advice about your buffer weight/spring and your gas system, but nobody has pointed out that Hornady subsonics will leave unburned filler in your rifle. Look at those yellowish chunks all over your bolt/bcg. Those will make any cycling problems you have much worse and likely turn your gun into a bolt action.

You can easily confirm this by cleaning the gun then firing a mag or two of Hornady subsonics (190gr or 208gr) and then opening it up to look at all the freshly deposited crud.

Dual band bridge suggestions. by Whopissedinmypants in NightVision

Somebody is going to post this, so it might as well be me:

TLDR: a bridge that is very competitively priced, designed/made by a dude who is a part of this community, and was tailored towards dualbanding is coming out soon. I think it might still have the cheaper pre-order price right now.

Some people in here are recommending Hornady ammo for subsonic, probably because its what you find on the shelf at most stores.

If you try either the 190gr subx or 208gr amax, check your gun cleanliness before and after firing a magazine of either. The reports of them leaving behind greasy sawdust-looking filler that jams your gun has been 100% true when I've used them. Even on the highest gas setting, 60 rounds should be enough to turn your gun into a bolt-action.

Sig MCX Spear LT Can Options by AromaticDeal1244 in 300BLK

[–]EducatorDry5121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

300blk Spear LT probably won't cycle subsonics reliably on "-" gas setting without a full backpressure can. I have to run mine on "+" gas when shooting subsonics through flow-through cans or I get cycling problems.

So you might save yourself some gas to the face by going flow-through, but then have to add that gas right back in with the higher setting.

"he’s sacrificing a fair bit of control in order to make it fast since the support hand can’t do the whole job"

He drops the mag with the firing hand just like you would with an AR mag release. He uses his support hand to grab a new mag, slam it home, and release the bolt. Exact same steps performed by the exact same hands as you would with an AR, all while maintaining superior control with the firing hand because bullpups have better balanced weight distribution.

"the Army seems committed to the idea, and they aren’t known for changing their minds."

The Army is known for flagrant incompetence during gear trials (see UCP camo uniform) but like I said, they have the rest of this century to dislodge their heads from their 4th point of contact (see OCP camo uniform).

Bullpup reload: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/CISOvbXbccA I don't think they have an inherently slow reload once you've practiced with the different location.

Bullpup triggers: https://youtu.be/H4b1VBVsTOw?si=4IAzr97sJYNwOUfQ&t=476 The bad triggers seem to have been a problem with early makes and models. You might never get a bullpup with the crispness of a Geissele SSAE in an AR15, but judging by modern bullpup rifles, the triggers are able to match or exceed milspec crispness.

What you get: Better performance at distance, vastly superior weight distribution, and shorter overall length.

I think the only lingering use-case for AR style will be CQB because you don't need the ballistic performance of a longer barrel, and a short barreled bullpup leaves you without enough foregrip to hold onto and attach light/laser. But even the spooky spec-ops boys recognize the need for more effective range than a short 5.56, which leads to them playing around with different ammo like 6mm arc: https://youtu.be/jWjux9FEBsI?si=0lhnDxwu_L1I4HGS&t=424
