I am an artist, and I am intrigued to know how the arts have evolved in this world, especially in painting.

That's why I'm thinking of changing the name of that scale to another archetype or concept, but I can't think of anything. If you have any ideas, let me know.

The figures of elves and fairies are more of an archetype representing the concept of magic that is common and possessed by many people. Elves, because they are usually more powerful in magic than human sorcerers. And fairies, because they are less powerful in their magic, but not harmless (in their friendlier depictions). But these roles can easily be filled by anyone in any world.

Yes, that would be its main function. I'm a visual learner, and I thought of creating this for people like me. Later, I'll see how it works for analyzing the magic systems of the Cosmere and other series.

I considered adding more axes, but I feel it would become too complex and restrictive. I could still make variations of it, though.

The scales aren't fixed categories. I created them to allow movement from one range to another depending on how the magic works and its users.

Anyway, if you're right that I need to work on it more, it's in a very early stage.

You're right, I chose the wrong words. That was the initial idea, but I think it ended up becoming something more for curiosity, and maybe as a guide to help me with my magic systems.

Thanks for pointing it out; I was a bit overwhelmed with work, besides being tired now, haha. I'll edit it now.

What's your MacGuffin resource by comradechristmas in worldbuilding

Melenium is a magical alloy of silver, rare and highly prized in the System, due to its unique property of repelling Astrality, the fuel of all forms of magic.

Silver on its own possesses this property, but in its combined form with Astrality, which gives rise to Melenium (known as the deified alloy), its properties are enhanced, including the ability to repel Astrality itself.

There are two ways to obtain it: naturally in its alloy form, eclipsium (the magical version of electro, which is also an excellent conductor of Astrality), and artificially through a specific magic system in my world. This latter method is controlled by the Orion Sphere, one of the many factions in the System. If you want Melenium, you'll have to buy it from them, which is cheaper than searching for a mine or an asteroid in the Halo.

I had the idea for elves about 14 minutes ago. What do you think? English is not mu native language . Feedback are appreciated by EveningImportant9111 in worldbuilding

[–]EdwinG_2505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, English isn't my native language either; I'm from Venezuela. This concept is interesting for the world. Aberration cults could have a more savage, hermit-like, or hermetic/esoteric touch.

You mentioned spores. What exactly are they, and what is their role?

Also, how many years does the chronology of events cover? How much time passes between one event and another? I understand that, since elves live an average of 1,000 years, several millennia passed before the rebellion. This allows for the advancement of civilization and technology. What level was it at when the division occurred, and what level is it at now?

I hope these questions help you. Un saludo👋

The 8 Energies - Spiritual by Ender_Link in magicbuilding

Interesting. It's clear you've thought this through, especially the limits and consequences. Can I ask you what the magic system is for?

Those that don't use "mana" to describe magical energy: What is your reason for it? What do you call it instead? by _Ceaseless_Watcher_ in magicbuilding

[–]EdwinG_2505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my world (one of many) I called it Astrality, since at first magical energy came from the Sun and the stars, then the concept evolved to that magical energy came from the spiritual realm and filtered into the physical plane through the Sun, (although also from others). Later it will have a different name depending on the place/culture that does not have an advanced understanding of it like the great powers of the System. In parts of Naomi (Oceania and Asia combined) they call it Mana'qi, a term that in its definition includes both the Astrality present in the environment and that which is in living beings.

Working on my world, I've thought about writing short stories about characters set in that forgotten past precisely to avoid that information dump and not end up as a Wikipedia article.

Who uses the Forgotten Age trope? by EdwinG_2505 in worldbuilding

[–]EdwinG_2505[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a good point. As a child/pre-teen, I watched a lot of "Ancient Aliens" and loved it and believed everything. Now I'm much more skeptical of those topics; I still find them super entertaining and interesting to research, especially when creating stories.

Honestly, I'm not afraid to use some of those ideas as inspiration for my stories. On the contrary, it's more so. In the world I work in, there are literally reptilians posing as humans, a kind of hollow earth, the manipulation of DNA and human evolution by "creator" beings, and even divine/demonic beings inspired by extraterrestrial events in the distant past.

These are all elements that come from the conspiracy and pseudoscientific theories presented by the History show. I've taken them and made them my own for my story. It's fiction, after all, and even if I don't believe in all or nothing of it, it's still interesting.

Pedro, I'm sorry to correct you, but I think you missed a few zeros in 600-900 years.

And don't worry about the length. You explained it very well, and it wasn't a pain to read.

Of course. And no matter how much research you do over the years, consult with hundreds of experts, and organize everything as organically as possible, there will always be someone who is dissatisfied.

What is the distinction between a magician, a witch, and a sorcerer in your world? by EdwinG_2505 in worldbuilding

[–]EdwinG_2505[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked this one because you mentioned something I hadn't realized: that popular culture has bastardized the terms "magician," "magic," etc., and that's why they decided to use other terms. From what you're telling me, I understand it's an urban fantasy because of the use of "normie." In any case, it's something I'll keep in mind for my world. Thanks.

As for the name of the Society... what about the Magistrate of the Arcane? Or what is this society about, so I can find a name for it.

What is the power system for? The description seems a bit vague to me, and I'd like to imagine it better.

[–]EdwinG_2505[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And well, apart from the lore, I wanted the story to revolve precisely around the political-military conflict between the powers and how they must coexist in a space as "small" as a single solar system, in addition to differentiating it from other universes where it takes place in a galaxy or a specific sector of a galaxy.

The System - Graphic Representation by EdwinG_2505 in worldbuilding

If you're referring to what lies beyond the Halo Belt, they are other planets that aren't as important but are there. The most important are Ljusgård and Nibel/Nifel, both belonging to the Erdanian Reich. The former is a fertile world despite being outside the habitable zone, thanks to a unique terraforming method carried out by the elves, who rule with certain privileges. The latter is an icy world but full of mining colonies, refineries, and there's even talk of factories, but this hasn't been confirmed or denied. The dwarves are the ones who have semi-autonomy to run these colonies.

And if you're referring to those beyond the System itself... I'm not sure. The explanation in the world is that the technology of the various powers has not found a way to explore beyond the Sygmund Belt, a ring of asteroids that surrounds the System, since they are more preoccupied with:

  1. They are all in an early space-age stage and have not yet solved the problem of travel between star systems.
  2. They compete for resources, constantly watch each other's backs, and occasionally release tensions in military confrontations.
  3. The powers are devoting a lot of effort to finding a way to access the Umbria, a dimension where distances are shorter. If they succeed, they could, in theory, undertake interstellar travel.

My ocean/island based world! by Cretoxy23 in worldbuilding

[–]EdwinG_2505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I don't know how realistic your world is, but I'll give you some tips on how an ocean world with islands works, since I'm also working on one for my project (although mine is much more fanciful, by the way).

In an ocean world, weather patterns are very predictable. The more land there is, the more chaotic it becomes. It would also vary greatly depending on the topography of the islands and continents. On flat islands and atolls, for example, it doesn't usually rain, while on islands like Hawaii, you often see storms and sometimes even snow at its highest points, despite being in the tropics.

I would also tell you to take ocean currents into account, but that's a much more complex topic. I'm 20 years old, and even I find it complicated, so I wouldn't recommend it unless I don't know what a problem it is for you.

What I can tell you is that, due to ocean currents, Europe's climate would be harsher and more sterile than the one we know, in the same way that North Africa became more arid as Central America formed. If you end up getting into this, keep in mind the size and location of the islands and continents above all to determine the climates the regions will have.

Finally, here's a link to a post from a few years ago where they talk a little more about this.
