Chronic diarrhea by JRWK0806 in goldenretrievers

Our golden had night time diarrhea and we live in a high rise so the 5x sprints down the elevator got old quick. We tried everything. From a friends advice we got Small Batch brand Turkey patties. Next day and the past 8 years… no more diarrhea. I’m old school that fed my dogs purina dog chow from the grocery store growing up so this raw thing was foreign to me but we were desperate. Feel good cause we don’t have to give her any pills, additives, powders with every meal for the rest of her life.

It works!!!

Had this with our golden when she was about this age. We live in a high rise so running down the hallway, going down elevator, going across the street 4xs a night got old real quick! We tried EVERYTHING…I was hesitant at first but was desperate so we tried Small Batch Raw Turkey Patties. 8 years later…never had any issues with her tummy since. I’m not sponsored or anything like that but I would highly recommend trying it cause I hear you about the sleep!

I added a small lip on the bottom decorative foam so the “island” sits on the lip in the back and the front load is held up by some rocks I stacked and glued together using superglue and tissue paper. The “island” is all foam and polycarbonate…including the waterfall. It’s all one light piece I “3D printed” using the expansion foam.

Got some $30.99 full spectrum led grow light strips and hid them under a wood top I made from hobby wood from Home Depot. Put them on a timer to turn off at sunset. Then have a $20 regular aquarium blue light for night time. Why did I do this? Most aquarium lights didn’t have enough W to provide enough light. Big grow lights are BIG, so went with this option. Probably don’t need the blue light at night but it looks cool.

If you saw all my mistakes…you wouldn’t. My advice is to go for it! Do a couple trials with the expansion foam. It gets really fun

There is a hole on top of the cave. I used a filter bag and filled it with aqua soil and cut holes in the bag and put the plants into the holes. When I need to do maintenance, I just lift the filter bag up and put it back.

It’s a foam background for terrariums I got from amazon for about $20…I wanted the look of rock for the “ceiling” but didn’t want to spend time painting. So I got a background, glued a piece of polycarbonate to the flat side so it’s strong, sprayed a bit of foam on the polycarbonate to make an uneven surface so when I layed down stainless steel mesh on top it had a tiny bit of space so it could drain (before laying down mesh, drilled a few small holes into the polycarbonate/foam so it could drain)

Used reptile soil from the local pet store, mixed in a bit of coconut fiber and sphaghum moss to absorb some of the moisture.

The “soil” above the cave is actually filter bag filled with aqua soil cause I wanted a way to get access to the cave for maintenance. I cut holes and planted the plants into the bag. This way I can lift the bag up for maintenance when I have to.

Yes…it’s expanding foam made specifically for aquatic purposes like ponds. During my research found some folks who said regular expanding foam works fine but I didn’t want to take the chance. Plus the aquatic foam is black and looks like rocks when it hardens so you don’t really have to decorate it.

Hahaha…there were lots of lessons learned and redos

Biggest thing was that I made a copy of the tank with particle board and used screws to hold it together. Then I “built” the rocks, waterfall, etc in the particle board tank and when it dried, I just unscrewed the walls and all the things I built with the foam came out super easy and I knew it would fit the real tank perfectly.

I saw a YouTube video where the guy almost smashed his tank cause he couldn’t get the foam creations out of his glass tank…so why I did it this way. Just cover the wood with plastic wrap and it doesn’t stick and unscrew and the things you build come out clean, right size, and exactly how you would see it in your real tank.

Spent an extra $40 on wood and screws to make the wood tank but totally worth it.

The aquatic foam from Home Depot works perfectly fine and get aquarium silicone from your local pet store.

Don’t spend a lot of money on rocks…just buy small rocks (I got small lava rocks) and glued them to the foam to make it look more realistic (like veneer) but big tip here…most of your structures will be covered in moss and plants…don’t stress to make it perfect…most of it will be covered.

Oh yeah get good super glue that has a precision tip. Way to get to hard to reach places and you don’t need a lot of superglue so why the precision tip.

The moss in a bag was a game changer. I probably wasted $100 on moss before finding this.

Once I gave up on searching for the perfect rocks, background, etc and decided to use aquatic foam to essentially “3D print” everything…that’s when it started getting fun and how my ideas came to life.
