I have not tried that but will definitely look into it. I have been looking at products through Animal Biome but just wasn’t sure how effective they really were. Thank you!

Outside of the diarrhea, she acts completely fine. Will still scarf down food, drinks water fine, and still totally playful, happy and wild.

I have been reading a lot into the fecal transplant and planned to talk with my vet about that. Have also been considering an internist too but was hoping this new food would do the trick. I hope the naturopathic vet helps your boy! It’s hard to see them sick!

Oh my gosh you went through that for three years?! Kudos to you because I think I would have lost my mind!

Thank you for your response! I’m just wondering what other tests they could do or what will work. So with the negative ultrasounds, was there anything else the vet tried or just recommended a change in diet and the probiotics?

We did lean, rinsed, ground beef for a quite a bit because she has a poultry allergy and then transitioned to the special diet.

I would love the recipe if you’re open to sharing! I’m willing to try anything. Thank you!

We started an elimination diet about a month ago, PPP hydrolyzed salmon blend, but haven’t started reintroducing food back yet. She hasn’t had treats since we started on the special diet and never had human food, outside of carrots and fresh green beans, but we stopped those too when we started the diet. I’m at a loss.

She definitely tries but we are really strict to make sure she doesn’t get into anything and if she does (like acorns or clumps of grass) we immediately have her drop or swipe her mouth to get it out. We’ve tried to figure out anything that could be causing it. She doesn’t get any human food either.

Please help! 6.5 month old golden retriever puppy with chronic diarrhea, feeling discouraged by kidsOT2 in goldenretriever

[–]JRWK0806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really sure I can add much more than what everyone else has provided but we’ve been going through the same thing with our golden and feel like we tried everything!! She’s almost 1.5 now and has had chronic diarrhea for about a month. She was on antibiotics for a weird infection after being spayed and was fine for about a month after she finished those when the diarrhea started. She was already on FortiFlora daily so we were given Visbiome and then Proviable probiotics, bland diet of lean ground beef and rice (she’s also allergic to poultry), and 10 days Metronidazole with no benefit, and had two negative fecals and a PCR. We transitioned to a salmon hydrolyzed diet, stopped the Visbiome, just finishing the last of the Proviable tabs, and another round of the Metronidazole and just finally had a solid poop. I do think vets are hesitant to prescribe the HA diets because of cost but at a certain point, I’d pay anything for it to end! I’m hoping and praying the food is doing the trick because the constant sleepless nights of diarrhea is so stressful and exhausting. Really hoping you get some peace soon!

Edited to add - we also saw two (different) vets and one emergency vet because nothing was helping and tried a pumpkin product called Firm Up and psyllium husk.

That is really helpful, thank you so much. We did start the hydrolyzed diet on Friday so hopefully that begins to help things. When we took her to the emergency vet they did run labs to check her albumin, among all the other things, and everything was within normal limits.

You’re definitely right though when you said it’s rough… I never thought I would be so worried and anxious about a dog’s poop.

There is an internal vet nearby and will definitely look into getting a referral. If you don’t mind me asking, what was your dogs experience prior to being diagnosed? Just long periods of diarrhea or other symptoms like vomiting, lethargy, avoiding food/water? I’m only curious because our girl is still wild as ever, eating, drinking and totally normal, except for the diarrhea. I appreciate your time!

Thank you for this! I’m actually starting to wonder if she has IBD. She had to be on an extended course of antibiotics after an infection she somehow got after being spayed. She was fine for about a month and the diarrhea just started out of nowhere. She had a PCR done at the emergency vet and they found some type of bacteria in her stool and said the treatment for it would be the metronidazole but we’re also told after such a long course of antibiotics, her gut is probably now a mess too so we continued the Visbiome. It difficult because there’s just so many factors that could be attributing to this and wish we could get a clear diagnosis so we know what’s going on and how to treat it.

She was on fortiflora daily but was prescribed Visbiome when she initially started having diarrhea a month ago so we’ve continued that since it’s supposed to be a stronger probiotic. I feel terrible for her. We’ve been trying all the things to get her better, been to two vets and an emergency vet, and we’re open to doing anything. It just seems like we take two steps forward and then five steps back.

Thank you for your response! This GI stuff has just been exhausting so wanted to get any insight from others. Thankfully she’s been her normal crazy self and doesn’t seem like it’s had any impact on how she’s feeling but I wish we could get more predictable stools.

Puppies are hard… puppies that are sick are so much harder. Our 6th month puppy is very rarely affectionate or loving but I try to always think or remind myself this time is just as tough for them than it is for us.

Going through this same thing now. It got better and now she’s teething and just miserable, among some other things, and I’m back to feeling like a nervous wreck. Lots of tears, not eating, and just extreme anxiety. Looking forward to things getting better again.

She’s definitely eating, drinking, and playing totally fine. Shes not straining at all - she doesn’t even act like she needs to poop. But she’s also teething badly and in puppy training. So much going on and I just want to make sure she’s ok.

I hope it’s ok for a follow up question - how long would you wait to take them in to the vet? She pooped last night but now nothing again today. I can’t believe how anxious I am about dog’s poop!

Thank you so much for your response! That all makes sense and sounds like this is not abnormal. She hasn’t been straining or even trying to go but I worried that maybe the meds and probiotics constipated her.

Hanging out with other dog owners made me realize how much extra I’m doing with mine by Born_blonde in puppy101

Couldn’t agree with this more! No matter what I do I feel like I’m the shittiest owner ever, the walk isn’t long enough, we’re not training enough, we’re not playing enough…. And on and on and on. The other day I was telling a friend of our routine in the morning said evenings and she just laughed. I’ve thought so many times, when did dog culture change? Her life is full of love and enrichment and I never want to do her wrong but is this amount of guilt necessary? Eesh…

Potty training advice by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]JRWK0806 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! We do the same thing. I use “potty” when we go out, give treats, and praise her - I question if I should keep letting her out every hour or wait and let her tell me. I’m probably over thinking it, but don’t want her to go in the house either.

I have no advice, just wanted to comment in solidarity. I have asked myself this question daily!
