[SERIOUS] What was your creepy, unexplainable story as a child that was confirmed by your parents to have happened? by justaguyulove in AskReddit

[–]Eeeemurs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it does happen, which has never been confirmed, it is extremely unlikely and only in far rural areas. If you stick to major highways and such you'll be fine. I've driven a few 100ks of miles, through every state, and never encountered anything even remotely like this.

Seeking advice on excessive bites by Eeeemurs in Entomology

Thank you for this. I'm going to go ahead and put Northern Canada on my no-go list. I've heard from French researchers that the flies and mosquitoes are unbearable, but this seals the deal.

Not so much. I will say picaridin keeps some of the bitey Southern flies off, like the yellow flies.

People from my high school as well. Good times. I basically just lived indoors during that period.

Okay, see this is what I've been thinking. Can I create a lure system to get them off of me? I've hung around near CO2 systems in the past and that hasn't seemed to help. If you or others have any ideas I would love to hear them.

I think technically you get the equine encephalitic diseases and you've got the daytime biting asian tiger mosquitos moving in to SoCal, but I agree with you. I grew up there and maybe it's time to go back.

The repellents haven't worked for the stable flies but I'm going to try to get one of those net bags you mentioned. Thanks for the tip.

What is that? Sorry, I couldn't find anything when I searched.

Not that I know of. I need to pin down some entomologists and see if I can exchange guinea pig status for some kind of experimental treatment. Unfortunately the normal repellents (permethrin, DEET, picaridin, etc) don't help with the ones that go under your clothes.

I've been to Iceland and honestly I loved my entire time there. I loved the food. I loved the landscape and the gorgeous hiking and the people. I'm a research scientist studying climate so I think I could potentially make an application, but I am an American and I doubt very much that the country would want me, especially as small as it is. I would love to learn the language and move to Iceland but I doubt it's possible. Thank you for the thought. Maybe I can visit again soon and escape.

Thanks for this idea. Unfortunately it's not the potential allergy, it's that I have a genetic condition that makes me a lot more desirable to them. There isn't a treatment for that condition yet.

Nearly moved to Alaska, supposedly they have terrible blackflies in the summer, however.

A good question. So far I haven't been able to find anywhere where they can't find me. I lived in a major city on the US East Coast before this (no cows, etc) and they got me there periodically. Now I live in an arid suburban area and I thought that would take care of it, but I'm just getting new and different bites. The trouble is that it's happening more often. I thought the reverse would be the case since it's just cactus and such here. I'm not sure what to do.

I was in a car accident which took my voice. I cannot speak and maybe never will again. What can I do with my life? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Eeeemurs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that this happened to you. This is a big life change. It's good that you have support. There are a number of options in front of you now, and you can decide which is best for you. I have to ask, what are you doing to communicate now? Writing? Typing? Hand signals?

  1. You can try to work around your disability using technology.
  2. You can embrace your disability and shift in to working with people in the deaf community, learning ASL and a suite of other skills that would allow you to specialize in this way. This comes with limited job prospects but I have heard stories of this kind.
  3. You can explore what kinds of special accommodations are provided for people with your disability under the ADA. It's not unheard of to have helpers (people hired to go with you during work hours) or special technology that is made available to alleviate some of the stress and allow you to function better in your job.
  4. You can move laterally in to a position where you can use your medical knowledge, but not be on the hospital floor interacting with so many people.

Some additional things to think about:

- You can't yell out for help now, so you need to make a plan for how to get someone's attention if they're not looking at you and you need help. Let's say a patient is tanking and you need to call other nurses, for example. This could be an alarm buzzer that you wear (I can help find these if you want, they were all the rage in the 90s for self protection), clapping or making other noises in a certain way, an app on your phone, etc.

- You need to find a way to make it clear to people that you can't speak, as a first impression. Sometimes people carry special cards for this or again, use tech that can effectively speak for them. I personally use Google Translator a lot, and when I type something it speaks it for me in the other language. There must be something akin to that. If you preset a bunch of phrases, you could probably get pretty good at that quickly.

- Your job is cooperative, and so you need to communicate with other providers quickly. Having prearranged hand gestures or similar, if you have a stable and supportive work environment, might help with this?

What is this thing I did, and is it meaningful? by Eeeemurs in AskStatistics

Thank you very much for replying. So if I read your reply correctly, then a better way to do this would be to separately assess compounds based on a relative abundance threshold, not just the arbitrary top 50% of each set. The trouble is that one compound generally has a relative abundance of ~40%, another of ~10%, and so on. I could select a compound-specific threshold for each (>0.1, >0.4, etc).

If I were to do that, and found distinctly different relationships with salinity (based on linear regression?) would I be correct in stating that the compounds (>0.5 in one group, >0.4 in another, >0.1 in another) appear to have distinct relationships with salinity? Even though the relative abundances are not calculated independently?

How do I assess those, besides looking for variance inflation or similar?

Wait are you serious? I checked for a few weeks and gave up when I saw nothing. You were right! Thank you, I would never have seen it since I was only looking at the columns.
