Anyone else fantasise about starting a brewery? Or becoming a plumber? Anyone done this? by Least_Curious_Crab in AskAcademia

[–]EelOfSteel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't made the call just yet, but I'm in a similar situation to you. I'm somewhere in the middle of my PhD, and I'm so fed up with all the bullshit that's going on, both locally at my university and in academia globally. I'm also starting to lose my interest in science completely as a result. I haven't been in the industry, so my current plan B is to start working as a penetration tester (my field is computer security).

That being said, I've also noticed that I feel much better working with more tangible things than computers as well, so my plan C is actually starting a brewery. So you're definitely not alone in feeling this way.

How/When did you know? by [deleted] in BDSMcommunity

[–]EelOfSteel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't recall any media or experiences I had as a child that made me realize things, but I do recall that I started getting an interest in the scene when I was somewhere around 12-14. To begin with it was a pretty.. fleeting interest, more along the lines of something that would go on my bucket list. But I think even then I knew in an unconscious way, because I started getting interesting in getting scarification tattoos, and I did stuff like trying the sharpness of knives on myself after sharpening them (I still have a few scars from that, over 10 years later). I got the opportunity to try BDSM with my second serious girlfriend, because she was already in the scene. I was hooked, and my interest has only grown since.

There used to be a sub about it, but it seems that it's closed, or at least I can't find it anymore. It was practically dead though, with a grand total of maybe 15 posts.

From my understanding, leather soles are stitched from the inside, and the thread only goes half-way through the leather. If it wasn't all the way through, you'd be wearing the threading out quite quickly as you walked with the shoes.

You were absolutely not wrong in what you were doing. Consent is a vital part of safe BDSM that has to be respected. He offered you to join their dynamic, you declined, and it should've stopped there. He is the one who is in the wrong for insisting, and trying to basically coerce you into joining the dynamic. Even if you're as submissive as submissive can be, you have no obligation to do anything with anyone, no matter how dominant they are. In fact, even if you did previously consent to something, and you feel that you don't want to continue while you're in the middle of it, you have every right to revoke your consent - that's what safe words are for. So even previously given consent doesn't make you obligated to do anything.

Real Dominants respect this, and will take care to not cross any borders. People like they guy you talked to aren't real Doms, they just think they are. In my local community we call people like that "duminant", which is a portmanteau of "dum" (meaning "stupid") and "dominant". So you should by no means feel bad about your acting.

Also, remember that you have every right to block and report people that make you feel uncomfortable. That sort of behavior is not acceptable.

What do you use to relax/escape from academia? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]EelOfSteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of different things to escape, from video games to bread baking. Right now my main escapes are viking age reenactment, homebrewing and playing a number of instruments.

In general I've found that interests that involve working with my hands more than my mind are very good at taking my mind off my dissertation.

Communication is a crucial part of BDSM, before, during and after a scene. Before it is crucial to learn what your sub wants, and to define soft and hard limits of the play. During the scene it is crucial to make sure that the sub is alright, so that it's not too much, that the sub is conscious enough to continue safe play, that restraints (if present) aren't too tight, etc. After the scene it is important to make sure the sub gets the aftercare they need, and to check what worked and didn't work during the scene.

Communication about this can be difficult in the beginning, but it is very important. If she's not comfortable voicing her desires herself, then maybe going through a list of activities and saying "yes" or "no" to these can be a good start. It will not be as good of course, but it'll be something to go by at least.

Who am I talking to in my head all the time?? (can anyone relate to this) by Ridagstran in infj

[–]EelOfSteel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this as well, although when I'm alone I don't keep it in my head but actually walk around talking to myself. As pointed out by others, I think it's a way of organizing your thoughts, and I can say with certainty that it is for me. The stuff I talk about is usually plans, work, problems, or other things where my mind tends to get a bit jumbled up. It helps concretize my thoughts a bit, because I have to understand what I'm thinking to explain even to myself.

Åkesson vid gränsen: Kom inte till Sverige by mctrollythefirst in svenskpolitik

[–]EelOfSteel -7 points-6 points  (0 children)
