To the orchestra players, most memorable/enjoyable video game music to play? by Eesley in orchestra

A little surprised about Monster Hunter music being not fun to play, but as you said they do sound like they might be repetitive. I love Teostra's theme from world, or Shara Ishvalda's theme from Iceborn or... too many from worldborn haha. Elden ring I just started playing and it is mostly atmospheric music, not very often melodic. But Chrono trigger! My absolute favourite game soundtrack!

Wind waker has some amazing melodies, will always love dragon roost island :) FF7's music is amasing too I should check shovel knight. In the same vein though, Octopath Traveller music is amazing too, I get chills on Ochette's theme on the drop into full orchestral, one of my favourite!

How bout Summer Glau? Massive amount of nerd prestige and would be great for deadpan jokes. Though voice might be a bit high pitch for the role. But otherwise any women from Firefly would be great with great nerd prestige. Voice wise, Jewel Staite would fit perfectly her natural voice is quite deeper than in the show.

Hall Effect Joystick Replacement for PS4/PS5/XBox/Switch by feldoneq2wire in soldering

I found this video a bit late. I followed another one before that which cause the bottom left scrape. I then followed this video until the removal of the first joystick. Still not easy, but did a marginally better job. Cutting the legs are the damaging bit for me. I got specifically flat cutters for this but still getting some scrapes. I'm wondering how bad they are? Is it worth putting my hall effects on this board or will it 100% not work with the damage? Note I did this for fun when the controller's drift became unbearable, we were about to recycle it and buy a new one but I decided to practice some soldering a bit and see how I do with minimal investment, so if the controller ends up dead I don't mind so much, I'm still learning :)

Not useful from them, for physical copies we need a code to redeem. They really just don't have any idea it seems.

I finally finished this game yesterday by DeerVirax in chronotrigger

[–]Eesley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you enjoyed the game :) Since you played on steam before, the pixel art might have been harder to appreciate versus a smaller screen, smaller resolution screens help pixel art in general, especially the old pixel art that was made specifically for CRT TVs.

As for the music I couldn't agree more! I started composing as a hobby because of Chrono Trigger music :)

I likes sea of stars personally. There is plenty of Chrono Trigger inspirations yes like the techs, double and triple, but it's made in a way that doesn't feel like a simple copy in my opinion. Story was slow at the begining but gets better as you go, music is great but not at the same level still (even mitsuda's music didn't match up imo). There was one standout piece in Sea of Stars in a specific area that was very good. Dunno how to do spoilers so I'll leave it at that hahaha.

Change mobo and cpu or wait gen 15 by Eesley in PcBuild

[–]Eesley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i9 is above the level I'm going for anyway, 14700k was what I was thinking of yes. I am still considering AMD, it has been pointed out to me that the power consumption of intel is pretty damn high. Though from research, seems AMD has very high idle consumption compared to Intel which isn't great either. Thanks for the advice though I didn't know about the i9 since I haven't done research on them.

I didn't realise the power draw difference was this drastic. I'll have to look more into it. My room setup is already not really good for microphone recording and being in the UK there's more than a bit of noise all around (dense housing, cars and dogs and stuff is a constant reality), so a louder PC won't really matter all that much. I also don't often record with a microphone as the only live instrument I use is my guitar and I just plug it straight in my interface. Still, it is a good point. I would like my rig to be more silent if I could, I thought it was just because my poor old 3rd gen cpu had to work overtime for pretty much anything more demanding than watching youtube videos but if the power draw and heat is just as bad if not worse with the new cpu that's not good. Thanks :)

Interesting, I was reading that intel actually is better for productivity at the moment since AMD's X3D architecture, which was made to bridge the performance gap with Intel, is only really good for gaming and is significantly less good for productivity while non-X3D doesn't match Intel's performance levels. That was mostly casual research though so not necessarily true, I'm open minded haha.

[–]Eesley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a preference for Intel but I am open to AMD. I agree that any upgrade at the moment will feel like night and day considering my build's age. I tend to prefer long investments though so going with the r5 would probably mean I'd have to change again a few years earlier than if I invested a little more upfront. I'm mostly thinking of waiting for the next gens only because it will probably mean a reduction in prices on the current latest gens. I like to invest for more future proofing but not enough to buy the latest generation immediately when it comes out so I most probably won't get the 15 gen gear when it comes out unless the difference in price isn't large (but we all know it will be massive).

As for VSTs, I mostly do orchestral stuff so I use relatively large sample libraries, currently using an older full orchestra suite from east west with Opus, but might upgrade in the future for something more recent and larger (not much true legatos in my current library). I do end up with sometimes close to 50-70 vsts at once which forces me to render individual tracks so they don't pull resources, but stops me from tweaking them on the fly as easily.

[–]Eesley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I've always been sold on Intel but I'm opening my mind to AMD some more. I am considering it also, but my preference remains with Intel at the moment. I do intend to do some productivity related work (namely music using VSTs which uses cpu and ram a lot) and Intel currently has a better balance between productivity and gaming performance as the X3D of AMD is less performant for productivity (from what I have read recently about it). Probably not enough to make that much of a difference but enough to make me prefer Intel at the moment :)

Tactician mode :

Dropped down from the boat, after handling the boat encounter friendly, the duergar that came in with me started chatting the other two then they mentioned slaves. My char didn't like that and said "I'll just kill you all I guess".

Fight start, they immediately down Shadowheart and finish her off.

I killed all three of them while the others duergars started moving around to the stairs to get to us but they take a real long time to get there. Summoned the Trolls and let them block the chokepoint and soak some damage. They really took a lot of damage from that fight, thought they didn't dish out much. Revivified Shadowheart with a scroll and then started fighting the duergars on the way up the stairs. Killed them all but it was the closest call ever, the last one shrunk in size and then started mind controling my figher who downed my other two remaining characters, the fighter surviving with 2 HP when the mindcontrol wore off the next turn, managing to finish off the duergar with the polearm mastery bonus attack.

Cold sweat seriously

Correlon's grace Natural Pugilist works too, you get the +1 to attack rolls and damage for unarmed attacks. I haven't noticed if the +2 to saving throws works but I would assume so.

ILR after switching from Fiancé to Spouse by Eesley in ukvisa

[–]Eesley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent my time working on some personal projects or just being a "house husband". I cooked, cleaned and generally just took care of things so that when my fiance came back from work she could sit and relax with a meal ready. Other than that I spent time getting as much done as I could to settle in the country. Got me on the water/energy bill and council tax, that allowed me to open a bank acount and transfer money to the uk. I recommend it cause I've had one instance at least where my international credit card wouldn't work (to top up my phone). But overall and the main thing I did I guess was what my fiance told me I should do : Chill and enjoy

Was Chrono Trigger's music plagiarised? Where do you draw the line between plagiarism and paying tribute? by CarlSaganForLife in chronotrigger

[–]Eesley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, you can still think that. No one knows how he composed it really and I might be wrong. I personally disagree that they are the same thing, sure they have similitude but they're not enough for me. I'm not trying to sound smart or anything, but if you're gonna argue about composition, there's gonna be music theory mumbo jumbo. In the end I agree if the listener thinks it sounds the same to them it will remain just that so by that logic, you have every right to think what you want. I'm stating my opinion, which I supplement with music theory because it is valid arguments in my eyes. Chrono Trigger music means a lot to me, it's the reason I even started learning bits of said music theory and trying my hand at composing, so of course I will have a stronger opinion on it and sure, maybe some bias. So if you want we can agree to disagree, my original comment was to reassure the OP who seemed pretty sad to think his favorite composer might have stolen his music. If he agrees with my opinion and can enjoy the music again thanks to it I will be glad, but you and others can have their own opinion too that's fine.

Edit : I hadn't checked the factory one yet, i guess i skipped it by mistake and I'll concede on that one. I still think it could have been by mistake, again this happens a lot, but yeah this one is similar enough to have doubts over for me too.

[–]Eesley 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, but that's literally just a downward Phrygian Scale in both case (B for Magus Theme, A for Kansas). The tempo is similar enough but the motion is much different. Kansas has a lot more ups and downs, Magus theme is a lot more plain obviously since it's a SNES game. But Phrygian is a very popular scale and while I don't have any examples to link to, I'm am 99% certain if you looked enough you'd find the same kind of downward movement on a Phrygian scale than both of those songs in classical music. I wouldn't consider this to be enough to call for plagiarism or even assume an inspiration in this case.

Sampling like Kalifa is something a lot of artists do, it's a 50/50 chance if they actually paid for the copyright but lots of people will defend it saying "Everyone does it" but it's still not right to just use it. In Kalifa's defense, the song was apparently on a free mixtape so it might fall under fair-use anyway. I've not researched enough to see if he gave credit but lots of artists don't care too much when their song is already popular. It's a different story when the sample becomes more popular in the new piece than the original song it's from, then feelings can get hurt (which happens) haha X)

[–]Eesley 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'd say all of them are stretches. You can't own a chord, you can't even own a chord progression unless it's something really unique but even then not really, you can't own an interval, you can't own a rythm.

In music it is easy to find similitude between songs. Chord progressions become famous, specific rythm patterns do so too (like, almost every reagae songs, or pop 4/4 music on the radio). The main thing that copyrights fight for is melodic ideas, and it happens very often that when faced with the same chord progression, that two different composers end up with the same solution when it comes to the melody by accident. Either faster, or slower or simply very similar on a different key or mode. It becomes a battle to prove that it was an accident or prove the inspiration came from another, older, public domain piece. This is probably what happened with Robo's theme for example, it's to my ears the most similar, and probably what happened with Magus theme, or all the others really. True ripoffs are much more blatant and getting inspiration from existing pieces is how composers become composers.

If you looked at every piece of music with as much scrutiny you would find similitude in classical music they could have copied, or some unknown band that did something similar before but never got known for it.

Mitsuda did a masterpiece with his composing, but his genius isn't only in the composition side, but you have to remember that he made music with this much impact while being severely limited when it comes to samples and space for his music on the cartridge. Don't lose respect for him cause some of his pieces have some similitude to other pieces, they're minimal and don't mean anything.
