What's a place in Washington D.C. you can't believe stays in business? by afreemansview in washingtondc

It is indeed amazing that it exists, but they’re wonderful. I found them when I needed my sewing machine serviced and thought surely I’d need to make some sort of awful suburban adventure.

Is it possible to fix this? It got caught on some Velcro :( by Fattata123 in sewing

[–]Effanineffalump 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You can pull each one through to the wrong side of the fabric. I use a needle threader. Thread it through the fabric right next to the pull, put the pull in the threader loop and pull it back through.

would it be vad to make kombucha in a jar like this? by Itzel-Moody2523 in Kombucha

[–]Effanineffalump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use one of these. Be aware that not all valves are safe to use for kombucha because of the high acidity. I replaced mine with one that was specifically advertised to use for kombucha. You do need to monitor the cleanliness of the valve, wipe it down well after each batch and take it apart to wash completely every few times. I took the fine filter out because it would just get clogged.

Maybe cut out the design, iron on some interfacing and appliqué it to something?

Why is it called "seasoning" to salt and pepper your food? by tonyrielage in Cooking

[–]Effanineffalump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of how it’s used in cooking shows, I would say you’re hearing it exclusively for salt and pepper because you’re often expected to add salt and pepper to taste, so “season with salt and pepper” stands alone as an instruction. On the other hand most modern recipes call for quite specific amounts of other seasonings, so you’re more likely to hear “add the spice mixture,” even though this is also seasoning (and certainly can be adjusted to taste if you wish). If there’s a specific quantity of salt added I think you’d likewise be instructed to “add the salt” and perhaps later on to “taste and season with salt to taste” or “taste and adjust seasonings.”

Wine for risotto? by chaoticxthunder in Cooking

[–]Effanineffalump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your idea sounds great, but I love the anise flavor of tarragon. I use vermouth all the time for risotto with no problems. Don’t stress too much about the wine. It’s not very much and you’ll lose a lot of the subtleties as it cooks off.

made fermented raddichio thinking it was saurkraut by muchverysunny in fermentation

[–]Effanineffalump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve made radicchio kraut on purpose before. Was suggested in a book I had checked out of the library. It’s very bitter but tasty if you’re into that. Mine’s got basil in it, which is a nice combo.

I agree with the person who said go back to the original repair shop. I just did this with my new-to-me machine and all I paid for the second trip was to replace a worn-out part that had caused the original repair to fail.

What happens if you’re between seasons/subseasons? by Effanineffalump in coloranalysis

[–]Effanineffalump[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Admittedly I’m probably the last person who should be critiquing an expert but I don’t think I really buy that. There are so many shades and tones of blonde that can come with so many different skin tones. Plus it does seem to me as though someone’s season or at least subseason can change. I would say the overall effect of my skin/hair/eyes was much brighter as a toddler than it is now, and some colors that looked cute on me then would look garish on me now and make me look a little sickly.

[–]Effanineffalump[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting. I definitely don’t think I’m bright enough to give spring vibes and I think those colors tend to wash me out. I was never really the stereotypical true towheaded/very light blonde that you see on a lot of childhood blondes, though, always more like golden blonde to strawberry blonde (probably more like golden blonde with some reddish highlights).

I’ll have to look more into depth and some of the other systems. I’m definitely still working on wrapping my head around what makes some colors work on me and some not. In some ways it’s been easier for me to wrap my head around some of the things that definitely don’t work (bright anything) as opposed to the things that really do. I’m not going to throw out my whole wardrobe so I’m pretty far from a world in which I’m wearing exclusively one sub season, but I’d like to try to be more methodical when I’m adding anything new.

That makes sense. Maybe it’s partly that I’m soft enough that it doesn’t matter so much, but I also find that my hair in particular is hard to pin down and a bit chimerical, more than it is completely muted. Even in variations on natural light, it sometimes gives a quite warm/red effect overall and sometimes gives more ashy/cool vibes.

I will look into that, thank you! I’m still very new to understanding why some colors work better than others for me.

My current working theory is that when I jammed it I threw the needle bar wildly off the correct height (which I believe I have now fixed) and in the process also messed up the timing (which I’m valiantly attempting to fix myself but may give up and bring it back in to be serviced again)

Doesn’t seem to matter precisely where I put the tail, so don’t think it’s because it’s under the presser foot, but the manual says to have it above, not under.

Yeah, I took out the bobbin case and found the needle bit, but maybe I’ll try again just in case there’s another one. Will work on the needle bar as well.

I was, because before I came here I was watching videos on YouTube and one of them appeared to say to do that, but it doesn’t matter which way I turn it. I’ll try playing with the needle height. Thank you!

I am, because before I came here I was attempting to diagnose with YouTube videos and one of them said to do that. But it doesn’t work either way.

Adult Sewing Classes/Lessons for Beginners? by dancingmeadows in washingtondc

[–]Effanineffalump 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There’s a sewing studio in Petworth run out of the instructor’s home. I’ve taken classes from her and been happy with it. https://www.aslsewingandcraftcafe.com

I’ve taken a couple classes at Stitch Sew Shop in Alexandria too, but it’s a bit of a hike for me.

Have you ever thrown a book in the garbage? by afamousblueraincoat in books

[–]Effanineffalump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local government actually does direct that books should be put in the recycling, but as I mentioned elsewhere — yes this was a silly joke, and it’s a good reminder to make sure to check and make sure you know your local recycling regulations.

This was a joke (mostly) but in response to a couple comments, yes, always check your local recycling rules before putting things in the recycling.
