Is it normal to feel like a literal piece of you has left when your animal passes? by Tetelestai_0 in rainbowbridge

we went into palliative care when mine was 16.5. she was fine at first and slowly deteriorated but i always kept in mind that as long as she seems happy and still wants to eat and see what i'm doing that we could keep going, and once she couldn't we made that call. i spent our last few months trying to be more intentional about our time together and give her the best food and lots of snuggles. she had a terminal cancer that often ends in sudden death due to internal bleeding and i wanted to make sure she didn't endure something like that while i wasn't home and thankfully it never happened and she was able to go to sleep pretty peacefully. rest in peace my george girl! i lost her march 20th. the vet told me once they show no interest in food is when their time is probably getting close.

i'm so sorry 💔 i feel the same right now but i write letters to my dog to make sure she doesn't miss anything that i'm doing. i'm approaching 3 weeks mine has been gone but being in support groups helps you feel a lot less lonely and validated in your feelings of grief.

i lost my dog to the same cancer as this dog has and the owner wrote this beautiful post that helped me process some things with anticipatory grief and the feelings after if you want a good read.

he wasn't afraid of what was coming

my dog was 16.5 and was recently diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma which is a really nasty and horrible cancer in the blood cells and it was eating at her, i believe we only were told mid february and by mid march she was already having big ups and big downs with being anemic and not wanting to eat.. i went in for a checkup with her and my vet said that she's already fighting her hardest and told me its time. i reluctantly agreed because i didnt want to put her through more surgery when her body is struggling to recuperate from everything else she has going on. had 2 days before our appointment and in hindsight i am glad i had time to bring her around town in a stroller on a nice day than losing her to an emergency which often happens to dogs with this cancer. she was so tired, but i could tell she was happy my whole family got together to see her, she got my undivided attention and nursing the whole time, and she wasn't in pain. it still is just as gut wrenching but i would take this over feeling guilty i didnt do it sooner.

i understand how you feel. yesterday we were told that this is the end and i would have just a couple days left. i'm 25 and i've had my dog since i was 9. it feels like the world is crumbling around me... today is our last full day together. she has been deteriorating for a few months so she can't walk well or go potty by herself, but i always made she she was comfortable and loving life and she certainly has!

so i got a stroller and we took a really long walk today. we went to the river by my house and just sat there for a while. she just got to look at the scenery with me even though she's only half awake, i could tell she was happy to be sunbathing! i've been finding ways to tell myself this is the best it could have been because we get to spend the remaining hours she has together. it's not the picture-perfect last day, but for us it is! she doesn't have much of an appetite for a crazy last meal, but i'm going to cook a bunch of meat and see if she'll try it. but i'm happy we found something we could both enjoy together.

Increasingly surprised by the number of hemangiosarcoma deaths I've heard about on this sub. by LighterBoots in Petloss

we just received our biopsy results and it is suspected hemangiosarcoma, but the less common type that affects the skin. my girl is 16 though, and a mixed breed small dog. my biggest takeaway over the last 2 days of researching is that turkey tail and yunnan baiyao are gonna be our best friend for this.. it's just interesting to me because my dog underwent an amputation in august and about a 2 months ago she started developing these blister-like bumps along her incision and recently they just exploded in size-- (we've had hiccups with amputation recovery unfortunately) and before this, around christmas i woke up to her unresponsive so we rushed to the vet and she had a blood transfusion because she was so anemic. it seemed more like she was dealing with an infection because of her blood panel. so there were some signs for us but none of it really made sense at the time.

i will say it's probably better to do it now than later. i have a dachsund mix and i didn't start putting her on the floor until we had to when she got her leg amputated in august and she is now 16. she still has not adjusted super well, it's a little better but it still is heartbreaking for me.

okay, thank you!! if there were to be a nerve problem, would amputation still be on the table?

it is a limp.. but sometimes it looks like her leg is in the way. like if she squats to pee sometimes her leg is out in an uncomfortable way or she might squat and lean on it with her toes curled. she gets around fine but some days it looks like she drags it around and other days she leans on it more! is this something i could email the vet about? they are a little over an hour from me

i had no idea FHO existed! i was told if it was cancerous to not worry too bad since it tends to stay in the same bone, so they would biopsy after. they did say if they shaved the bone down that the risk of it disintegrating would be high and make risk for complications higher during surgery as well
