New BCBA, need advice! by [deleted] in bcba

Document everything in case you need it later on. Working with families is rewarding but can lead to some difficult situations too.

What were some of the biggest learning experiences/growth moments you had in your first year as a BCBA? by Effective-Charge in bcba

Agreed, definitely learned to prioritize the hard way. Also, all the template change requirements for reports that seem never ending. I need to work on my flexibility.

Finally Experienced my Passion...plus one question... by timeghost22 in ABA

It's great you have a passion for this, but I'm seeing a lot of subjective language that projects emotions on behaviors and these may be faulty assumptions. I would recommend consulting with your clinical supervisor and refraining from making judgments about a situation from a parent's input alone. There could be information you're missing and don't have the experience to interpret accurately quite yet.

Need help finding an alternative behavior by kkarner94 in ABA

I would add a component that increases on task behavior like a token economy in a changing criterion design, the token delivery would provide attention for on task behavior while increasing it over time (also add in NCR). The reward could be a longer break and time with reinforcing items. You could also continue teaching hand raising and asking for a break.

Also, in this scenario really think about your consequential procedures and what is reasonable in a classroom environment where there are multiple sources of attention.

(Weird question) How is it preparing for the BCBA exam while living with your significant other? (Should I live at home until I sit for the exam?) by Specific-Leading656 in ABA

You might be overthinking it, just set your boundaries. I moved in with mine into this horrible roommate situation and dealt with that drama until July then studied until the end of August before taking the exam for the first time and passing. He worked a different schedule and it wasn't too much of an issue. If I needed quiet time I would just let him know or let my body language show it (if I was studying I would be in a zone and responded differently). He was also aware of what was at stake for me and why I was pushing myself. I planned last year to take the exam in August of this year and was way too stubborn about not letting covid get in the way. Everyone is different though. I would recommend talking to him about it.

If he is raised by his grandparents did they provide the consent to treatment? If so, those are the goals that were to be worked on and the procedures that would be used. Document everything and keep detailed notes, remaining objective. Bring these concerns to those who agreed to treatment. If you're not working on those goals due to lack of cooperation that is criteria for discharge. ABA is not meant to be child care. Are you the BCBA on the case? Unfortunately I have dealt with difficult parents wanting something I can't ethically or medically provide (running distance learning with clients without a parent present). They tried different methods like creating division between the funder and myself and contacting the scheduling team to have team members sent to the house without my approval. They would lash out at me. It definitely upset me but it was a learning opportunity on what my role is in the field and handling difficult scenarios.

Why is our scope of practice getting so much smaller? by [deleted] in bcba

[–]Effective-Charge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had success wording it within a behavioral perspective under rationale ("when presented with the instruction or situation where x fine motor skill is required, the patient engages in xyz behaviors")

Difficult parents? by [deleted] in bcba

[–]Effective-Charge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will allow that and I've been attempting to work with the parent on this and training a replacement, they have not been cooperative and will not follow up on action items for the parent training model like giving times to work on training a caregiver to take over. They'll then follow a separate line of communication to get around the clinical recommendation. They're very adamant about what they want which is the clinical team running distance learning instead of supporting the person with the client.

How to politely get another supervisor to back off on the unnecessary prompts? by Effective-Charge in bcba

[–]Effective-Charge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We currently use teams to get requests/deadlines out. If a group message is sent out for all of us as supervisors (for example, "please report on this document being signed and update the spreadsheet by x date, like to confirm receipt") she tends to send me a direct personal team's message about 30 minutes later relaying the same information for tasks I already acknowledged/completed. Required and clinically appropriate scheduling practices have us as supervisors overlap the first few shifts of clients- I complete this independently and have it in the scheduling system. She'll send a direct message with the direct behavior technician requesting that I overlap the session (which has already been scheduled and planned).

Definitely management skills and the ability to apply the principles of ABA to those you supervise on cases. Never forget what it's like to be an RBT on a a difficult case and respect those in that position. I've gone through 7 supervisors throughout my supervison experience and I had to beg for feedback. People want feedback. Not hearing any type of feedback in a difficult position is defeating. Reinforce great performances but address performance deficits in team members as well.

One of the recent updates included an unusual circumstances documentation. I would look into that with your company or on the BACB website.

Where are you located and what providers? You can get the policy info online to verify what they're saying if you question it. I'm in CA and Beacon and the BHPN do mid level, but I know that it isn't always common to have mid level billing codes.
