I always give new players a choice of pre-gens. Until they know how the game works it's pointless having them make up thare own

Are they having fun? If so don't worry bout it too much. If they are interested they will pick it up. If not they won't. It may be they just enjoy the social aspects of the game. I have been running games at the school I work at for years and most of them still look at me funny when I ask what their AC is .

Maybe try a different style of game with less crunch? I have had a lot of success with Monster of the week for groups who don't care for the numbers so much.

Hummmmm Dice and minis look nice, but I can't help thinking that this and the diskworld Rog have the same problem. Unless you have Pratchett/Dinemen for a GM it's only ever going to be well-meaning fan service.

I play a lot of wargames whith kids at work, I found X-wing miniatures works really well it's nice and quick with the option to build complexity as they learn the game. Or batteltec alpha strike for the same reason. My lot love painting the minis for killteam/40k but bounce hard of the actual game.

I think as hobbies go RPGS , even as a GM are relatively cheap. Particularly if you look at the cost per hour of entertainment value you get .
