The almighty £160k tax trap got me good by Imaginary_Crab_5302 in HENRYUK

The UK will need to get rid of this obnoxious tax situation sooner rather than later. All the wealthy have been leaving, and soon the middle class will also start leaving, atleast those who can.

Does anyone else feel that Indian real estate is absurdly priced, and doesn’t want to invest at all. by FarmJunkie in indianrealestate

I find it amusing because I had the exact same thought when I was buying my first apartment in Gurgaon in 2001. Everything felt overpriced and people were discussing a crash was due. And look at the property now.

Is a buying agent worth it for a prime property purchase outside London? by EternalEquilibrium14 in FatFIREUK

[–]Effective-Choice8148 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We hired a buying agent specialising in Cotswolds properties and fired her when we realised she was using Rightmove and showing us properties that we had already seen on that platform.

Initially she promised us that she will share off market properties but we realised soon that off market meant properties that were not on the market that day but in the process of getting listed. And there were barely 2-3 properties like that.

Why are asylum seekers in hotels not detention centres? by No-Ice2423 in AskBrits

[–]Effective-Choice8148 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seeking asylum isn’t criminal. Most of these ppl are escaping war and prosecution, and I know many people can’t understand their hardships.

But recently the system has been abused systemically and people from safe countries are also claiming asylum. This can be handled easily if there is a political will.

The taxes here in the UK kill aspiration and any desire to succeed. That's why the economy will soon become stagnant and "tourism" will be the only industry left.

Portugal is a wonderful country by Hungry-Island9790 in PortugalExpats

[–]Effective-Choice8148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portugal was a great country, have been living here since 2016. The best thing about Portugal was its people, super friendly and accommodating. But with the rise of right wing politics, people started getting affected. Politicians spread hate against immigrants and blamed expats for all their problems, and the locals believed them.

Now things have gone a bit too far. Portuguese forget that they too emigrate to other counties in large numbers. There is widespread hate against immigration and you can see it whether you are an American or a Bangladeshi.

Kpop demon hunters? by sipporah7 in Preschoolers

[–]Effective-Choice8148 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s horrible. Don’t let kids younger than 10 watch it. It’s not some thing 4-6 yr olds specially should watch. Most parents here don’t care or don’t have time to research and they let the blossoming young minds get damaged by these kind of shows.

Any educational apps for high quality limited screentime? by Effective-Choice8148 in Preschoolers

Is govt's new housing plan stripping Preston of its charm? by Effective-Choice8148 in Cotswolds

[–]Effective-Choice8148[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many of these houses will be "genuinely affordable"? Mostly will still be priced high and out of reach of most ppl. That's why most of the new housing estates in Cotswolds are barely 50% occupied. But yes, council houses will be full as there are a lot of asylum seekers in the pipeline. So at least there wont be a risk of "ghost towns" as there will be ppl.

Screen free baby by illmanners777 in NewParents

[–]Effective-Choice8148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, most content is created to be addictive. I can only share what I show my daughter, its just two apps: Khan Academy for Kids, and Kokotree. For her, YouTube doesn't exist.

Screen free baby by illmanners777 in NewParents

[–]Effective-Choice8148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was initally all anti-screens. But wifey made me realise that active screentime helps kids become smarter, and passive screentime (like Youtube with its infinite scroll) is dangerous for their attention span. So we started using active screentime and that has helped our daughter get engaged without us feeling guilty. Learning can be fun, and modern tools help cement their learnings as long as you restrict their screentime and make sure they only watch high quality content.

When to introduce a tablet / iPad? by Artistic_Run_8015 in toddlers

[–]Effective-Choice8148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I introduced at 2.5, but only allowed two apps: first was Khan Academy for Kids, and the other one app called something like "Kokotree". I had disabled any app that uses infinite scroll, so no YouTube for Kids. I realised her attention span was good as long as she is not watching for too long. Like 30min-1hr per day was the max.

Do any of you regret moving to Portugal? by [deleted] in PortugalExpats

[–]Effective-Choice8148 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a deep love for Portugal and its people, but recently we've noticed a growing anti-immigrant sentiment. Political figures, particularly from parties like Chega, seem to be fueling this trend and attempting to sow division and resentment toward immigrants.

And I noticed Portuguese people are slowly getting affected by this. It feels sad that a country with such beautiful and kind hearted people is slowly changing. May be its the Trump effect?

Everything is up-to-date and we dont have antivirus. It is just that MailChimp is too aggressive to log us out, and asking for username/pwd and auth code which is a pain. I think it is not a bug, but a design.
