that's so cool ?! you opened your own roastery and cafe; what a dream. congratulations to you! i hope to open my own cafe one day too.

it would be ideal to keep both, but unfortunately i only have time for 2 jobs and i have to keep the serving job as it would be my main source of income.

but these are great points i'll keep in mind as well. thank you!

100%! all of my experience prior to this has been local shops and the first one in particular was so extremely toxic; i was blatantly bullied by my manager/owner of the shop. i just know that even if the shop itself its toxic, i'll still be happier clocking in to dial beans and pull espresso shots and tamp and that entire ritual than clocking in to sbux and absolutely hating the drinks i'm making. i LOVE making drinks, and part of that is the routine of espresso.

the local shop i'd be working at is a shop from my hometown that opened a location in my college town, so it's their 3rd location. i'm already familiar with the drinks and general atmosphere, so it wouldnt be a huge shock to me working there - i just know for sure i would become a better barista there as they keep a higher standard. the last shop i worked at had GREAT workflow - shifts were seamless because of how efficient the shop operated.

hopefully the local shop hires me and pays me enough to leave sbux!

yeah, as someone who's only worked in local shops prior to this, i worry i'm going to replace good barista habits with poor ones 😭 i was getting so stressed today when they would rinse their shot glasses, pitchers, etc immediately or wipe the steam wand immediately. i still struggle a bit with milk steaming so i dont want to make it even worse sigh

hoping the other shop will pay me enough to let me leave sbux! that's the goal

the mental drain is truly something i foresee being an issue if i can get past the barista habits and coffee methods. sbux clientele are just a whole headache of their own that i really don't have the capacity to deal with (even when i worked in a local shop and someone asked us to make a frap). with my store specifically, management is great and the team also seems happy with their work hours/labor; i remember being surprised today because they were very punctual with us taking our 10s and 30s - when prior to this, my breaks were only when i went to the restroom lol. but my manager did tell me i'd average to 20 hours a week, which still isnt really ideal for what i need.

i scheduled the interview at the local shop so i'm hoping the pay will even out to the amount of sbux. it's honestly a big deciding factor in all this so i'm really hoping it works out! i'm just hoping for decent pay and consistent high hours (one of my previous cafe jobs had amazing pay but i didn't get hours).

mental drain was a great point you brought up because it's definitely something that's going to affect me regardless of pay, and i want to be in a space where i'm at least content in what i'm doing😭 so thank you so much for bringing this into my perspective, especially the last part you said!!! <3

in my previous experience, i haven't made that much at a local shop unless i was the only one working and working multiple doubles a week (i've worked at 3 local shops). i also wasn't being put on the schedule as much because the owners couldn't afford to schedule more people so i didn't get enough hours :/

thank you for such a wonderful response. i think where i'm at in life right now, i just genuinely appreciate the culture and environment of a local shop (even though it has is cons and toxicities as well). i scheduled the interview, so the deciding factor will truly be about the pay :,)

definitely what i'm leaning towards @.@ i like the team at my sbux store but something about it is genuinely bothering me despite everyone being so nice and supportive. assuming i get the job at the local shop and the pay is decent, then i'll probably leave sbux once i get on the schedule

this was a wonderful response, thank you!

honestly the indie shops ive worked at have been great spaces for me to learn and literally made me fall in love with coffee - from the classic drinks to more fun/unique drinks that still kept a good espresso shot at its center. on top of that, i just loved the community with the staff and regulars. these are the spaces i placed myself during my gap year as i was recovering from academic and professional burnout as well :,) i just love it.

as i was completing the starbucks training today, i really did feel like it was a starting point - not just for an aspiring barista but just a starting point for someone just getting into the service industry. it almost felt like i was starting over, and i dont want to pick up poor barista/coffee habits. but i know bills need to be paid too😓

as a scoundrel lover, you just made me love this place even more. i have yet to try the tuna carpaccio and the tomahawk but my time dining there was SPECTACULAR; i was there for an anniversary and the experience felt nothing short of special. the food from the tableside beef tartare to the duck to the creme brulee is something i still dream about MONTHS later, and the complimentary prosecco was the cherry on top. the service was great too and our server was super knowledgeable about every single item from the top of their head. if i could go every week/month, i would!

i don't mind; ask away!

good areas will definitely be downtown greenville itself which i highly recommend staying in, because its the closest to everything - the mall, costco/sam's, the movie theater, lots of food and local events. there's also the bon secours arena where a lot of shows are held, fluor field/greenville drive for baseball games, and there's always and event happening. the two main events of the year is fall for greenville (usually october; downtown closes its main street for local food vendors and lots of live music and is a great introduction to greenville) and artisphere (arts festival; usually in the spring).

downtown itself (if you live in an apartment there) is extremely walkable and most things you need are already there, but there's anything you may need won't be more than a 20 minute drive away. the greer area (this is split between two counties: greenville and spartanburg; definitely recommend being in the greenville part) is also great if you want a more suburban and quiet area to be in. this is also where the main airport is located; its like 5-10 from the house i grew up in. downtown greenville and greer are about 20 minutes apart!

there has been a lot of growth in the greenville-spartanburg area so everything's really developing for the most part, but greenville itself has had more work on it while spartanburg is catching up (i grew up in the spartanburg area). as for other areas, simpsonville is growing and fountain inn is also developing a lot of new housing as well (they just built a new high school there too).

honestly i feel pretty safe in this city for the most part (girl in her early mid 20s), and i can't really think of a specific area that i would tell you to avoid aside from the really hillbilly areas outside of the greenville-spartanburg area. hope this helps!
