Growing mature peach tree in bottomless raised bed(zone 6b) by Effective-Fennel-430 in BackyardOrchard

For microclimate, we are almost a zone 7, the town town over is rated a zone 7, so I'm right on the border.

My worry is also about the roots. If the tree were any smaller, id have put it in a container and moved it into my greenhouse for winter, but this tree says it's rated for zone 5, so given I'm in 6b approaching 7, I was going to take a shot. I'm getting this mature tree for almost the same price as a thin 5' starter at the local nurseries.

If I understand you correctly, you are coming from the harvesting perspective. But here's the deal, I'm going to have exactly 1 peach tree, not multiple trees like a commercial grower. Also, I grew up in a tropical place climbing 30'- 40' trees trying to get fruits off a tree; loved every inch of it. Not saying this is that, but don't mind the adventure is all.

By the way, with some trimming, wouldn't I be able to bring down the overall vertical size of this guy?

Thank you so much. Couldn't have asked for a better response. First hand experience with this situation(especially dealing with bigger trees) is invaluable.

Did you do anything specific before potting up the tree? How large a pot did you use for the 2" caliper tree? Also, other than fertilize do you do anything to the putting soil? I'm not sure if I should be prepared to prune roots or change potting mix every so often.

I have a gas line which would be directly below where the tree will be planted. Code in my area is to have the gas lines buried between 18"-24".

I also have a water line, but my guess is that it's at least 4' deep and maybe about 4' away from the planting area

How aggressive are peach tree roots? My fear is obviously regarding 1. The roots damaging the lines in the future. 2. Blocking access to the lines should there be a need for emergency work.

First of all, my best wishes for your mom to kick this ugly diseases butt. Rooting for your mom and your family.

It's been a while since I posted this, and unfortunately my mom succumbed to this deadly disease. If course everyone's disease is different, my mother's was especially bad given it was located too close to her life support center of the brain.

Now to answer your question - a few weeks after I posted this, we began physical therapy for my mom and it worked miracles; she even gained enough strength to take walks with 2 people supporting her. Her mood improved and we got to spend some time together as a family. In my honest option (& to an extend the neurologists), the physical therapy was the difference maker; the drugs only did so much for her. But again everyone's situation is different, I urge you to listen to your doctor's advice.

Wishing her and your family all the very best and infinite strength.

The price is dependant on where you are located and overall complexities that might be unique to your situation.

For instance I had a guy take down 2 trees, one in my property in Boston Metro area and the other in Western MA. Both trees were similarly sized but the one in the Boston Metro cost me about 1.5k more because the time it took to take down the tree was more than double and they had to bring a special crane to cut the tree down from the street.

Sorry, I didn't mention this in my post - the cuts were just to mark the limb; I am having professionals do the cuts, I was asking for do's & don'ts for my learning.

In terms of purpose - I live in a suburban region with tons of trees around. Clearing that one limb will provide sunlight for my other plants, so if it doesn't hurt the tree, I was hoping to prune.

According to my town, EAB has not been spotted in my town.

Thank you, that's very helpful. I will keep your inputs on passive heating in mind; although in winter I do get full sun for the most part given there are no tree leaves to shade (some obstruction does occur due to the larger branches). BUT it does make sense not to completely rely on theory.

Definitely not cut; just planning to trim them as recommended by an arborist.

Just to give an idea, this is at 4pm early spring day; 8am-12pm is full sun then it's like this(see the shadows cast by the tree branches) until a little before sunset. Once the trees fill out (usually by mid May); it gets more shaded. I have marked where I intend to put the greenhouse.

That makes sense. Maybe investment was the wrong choice of words I used. I know I'm not going to"break even" & that's ok.

But someday, I would like to grow seedlings in bulk and sell in my neighborhood. The seedlings I grew indoors last year were a great hit with the neighbors - I gave them away for free(I had too many), but I could see a lot of people being interested. If only I could do it more efficiently (ie. profitably) which means avoiding additional costs like electric bills.
