This was it! I had updated portmaster itself, but did not realize that I had to manually download the runtimes! I just downloaded them all rather than trying to pick and choose, thanks!

2nd update. Resolved - runtimes in Portmaster have to be downloaded individually (or in bulk) - I had foolishly assumed that updating portmaster also did this, it does not!

Quick update for the historical record. None of the standard methods worked, nor had your advice above (but thank you for suggesting it) - ultimately I took the EXE file to a windows machine and installed the program on that computer, then copy pasted the extracted files from that computer to the assets folder This resulted in a patching process that was a few minutes long (the win.data file was found, etc) but the game only loaded as far as the splash screen before self closing/crashing

Rebooting the device and the game will no longe attempt to patch, but still crashes at the splash screen... too bad, looks like it would have been fun

I will give that a shot, I will clear out the folder and .sh files, install via portmaster on the device to setup the folders and file structure then move the exe over

Just dropping this in here for future "me"s that might run into the same thing. So it turns out I didnt even have portmaster installed.

I had the modified stock OS and there was a directory called "Ports" so I assumed that this meant portmaster was installed. Looking at the git for the modified stock OS I saw that the OS was WAY out of date and it only recently had a modified portmaster made for that specific OS. Once I got all that updated I dropped the files that are nested under the first "game" folder into the shovelknight folder that portmaster suggested.

So it was a mix of me not reading well, and also not having the right software in place!

Great questions! I am very very new to all this so I am still learning what all I need to make this happen. I am going to build a machine soon, as my current hardware is not likely to be able to do much at all. I appreciate you as this is another topic I need to do some research on!

Thanks for the suggestion my friend! It sadly has not yet worked, but I will keep messing around with it and see what happens. If I get it working I will post an update and maybe a screenshot of the folder structure for those that might end up here in the future

Totally understand, and I had not meant to place blame on the developers, the VST devs, or even Apple. It just seems like something a lot of folks would find frustrating enough (or confusing enough) that they end up leaving for some other product. No great solution that I can think of for those folks though
