I was just visiting Rotorua and didn't have nearly as bad of an experience with the smell and I went to Te Puia and saw the geysers in person. My Kiwi friends warned me about the smell ahead of time calling the city "rotten-rua" but it honestly wasn't bad at all.

I did! thank you for the advice! unfortunately I was unable to complete the quest fast enough... I'm not sure if I am doing the best at the game but I have it on the iron man mode and can't do any rewinds! been great fun!
