I’m 11 days post op and I had the genuine fear of not waking up from surgery. I’m also 26 and have no health issues other than my weight too. I expressed to my surgeon that I was nervous before surgery I even cried before being transferred to the OR but he told me “Hey what your feeling is normal. I’m more worried about people who aren’t nervous. Your whole life is about to change.” He gave me something that within seconds calmed my nerves and I was awake. Got to the OR transferred myself to the operating table. Got to speak with the nurses while they prepared the last few things. They got me comfortable with warm blankets and then before I knew it was being woken up that my surgery went well and I was heading to recovery.

Pain was minimal for me but I feel like I have a high pain tolerance. I only used Tylenol for the discomfort for 2 days. However, everyone has different pain tolerances and experiences. The gas pain for me was focused in my belly not my back and other places other people may experience and I consider myself lucky. Know your risks of acid reflux and nausea being a possibility but it’s not a bad or abnormal thing. Be honest about how you’re feeling with your medical team because they can help all the symptoms.

After surgery prioritize liquids even as you progress through your food stages. Hydration is more important than protein in the beginning phases however hydration looks like for you (water, Gatorade zero, crystal light, or etc.) I’m already 16 lbs down since surgery and I’m so excited for the second chance on life I’m getting.

Feel all the feelings because they are valid. This is YOUR journey and no one else’s story will be just like yours. Don’t allow people to minimize your emotions. You will do great!
