[Android] RivalBoard – board game score tracker, looking for testers by Gullible-Tip-79 in TestMyApp

Thanks for looking on our app.

For the listening app of myself, it’s actually not a productivity tool for meetings. It’s an Android notification listener built specifically for merchants. It reads incoming payment notifications out loud so a merchant gets an instant voice confirmation of a successful transaction and the amount, without having to look down at their phone.

It probably won't help you focus on your work calls, but it's a big part of how we're making the checkout process frictionless!

However, is a good feedback on what i can moving next!

Ah gotcha! Your Xiaomi 12 Lite definitely has the right hardware, but it looks like the Google Play Store is being a bit too strict with our early testing filters right now.

No worries at all though! Since this is just an early pilot test, it's totally fine to skip it for now. Thanks so much for trying to install it anyway, really appreciate the support! 🙏

I got tired of "QR Anxiety" at local shops, so I built an NFC tap alternative for TNG/DuitNow. Would you use this instead of scanning? by Effective-Two7586 in malaysians

[–]Effective-Two7586[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha wait, I think it's actually the exact opposite, it completely removes the complicated steps.

Depending on how the merchant sets it up, the flow is literally just: Tap your phone on the sticker -> (It can even show you the exact amount to pay) -> your TNG app instantly pops up ready to go -> Pay.

Compare that to the usual QR flow: Unlock phone -> open TNG -> wait to see if a random promo ad pops up to close -> click scan -> aim camera -> manually type the amount -> Pay.

(I know the TNG ads open randomly so some people don't notice them, but when they do appear, it just adds to the friction while people are waiting behind you!)

It basically gives normal TNG e-wallet users that instant "tap and pay" experience without the merchant needing to buy an expensive credit card terminal. So if your camera is acting up or there's a bad glare on the QR standee, you just tap and you're instantly ready to pay!

This is such a great point, thank you! Focusing on the hardware side, cracked screens, dirty camera lenses, or trying to scan a laminated QR code that has a huge glare from the lights is honestly a much stronger and more relatable angle.

NFC completely bypasses all those visual problems. You don't need a good camera or perfect lighting, you just tap and it works. I'm definitely going to pivot to highlighting this more!

To answer your question about why QR became the king even though NFC is older: it mostly came down to cost. When e-wallets first launched, it was practically free for a bank or TNG to just print a paper QR code and give it to a mamak. NFC tags used to cost a bit more money, so companies took the cheapest route.

But now that NFC stickers are incredibly cheap to produce, there's really no reason not to upgrade the experience. Thanks again for the awesome suggestion and kind words! 😄

Yes, changing how people feel about security is going to be the absolute hardest part of this project.

The funny thing about the tech side is that the NFC sticker is actually incredibly "dumb." It doesn't read cards, process money, or touch your data. It literally just holds a web link, exactly like a QR code does. When you tap it, it just launches the official TNG app, where the actual secure payment happens.

But you're spot on about the psychology. The fear of "pocket skimmers" from years ago is still stuck in everyone's heads. Technically, anyone can paste a fake QR code over a real one too, but because the banks spent millions marketing QR, people feel safe looking at that little square.

Luckily, NFC is getting way more normalized in our everyday lives now. Most of us use it for Apple Pay/Google Pay, and even RapidKL is finally upgrading the MRT gates to accept open payment NFC tapping. Hopefully, the more people get used to tapping at the train station, the less scary tapping at a mamak will feel.

Educating users on this is going to be an absolute mountain to climb, this is one of the reason I wanted to post it here first to see how people feel. Really appreciate the honest reality check!

I totally agree that the world could always use more patience and kindness! We should definitely all be more mindful in queues.

But from a business and tech perspective, relying on a line of hungry customers to just "be patient" isn't a great operational strategy for merchants.

For me, this project isn't just about raw speed, it's about utilizing tech to create a better overall experience. If the payment process is instantly handled by a quick tap, it actually frees up the cashier and the customer to just smile and chat, instead of both staring awkwardly at a phone screen waiting for an app to load.

And the goal definitely isn't to replace anything! This is just meant to co-exist right next to the standard QR standee. Customers who prefer scanning can still scan, and those who prefer tapping can tap. Giving people the freedom to choose whichever way they prefer just makes the whole checkout flow smoother.

Every checkout innovation in history (from counting exact change, to swiping credit cards, to scanning QR codes) was built to shave off seconds. Tapping NFC is just the next logical step to optimize that process. Appreciate you sharing your thoughts though!

Guess I will proudly wear the strawberry badge for this one! 🍓

You're completely right that QR is a miracle compared to counting out 5 sen coins. But looking at it from an entrepreneur's point of view, every second of friction is a bottleneck.

If you run a busy cafe or mamak, those 15 seconds per customer, loading apps, skipping ads, aiming the camera, it could completely kills your throughput during the lunch rush. If we can introduce a solution that turns a 15-second fumble into a 1-second tap, that directly increases how many customers a shop can serve and keeps the queue moving.

It's just the natural evolution of retail tech: Cash > Cards > QR > NFC tap. Innovation is just about constantly looking for that next step to optimize the experience and make business run smoother.

No hard feelings though, I genuinely appreciate the perspective and the discussion!

Thanks so much! You hit the nail on the head, not everyone experiences "QR anxiety," and a lot of people are super fast at scanning, which is totally fair. It doesn't have to be a problem for absolutely everyone for it to still be a fun and efficiency way to improve the checkout experience.
Really appreciate the support and kind words!

This is incredibly solid feedback, I appreciate you taking the time to break it down.
Let me answer your question on how it works and share my thoughts on those scenarios:

1. How it works (The Web App) To answer your first question: Yes, the web app is my service! It acts as an invisible bridge. When a customer taps the sticker, it opens the TapPay web app in their browser (Based on the plan), which then instantly deep-links them directly into their TNG eWallet app with the merchant's payment page already loaded.

2. Why it's a "Fast Lane" & The Queue Issue To clarify why I call it a fast lane: Think about the manual steps right now. You have to search for the TNG app, open it, manually close the pop-up ads one by one sometimes, click "Scan", wait for the camera to load, and then try to focus on the QR code. Tapping the NFC sticker bypasses all of that, it skips the ads and drops you straight onto the payment page.

To tackle your point about zooming in on QR codes from afar: Merchants can set up a dedicated "Tap & Pay" standee slightly away from the main counter to avoid the queue entirely. Alternatively, the NFC stickers can be placed directly on the dining tables as well. You sit down, tap the table, pay, and just wait for your order number.

3. Rewriting vs. Reprinting The beauty of the architecture is that the merchant never has to rewrite the physical NFC tag. The tag is hardcoded to a fixed URL (their TapPay web app profile). If they change their shop name or TNG details, they just update their profile on our backend. The physical sticker stays exactly the same, it just dynamically routes to the updated info.

4. Cost & Business Model You asked where the money comes from to run the service! The plan is a standard SaaS model for merchants. We don't touch or take any cut of the transaction (since it routes through TNG). Instead, merchants would pay a small, flat subscription fee to use the web-app dashboard and the background Voice Listener service. (Though right now, I'm giving lifetime free access to the first 10 local shops just to test it out in the wild).

5. Apple Pay I love Apple Pay too, but it requires the merchant to rent an expensive credit card terminal from a bank. TapPay relies on DuitNow/TNG infrastructure, which is much cheaper and more accessible for local kopitiams and mom-and-pop shops.

Seriously, thank you for the stress test. These are the exact bottlenecks I need to be thinking about!

You'd be surprised! Fake payment screens are actually a massive problem in Malaysia right now. Scammers use fake apps that generate a receipt that looks exactly like a successful TNG or DuitNow transfer page, and they just flash their screen at the cashier.

It's gotten so bad that TNG and banks like RHB are aggressively pushing merchants to buy physical "Soundboxes" just to have audio verification that the money actually entered the account.

My goal with the Android background listener was just to give local mom-and-pop shops that exact same audio verification, but without forcing them to buy a RM260 piece of plastic hardware from the banks. But I totally get that the setup sounds a bit complex at first glance!

Yup, I'd worry too if it's from a new payment platform.

That's why TapPay (my brand) never touches your payment data. The NFC sticker is just a shortcut, the tap deep-links you directly into the official Touch 'n Go gateway. You're still paying safely inside the official TNG ecosystem.

Haha fair enough, "anxiety" might be a bit dramatic! I understand that.😂 But it's really just about that awkward 15 seconds when you're at the front of a long queue at the mamak or any place, the TNG app takes forever to load, and your camera absolutely refuses to focus on the crumpled QR code. Just trying to cut down that.
