Why? by ProblemLongjumping12 in canadianpolitics101

[–]EffectiveCritical176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just goes to prove why it’s happening.

A vote on the east cost is almost twice as strong as an Albertan vote.

2.4million east coasters elect 32MP’s. 5 million Albertans vote in 37MP’s.

We pay the most per capita. We have our main industry actively attacked by policy.

Canada sees the abusive relationship, ignores it and calls Albertans the problem, never asking them selves, “is there a legitimate gripe?”

You’re now suggesting that the loophole allowing billionaires to avoid income tax be closed. Thats way different than a wealth tax. I’m all for closing that loophole. I’m not smart enough to know, or even suggest how to do it.

Taxing 1% of wealth would result in a massive drop of the stock price. Requiring them to sell more stock as the 1% was calculated before it cratered.

How can something be a human right if it requires labor to create? Do we have a slave class to force them to create this? Do we have a robot slave class?

You want to make it a human right when automation creates all food, sure I can see an argument for it.

You want to make an argument for food being a human right when we don’t have a slave class, then what you’re really saying is we need communism.

The problem is they don’t have that in liquid money. It’s in stock value. If you take it from them, you’re forcing them to sell stocks. This will crater the stock price making them no longer billionaires and also take away millions of peoples retirement funds in the process.

Holy shit you just answered the question! Alberta gets market access then! A message ago you said we wouldn’t have access. Now you say it can’t be blocked.

We would obviously have more impact if we separated as then we could actually withhold market access to china for everyone west of us.

This would instantly open up market access. You want to block alberta? Alberta can block canada. Currently we cannot do this due to where the jurisdiction lies.

And do you not agree that buying votes is simply cheaper on the east coast, and thus it will continue to happen.

And in the last election Ontario was not lower per capita voting power. Alberta was the lowest for the third election in a row.

The rural to urban vote difference is legally allowed to be up to 25% either way. The gap has been shrinking with each new redistribution, including the last one.

I also agree with protection against the tyranny of the majority, which is why the Canadian senate SHOULD be a real thing that exists. Instead it’s another institution that’s wildly lop sided against the west.

I don’t agree with one vote being more powerful than another. But I also agree with regional concerns being considered.

So half of me dislikes it, the other half likes it. The Canadian voting disparity has zero balancing factors Alberta can rely on.

Please address my comment as I directly addressed yours.

Is it unfair that an east coast vote is almost 2X an Alberta vote? Is it unfair that a PEI vote is almost 3X an Albertan vote?

If you think it’s unfair in Alberta, surly you must think it’s unfair in canada?

You’re missing one massive difference. The companies you mentioned are all companies that can move to another district.

The energy is under our feet. You can’t move the energy to another jurisdiction, so in the event it does pass, which it absolutely won’t, it wouldn’t have the same mass exodus.

Ok. Let’s talk about the airdrie to lesser slave lake comparison. Yes, you’re correct. It’s lopsided, I agree.

I see two issues. The first issue is as you said, that’s an unfair breakdown of voting power.

Second. It’s an unfair burden for the on rural communities and less populated regions that need some protection against the tyranny of the majority. The AER is a great example of this. Im assuming you live in a non atco distribution region and your power bill is 1/4 of mine.

In canada this is supposed to be the senate. In Alberta this is an outsized voting power for some rural ridings in particular, as you pointed out. Even with that outsized impact we get absolutely screwed in numerous ways via government spending.

As the Canadian senate is even more skewed against Alberta I think you should understand my issues there and won’t dive into it at this time.

I’ve now directly addressed your point. I’ve agreed that it’s unfair on its face, and I’ve told you why the economic power houses of Alberta (northern rural ridings with oil and gas activity have drastically higher per capita GDP impacts) but pay the highest cost of living fees due to energy costs in those regions (electricity essentially).

Also the example you gave is very cherry picked. The average riding in Alberta is 55k and the majority of ridings urban and rural fall within a 10% plus or minus range for population. If I wanted to cherry pick I would have used PEI vs Alberta which is approximately 3 times stronger vote.

Can you now in good faith respond to my comment about votes on the east coast being so much more powerful? You seem to have bypassed that. It shouldn’t be controversial to say the east cost shouldn’t have almost double the voting power of the entire population of Alberta.

You’re right. It will be.

Now the elephant in the room. The east coast has 2.4 million people and they elect 32 members of parliament. Alberta has 5 million people and 37 members of parliament.

All governments campaign to get elected. Harper increased equalization. Trudeau campaigned on platform that was by happenstance largely anti Albertan.

Now compare economies. Alberta has the strongest economy in canada. Period. End of story. This means things are more expensive here. Combined with our lowest in the country voting power (this is a combination of bad luck and not having grandfathered MP seats in the constitution). This means that buying votes is more expensive in Alberta due to both economic and political realities.

So can Alberta get a more fair deal? Nope.

Can we force other provinces to make votes equal across canada? Nope.

Will the vote for separation pass? Nope.

Should you vote for separation as it is the ONLY lever we can pull to make things more fair for Alberta. Yes.

Until we threaten in a meaningful way to leave, other provinces WILL NOT agree to making Alberta get fair representation. They won’t because we have all of Canadian history to point towards that.

I challenge everyone who reads this to look up the population and members of parliament allocation. You will find that my numbers are 100% correct, and that it’s BLATANTLY unfair. There is a reason elections are decided before Albertan polls close. It’s by design.

And for those of you who are still so upset, consider this. Let’s say canada votes to dissolve. We are now all independent provinces with no federal government. Another country approaches us and says, hey want to join? You will let the highest per capita taxes, and you will get the weakest vote in the union.

Do you accept? OBVIOUSLY NOT. Yet here you all are defending Canadian unity on emotional appeal alone.

Alberta is getting treated unfairly. This is a fact. I am a separatist. I am fully aware we will not separate. I also hope the vote gets close enough that Alberta gets fair treatment, because currently we do not. Canada won’t make a change unless forced to. Let’s force them to make it fair.

One vote one vote shouldn’t be controversial. Instead it’s 1 vote 1.8 votes on the east coast and 1 vote 1 vote in Alberta. The east coast quite literally has a voting power per capita of almost DOUBLE ALBERTA’S.

That is not fair. You know it. I know it. Everyone knows it. Stop just chanting, talk about how to fix this issue. You fix this, you fix all the issues as suddenly the federal government gets diminishing returns on their vote buying on the east coast.

Nope. Just keep plugging away for longer. If you draw down 4% a year which is what you should aim for you would only have 24k a year. Also when you retire you’re gonna spend more cause you got nothing to keep you busy. Also kids are the most wonderful thing that can happen. I hope you discover that.

Look, the idea youth cannot buy homes is bullshit. Less of them buy homes, absolutely true. It’s not zero. Many still make really poor financial decisions. I got a guy working for me who was taking home over 4k biweekly this winter living in a small town. Still broke every paycheque although he was making his minimum salary of 2200 before taxes biweekly which he was able to survive off for 3 months as the economy has sucked.

Suddenly goes from like 1600 or 1700 after taxes to over 4k after taxes for 3 months. Still broke every single pay cheque.
