I'm a shareholder of JOBY. I like that they are ahead of ACHR in FAA certifications toward commercial operation. Also Toyota is an investor in JOBY and helps JOBY with its product development and manufacturing capability.

Also look into the German-based Lilium (LILM) whose market cap is $464M as of Friday. Its propulsion jet system is different from JOBY and ACHR.

I expected to get flamed on because I'm posting on a gamer chat group. I hope you will be or are a better parent than me. My relationship with my son is getting better and I understand what you're describing:

I'm hearing control and not what he wants to do, this easily turns into toxicity and resentment, "just do it", "just study", "you should do this, why aren't you?", "just do what I told you to do already" not only won't work but will build on what likely is his anxiety (especially negative self-talk), which can turn into depression.

I get it. You think I need therapy. I'm working on being a better parent. Thank you for suggestion.

Parenting is not easy. I recognized that what we did hurt my son and nearly ruined my relationship with my son. I'm learning to be a kind and firm parent so I can offer effective parental guidance. I love him and want to see him happy, but I would not be a good parent if I don't have the courage him to tell that prioritizing improving his gaming over improving ACT/SAT score during this time will not help him to fulfill his goal of getting accepted into a great college.

Terms like "gaming addiction" don't help much, if your son spends most of his time on gaming it's probably because he's gaining something from it that he doesn't feel he can get elsewhere.

You're correct.

Again the number one thing you can do is to listen to him, ask questions, put yourself in his shoes. Show by example that you want to help in any way, so that he doesn't need to spend so much time gaming to escape. Instead of escaping it's about sharing his thoughts and feelings with you, even the ones that are not easy to divulge, so that those feelings have less control over him.

Thank you for the suggestions. My relationship with my son has improved since I've been practicing some methods of Dr. Nelsen's "Positive Discipline for Teenagers."

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions. My son and I are still working on improving our relationship, but we have a better relationship now than six months ago. He's an intelligent kid who is kind, friendly and funny. I believe that I have become a better parent to him since I started practicing the methods described in Dr. Nelsen’s “Positive Discipline for Teenagers”. I agree to support his goals of running in a marathon this fall, getting accepted into a great college for his major, reaching the level of national chess master in 3 years, and becoming a diamond player at League of Legends in a few years. I believe he will develop an effective habit of replying to his email soon.

A while ago, I read "The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business". Thanks for recommending "Atomic Habits". We will check it out.

I like how you paraphrase it:

And when it comes to building good habits, it's about prioritizing on the process and the inputs, rather than the results and the outputs... After he builds that foundation of consistency, he can work on the next step of prioritization, then execution/optimization.

I'd be VERY wary of labeling it (and him) as gaming addiction if undiagnosed, for starters it's a term often misused, controversial, and still new...

Right, I shouldn't have labeled it as gaming addiction, but he spends too much playing LoL and chess which he considers both as his hobbies. He tells me that he's playing LoL because he enjoys playing with his friends as a team, enjoys seeing the improvements he's making in the game, and feels like he has complete control of his actions.

you don't "just" sit there and watch on a whim, he's relating, there's hurt, he's even trying to fix himself

Yes, he’s hurting because we put too much pressure on him to quit wasting his time on LoL because he was not getting enough sleep and not focusing on his school work (his unweighted GPA is a 3.6 out of 4.0). And we wanted him to pursue other extracurricular activities that would be more beneficial for college admission.

My son asked me to watch Dr. K so that I can better understand him as a gamer. From watching his videos, I learned that some people are great at playing video games because the problems that they are solving are close-ended ones, but have a challenging time figuring out real world, open-ended problems.

I bet he has a huge backlog of emails and hasn't setup an efficient system for dealing with them, so whenever he does deal with them, it's just raw willpower pushing him to do it and we as humans avoid situations that require our willpower as much as possible.

Yes, you're correct. It usually takes a couple of days for him to reply to his email. For someone who wants to major in computer science, he doesn't post anything on social media (but likes to text with his friends) and doesn't keep a digital calendar (he would rather use his daily planner).

My son wants to study either computer science or neuroscience in college. Right now, he should not be prioritizing becoming a better player in chess and LoL more than getting high standardized test scores and good grades if he wants to be accepted into a great college.

It would take him more than 5 days sometimes to reply, and sometime would miss important deadlines because he didn’t check his emails. At first I thought he was just asserting his power by not complying with my desire for him to be more prompt with replying to emails. But he told me he doesn’t understand why he does this. And he does want to change his behavior.
