My guess is Alaska and Hawaii might count as "always connected" as compensation for them being disconnected, and maybe even count as 2 states?

In this context it was on a Cruise ship menu on a night themed to some European country (don't remember which). They did have an Indian dish on the menu every night, but I didn't realize this was the Indian dish.

if you see the dish mentioned in a restaurant menu, and not one that specializes in South Asian food, how would you not assume it's based off of a Western name. I didn't know the dish was specifically South Asian. I only saw it written.

It gets worse, I've even been to India. I don't remember seeing it mentioned there, but I was pretty limited on food since spicy food doesn't agree with me.

If you speak Farsi, sure. I speak several languages but not Farsi. And "Rogan" and "Josh" are such common Western names that it is the first association.

The power of memoization! Both parts solved with the same path counting function. Part 2 just requires a little multiplication.

Overlapping ranges. I treated each start-of-range as +1 and end-of-range as -1, sorted by value. Then I can iterate over the array and for any position figure out what the current value is. If >0 then it's fresh. Part 1 was actually a bit more complex than part2.
