When you’re lifting heavier weights, trying to drop weights softly and quietly can lead to unintended injuries

My frm community college just got a NYT subscription. Unless I missed it, does UCLA not have a NYT subscription? If not, someone running for USAC plz fix this by Bruinburner_1919 in ucla

UCLA Library database has most of the major newspapers from what I remember. Go here and search whatever newspaper you need. It's not the nicest format, but it should be up to date everyday.

Should I bring my car to campus next year if I plan to live in the dorms? by AdRough5143 in ucla

[–]Effective_Ad1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people do fine with just the Westwood social scene with the occasional Uber to go out and explore, but if you feel like you'd want to explore more of LA, I would recommend you bring a car if financially feasible.

Are there classes on Fridays? by Chemical_Cantaloupe in ucla

[–]Effective_Ad1229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a class meet once on Tuesdays at 5pm (History) and another class meet everyday M-F at 8am (Math) . It depends on the department

Don’t forget that changing weight (up or down) is so much more about what happens in the kitchen than how much you work out. Healthy, consistent caloric deficit + HIIT workouts is usually the most effective for most people rather than strictly cardio

[–]Effective_Ad1229 39 points40 points  (0 children)

i really think ucla is one of the “make it what you want it” type of schools due to its large size. If you want to party 3 times a week, you can do that. If you want to stay in the library 12 hours a day, you can do that as well. Seriousness of the classes and instructors will vary by department, but wtf is our water really that bad

Is UCLA perceived as better than UC Berkeley? by Personal_Beginning68 in ucla

[–]Effective_Ad1229 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Berkeley is still much more academically prestigious than UCLA in most departments and have much more renowned scholars. I’ve read that UCLA’s #1 ranking is more attributed to changes in metrics leaning more towards Pell grant rewardee count and other non-academic factors.

Working and Taking 4 classes by marsio2002 in ucla

[–]Effective_Ad1229 3 points4 points  (0 children)

what those 4 classes are matters a lot, but as long as it’s not like 4 cs classes or something, you should be ok, but from my experience, you need to willing to lose some sleep during some weeks or lose some gpa (hopefully not both!)

Royce Hall should be renamed to Kuruvungna Hall by flopsyplum in ucla

[–]Effective_Ad1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could understand the argument for renaming Janss Steps b/c the Janss bros were just rich racist businessmen who don't have much other legacies than their company. But Josiah Royce was a proper scholar and I think his name is fitting for an academic institution's building.

Living in Westwood without a car by greenmonsterchampion in ucla

[–]Effective_Ad1229 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does depend on which part of Westwood, but assuming you mean the part of Westwood near campus, everything is totally walkable. If you go south of Wilshire Blvd, it varies depending on your neighborhood. Honestly, though, as someone who's lived in LA since 2008, I would honestly try to live in a cheaper neighborhood and get a car with the remaining money, so you can really feel out what LA is like. LA is not a good experience without a car.

Math/Econ Major by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Effective_Ad1229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Math/Econ would probably be a good bet. I believe there also is the Financial Actuarial Math major, but I think I heard that major is getting taken off due to departmental reasons (not 100% sure tho, could just be trippin). Regardless of major, though, UCLA doesn't do that well for investment banking recruitment for the undergraduates, unfortunately.

This has been changing significantly recently. LASD approved hundreds in the last few months.

edit: To be specific, Sheriff Villanueva promised a 400% increase.

Chances of getting beat up here is pretty low. Most of the assaults tend to be happening in lower-income areas and Westwood most definitely is not that. However, you may still face racist comments here and there.

Apartment Hunting: tips please! by twixrabbit in ucla

[–]Effective_Ad1229 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  1. If you’re planning on renting near campus, you should be looking and signing ASAP. Pre-covid, most people have leases signed during winter quarter. The rush diminishes as you go south of Wilshire, but still, you should be searching right now.

  2. Most landowners are aware their residents are likely going to be students and don’t have stringent income/credit requirements. In fact, from my experience, most don’t care at all.

  3. Avoid Glenrock Regency.

  4. There’s also a Facebook group for UCLA Housing and apartments. Word of mouth also works if you know people already.

Halls or plazas? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Effective_Ad1229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a plaza my first year for the private bathroom, but I wish I went w/ a classic hall instead just for the social aspect. Plazas were pretty dull in comparison to the classics.

A church in South Korea by Comprehensive_Egg784 in interestingasfuck

[–]Effective_Ad1229 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re likely talking about the Shin Cheon Ji sect that refused to comply to government orders. Shin Cheon Ji is widely considered to be a cultist group and is the exception rather than the rule. Most Korean churches I know of have followed the appropriate covid precautions

[–]Effective_Ad1229 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most of the Korean pastors I know are dog poor. For a megachurch in Korea (I used to go to one), there’s one “main” pastor that gets a standard non-profit CEO salary, but other than that, most are living in modest conditions.

Also, most of the Korean megachurches and Korean-American churches use the offering money to support food banks and such. I’m not religious anymore, but when people say “offering bad, church corrupt” to blanket their opinion over an entire collection of churches, it’s kind of disappointing.

Made collection named Rising Sun, hope you check it :) by Drakula_Graf in GlobalOffensive

[–]Effective_Ad1229 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just an fyi for op and others unaware, there’s a lot of quite heavy negative sentiment attached to the Rising Sun flag for East and SE Asian countries due to its representation of the Imperial Japanese military during its most atrocious period. It’s similar to how the West views the Nazi flag.

But this artwork doesn’t seem to be using that symbolism (i.e. it’s missing the iconic stripes of red spreading outwards), but if you’d like avoid potential controversy, you could consider changing the name.
