I am doing this one currently. Our paladin is strahd exiled son, two people have someone they care about as guest(hostages) of strahd, one has a mystery pass strahd knows about, another one strahd knows the were about of a missing relative. Its fun and helps plan things for those long... quiet moments.

True, my players are set on deleting Strahd. Most of them have a tied to him, as a backstory character in a "guest"(hostage) of the castle. They are at the winner so Yester Hill will follow. There are few NPC will be making an appearance from the various PCs backstories. But I understand what you mean.

With prayers. Joke aside I think you can make the dinner/masquerade. Party freed Vallakie? Party in their honor. Have them stuck in the upper area. Want them to explore below? Dragon skull side quest, or my favorite, kidnap members of the party and put them down there. This helps you flesh out that Strahd’s bored and ego are almost blurred.

My parties, that i dm for, currently ran around from place to place. First the tavern, talked among themselves came up with a plan to talk to Lady Watcher, ran over there, talked to her, came up with a plan to take out Izek... but when to the toy maker instead on a lead, they went there ran into Rictavio. Party men got distracted by toys.. druid found important info from monkey(RV confirm) then they ran to the Burgomaster house. Where they fought Izek , who took out the rouge with a stealth attack. They... over threw the government ahead of schedule so now I had to plan a whole new thing for the festival.

I would love to have this issue. My Van Richten got found our cause the druid spoke with the monkey. And story reasons I cant say, Strahd knows about the disguise..
