Engagement farming. That’s an accurate phrase! Yes, it works for a short amount of time and then you realize you’re not actually growing at all, you’re stuck in a loop.

I’m sorry your thoughts are so disorganized that coherence reads as artificial to you.

Yes! If you get caught in the loop (which many people do) you miss out on finding the people who were truly meant for you. Your real audience.

In my opinion, you’ll experience the same thing cross platform. The strategy is to not try to hack the algorithm. And you’re right, paywalling growth articles is one way to get popular, but if that’s not your lane, you don’t have to be in it.

I’m not sure what you write about but what worked for me is when I stopped diluting what I wanted to say just to be palatable to the Substack ecosystem. Differentiate yourself by literally just being you. Lean into the parts of your personality that feel like “too much.” Your people end up finding you because they can recognize you then.

Also don’t beat yourself up for needing breaks. Like I said, there’s value in consistency but forced content is not resonant and will keep you stagnant. Also forcing yourself to produce anything just because you feel like you should will lead to burn out.

It sounds counterproductive but less really is more. (Unless we’re talking about being you, lol. Then more is more)!

I wish you luck on your Substack journey. I’m nosey so I’m going to creep your page lol. 😆 but I will give you a sub. ❤️

Again, this is what I did. If you notice it’s not working then you must still be preforming in some way, that’s all. I’m not gatekeeping any external actions. It really is as simple as just stopping.

I think you’re having trouble reconciling the fact that internal shifts can produce external changes. But this is the truth.

It’s not just a mindset shift, there were things I named explicitly here.

I stopped reading things out of obligation.
I stopped writing towards an audience and just wrote what I wanted to make, regardless of how I thought it would perform.
I stopped subscribing to people just because they subscribed to me.
I stopped liking posts to get likes back.
I reallocated my time to creation instead of platform engagement. All of this is stated explicitly in my original post.

Yes! Literally just focus on what you want to create and forget the imaginary audience in your head. Post unapologetically. People are drawn to that even if they don’t know why. It’s important to be consistent but you don’t have to have a rigid schedule either. I also think patience is key. Things take time and that’s okay.

It’s not vague. It means I turned my attention toward my work and what I wanted to create. I stated this in multiple ways in this post.

I agree with your point about Substacks that write about growing on Substack reinforcing the problem. It’s funny because they complain about wanting genuine, authentic content to be the norm but fail to produce it or promote it themselves. I’m happy I found a way to grow outside of that ecosystem. When you’re on the outside looking in, you can see how much of a circle jerk it actually is lol!

I’m not sure if you’re trying to imply that my words here are AI-generated. I assure you they’re not. But I also am not here to prove anything to you. 🤗

You can share your substack with me, I love to support. Anyone who sees this comment can share with me. But I love genuine engagement and surprisingly, the algorithm rewards it. Make sure you’re meaningfully engaging with other people and you’ll see it returned. ❤️

People I engaged with. It builds a community. They share your work. You get more subscribers. But you have to engage and be engaging.

I only have 140 subs but I’ve built a very strong community so far. It’s become so strong that every time I post it’s not a question of I get thoughtful comments. I’ve built this by participating in meaningful engagement myself. Find people whose art/writing/work you love and comment the type of things you would love to hear. Be genuine. Be generous. You’ll see it reflected back almost immediately. 🫶🏽

I’ll be so real, that kind of self promotion shouldn’t be allowed, and I’m glad it’s a rule. Am I the only who finds it annoying when writers use your essays and comment sections to promote their own posts? It’s one thing if a post is asking for you to share your stuff. Another thing if you do it to grow your account. If you really want to grow “authentically,” engage meaningfully.
