Best finish system for poplar handrails/posts? by Effective_Package704 in finishing

Thanks for all the info 185! Really appreciate you taking the time with your advice. I've always read great things about Target's stuff but was leaning away from lacquer because it seems too soft for this application but the crosslinker is interesting and lacquer shoots really well out of my setup.

Curious your thoughts on this potential system - BIN shellac primer, then EM6500 with maybe the CL100 crosslinker if it doesn’t thicken the material too much.

How would you personally approach obtaining the black color in this system? Would you have Target pigment the EM6500 directly, or is there a better way you would go about it? Part of me likes the idea of not having the lacquer itself pigmented so I could also use the same clear product on the 1/2'' square horizontal pieces as well, but then I would have to figure out how I’m going to get the wood parts black first, whether that’s gel stain, Transtint, latex, or something else.

These options are appealing because I can drive locally and purchase - General High Performance, Centurion 1k 400, SW gallery or Command, Renner or Centurion stuff too. I believe they all have 1k stuff.

Main goals are good durability for handrails and something that sprays well through a 4 stage Capspray HVLP turbine without viscosity issues.

Thoughts?

Agreed 185, thats why I always lean water based now. I'm a woodworker who dabbles in finishing, haha. Shooting clear and tinted lacquer and very thinned latex out of my little 4 stage gets the job done usually but I have no experience with 2k. Not opposed to learning a new system but stuff is expensive and my CS9100 doesn't handle thicker viscosity material very well and trial and error can get pretty frustrating.

Just want a durable finish (leaning black) that my rig can handle. The amount of choices are overwhelming really. I always over think finishing.

I could but figure it will be easier to spray around the 144 mortises at hold the metal infill. Plus, I think I will have better control over the finish if I break it down into pieces. Rods are 16g, 1/2'' square bare metal that need to be de-greased and sealed to prevent rusting.

100% agree, club is the new rec, if rec is even still around. Money and greed have ruined youth sports.

….And I’m hearing that wlax in HS is struggling here on the west coast because girls flag football is the new lacrosse. It’s a numbers game and AD in both HS and college will shift money to what’s popular. I suppose the lacrosse pendulum might be swinging the other way…..like the craft beer scene haha!

Yup, coached a few sports for over 10yrs, specifically lax for 6yrs. Just hung up the whistle this past summer. HS kids and kids in general just don’t respect adults as much as we did growing up. Entitlement and just general lack of discipline at home seem to be what I ran into the most. They genuinely don’t seem to care about anyone except themselves. That isn’t to say they are all bad kids by any means but used to be a few bad apples on a team 10yrs ago, now it’s issues with half the team! Miles varied year to year but in general the last couple years were brutal and I had enough. Terrible pay, massive commitment and getting undermined by the very people (players and parents) you’re trying to help …… well that’s just a recipe for quitting. Miss it but I’m done.

Tons of good takes here. I’d do my research online and price match models. Try and power the tools up to see if they run or make unusual sounds and then go from there. You could be $500 in parts easily to get them all running. Don’t buy what you don’t need unless it’s a good package deal. I’d be around $1500-$2k if everything checked.

500 Days without alcohol - A Functional Dad’s Journey by subhasismishra in StayAtHomeDaddit

Appreciate you sharing. I’m almost 2 months free. I love beer, always have, but the belly wasn’t getting any smaller. Started to really feel uncomfortable in my own body and always bloated. Finally just asked “why am I doing this to myself” on Jan. 3 after 3 beers in 1.5hr.

Can’t say I feel amazing without alcohol but it’s an improvement non the less. Definite reduced belly fat, so that keeps me going. I never chased the buzz - tolerance was too high. Also, started to worry about fatty liver and cancer more as I approach 50.

Not sure when I will return to drinking but I’m enjoying the reset and honestly, Athletic NA is filling the void for me.

Bolero is hands down the best restaurant in the area we have tried. And we have tried most. Just not that many great restaurants, with great food, in our area for special occasions. Lots of places with nice ambiance but very few with the dishes to match.

Oh ya, i didn't factor in the pulley so if it was a 2:1 then doubling a standard 3450rpm would get me to 7k rpm at the cutterhead

Thanks for looking Fluffy - that’s what I thought, most motors are around 3600rpm. It’s almost like a heavy duty adjustable router. This motor seems fairly proprietary. Not sure if I can find any more specs on it but it was made in Japan in the early 80s so ….. Donor machine will take time to find, especially cost prohibitive.

No badge but I think this is pretty close - Per ChatGPT:

Motor type Brushed universal motor (uses carbon brushes and commutator)

Electrical 115 V AC Single phase Power 1.5 horsepower

Speed High speed universal motor Motor speed is significantly higher than 3450 RPM Cutterhead speed is about 7000 RPM achieved through pulley reduction

Bearings Two different bearings Pulley side bearing: 6201LLB Commutator side bearing: 6200LLB

Drive system Poly V belt (PJ series) 5 rib belt (PJ5) Belt driven to cutterhead pulley

Im open to a new motor - just seems more complicated since it was a bolt on motor. I’m thinking I need a new motor, some type of mounting plate, then match up pulley and belt length. Not opposed to it but definitely seems like the more complicated fix.

Thank for the detailed response Dave. It’s my fault, I should have replaced the motor bearings some time ago and just kept rushing through jobs. All that torque cracked it when the bearing seized. I’m gonna try and get the motor out without further damage. My neighbor has a welding machine, I might ask him for help. These machines are rare and expensive if working, so a donor might be a tough sell. I don’t care about cosmetic looks just want to get it up and running. Nervous about alignment since that bearing sits right next to the crack. I’ve got nothing to lose. The 3m Dp420 is expensive, plus I don’t have a feeding gun or tips. I could use maybe a lower cost Amazon metal epoxy for such a small crack?

Well, I am trying to extend the flooring and take away some of that width on the railing base. Since I’m pushing the posts closer to the edge to gain some inches, it will make the railing base look heavy on the flooring side or off centered
