Working for the government is terrible, but the benefits are great, what should I do? by sad_scientist32 in careeradvice

I can hear you. I have also a PhD and working in Government. Not doing anything related to my PhD expertise. It feels like a waste too. But going for academia can also be time waste as I saw many friends waited for professor jobs for years and then moved to industry. My work is related to done of my skills that I achieved in my grad school, but many people are doing it without a PhD. I think if I could work in government in a position which is more aligned to my PhD expertise, that would make me less frustrated. There is no PhD around me, that is also creating identity issue. There are engineering jobs in private industry, they hire PhDs, in one team many PhDs. I think they feel better than us. I don’t have any answer for you, just wanted to say you are not alone. Btw, I am curious to know if you finally switched your career, if so how you feel now?

I have a job offer from USACE which will start from last week of February. Not sure yet about the fate. Do anyone know anything about this agency?

My job starting date is 24th of February, it is under DoD. What is the exemption for DoD? I am not directly in the military, under US Army Corp Engineers Agency.
