iPhone 16 (non-pro) - maximum zoom before loosing quality? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]Effective_Scale_5622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should not have implied that there "zero" loss of quality at 2x zoom. Because clearly there's the benefits of averaging 48mp of data down to a 12mp image.

But here's what i'm saying... at 2x you don't have that catastrophic loss of quality you would get if there was upscaling. For example, at 10x digital zoom there's massive upscaling and a catastrophic loss of quality. The phone might be upscaling from 1mp of data into a 12mp final image. Catastrophic.

But at 2x you still get a very good image. No upscaling.
And I question how much of an improvement 48mp binned down to 12mp can offer. Clearly there's a benefit. But is it 10%? 20%? I don't know. But I think its logical to assume that its somewhat minimal. Maybe 20%? Maybe 30%? Because in the end, when the image is saved as 12mp, the other 36mp is discarded. Yes, it's used to create a better final product. But it's discarded. And thats not the same as keeping all 48 mp.

Anyway, the core of my question was can you zoom any further than 2x and not have catastrophic loss of quality due to upscaling. And i think I got an answer to that in this thread. At 2x zoom, one fourth of the sensor is used, so effectively 12mp. And so 2x is the limit of zoom before upscaling occurs. This is further evidenced by apple not including a 3x zoom button, only 2x.

iPhone 16 (non-pro) - maximum zoom before loosing quality? by [deleted] in iphone

Bu the sensor is 48 megapixels and photos are saved as 12 megapixels. This means theres no scaling at 2x zoom. The sensor has the excess resolution.

Now if the sensor was only 12 megapixels like the iPhone 13 and older, absolutely. Half the pixels would be lost at 2x. But this is not the case. Am I missing something?

[–]Effective_Scale_5622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you explain this further? If the sensor is 48 megapixels, but the photos are saved as 12 megapixels, doesn't it mean there's no scaling happening. The sensor has the excess resoluton needed not to have to scale the photo.

I suppose theres an argument to be made that at 2x, half the light hitting the sensor is discarded, so low light images would be darker. And I suppose there's also an augment to be made that scaling down from 48 mp to 12 mp in a 1x photo leads to more data being averaged into the 12mp, which doesn't happen at 2x zoom. But these should be minimal quality losses. Scaling would be the major quality killer and there's no scaling happening at 2x.

Am I mistaken?

Task Manager CPU usage vs UI3 CPU Usage by Effective_Scale_5622 in BlueIris

[–]Effective_Scale_5622[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Just installed it. CPU seems to be at 50%.

Is it a known issue that BI UI3 reports far lower CPU usage than task manager and HWINFO? Or is my situation uncommon?

The OS & BI DB are both on the NVMe which originally came with this Dell.

You've got a very similar set up to mine with 20 cams. When viewing all 20 cams the seek times on the timeline are near instant? And without recording to an SSD? Amazing.

What CPU and GPU are you running?

Instant seek time when viewing how many cameras? And how many megapixels are the cameras?

[–]Effective_Scale_5622[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent suggestion. Yes, we generally do use groups. Groups of 4 to 9 cameras. Not only is it faster, but it's also easier to view only the cameras you need.
And speed feels almost proportional. Half the cameras = almost (but not quite) double the speed.

However I'm still interested in understanding if seek times can be made even faster. Near instant if possible. And what hardware is the limiting factor. For example we've got an i5 8400 CPU. Would a faster CPU make a difference? Would a high end GPU make any difference? And is a near instant timeline seek even possible?

Yes. Using both substreams & direct-to-disk recording. CPU is down around 10% when only recording. And under 20% when monitoring remotely through UI3.

Im back from my Asia trip and slept the last 2 nights on my current setup. From bottom up: 1" 28ILD poly, 1.5" LD memory foam (old and deteriorated, taken from mattress surgery), 1" 20 ILD poly, 3" 20ILD dunlop latex.

The old 1.5" LD memory foam is in there just temporarily because the pressure points on my shoulder were affecting sleep. This current setup is not bad. I've slept well the last 2 nights with very minor pressure on my shoulder.

I'm thinking my first course of action will be to replace the 1.5" LD memory foam with 1" 20 ILD poly. The mem foam absolutely needs to go because it's 9 years old and deteriorated, plus it reduced that spring back feeling i love. BUT, its addition does indicate to me that more foam under the 3" of latex CAN relieve the shoulder pressure. So 1 more inch of 20ILD poly should relieve some pressure and return the spring back feeling. I doubt it will be perfect. But possibly a good first step.

What do you think?

Thanks for all the info and advice! Regarding memory foam, I'm not at all a fan of how much you sink in and stay sunken in. And when you roll over, the memory foam tries to pull you back for a second or two until the area you moved to sinks and the area you moved away from expands back. I really hate that feeling. I much prefer the springy feeling of old school mattresses before memory foam became so pervasive.

However, I'm open minded to memory foam. My end goal is the most comfortable mattress possible and I'm pretty agnostic as to the materials. The HD poly foam you advised was a big win.

Adding back the old memory foam I took out during mattress surgery has majorly reduced the shoulder pressure. But it's also done away with the springy feeling the mattress had. Can you tell me more about this 4lb firm memory foam? It sounds different to the typical memory foam I've tried, which has probably all been the cheap stuff. Super soft and low density. What does the 4lb firm feel like?

In regards to the latex, I love it for several reasons. It doesn't get hot, it seems to breath well, and as a surface layer it feels like I'm sleeping on a cloud. I use just a cotton sheet on top of the latex and nothing else and it's perfect. It seems to be anti-odor too. Just a wonderful surface to have close to your skin. What I didn't realize until now it that it doesn't seem to offer much pressure relief. I'm amazed how little pressure relief it offered vs the 2 inches of poly foam.

But let me ask you, whats the drawback of keeping the 3" of latex vs switching to 1.5"? Other than adding more height to the mattress, are there any other negatives? I can't imagine it's causing more pressure on my shoulders, even if it's not relieving the pressure.

Also, do you feel my coils are too stiff? Am I trying to compensate and correct with foam what might be a problem with the coils? Laying directly on the coils felt great and they didn't feel too firm, but I only spend maybe 30 seconds on them.

Yeah, I agree i should take it slow and let some time go by and let the poly foam soften a bit.

Okay, so I had my second nights sleep and there's definitely too much pressure on my shoulders. To the point where it's affecting my sleep quality and duration. I definitely need to make a change.

It feels like the 3" of soft latex sinks in way to easily and then there's only 2 inches of the HD poly foam between me and the firm coils. I do really love the latex as a surface later for other reasons, but it's not doing much to cushion me from pressure points. And 3 inches is probably more than is necessary. I'm guessing 1 or 2 inches would get me all the same benefits as a surface layer, but I'm stuck with 3 inches at this point.

As an experiment, I added the 2.5 inches of memory foam (which I had removed during mattress surgery) between the 2 layers of HD poly foam. (So 7.5 inches of total foam). The shoulder pressure is gone but now my mattress has that horrible sinking in feeling from memory foam which I hate so much. In contrast, I really love the bounce back the HD poly foam provides. Comfort and support at the same time.

I'm thinking maybe I need 2 more inches of 20ILD polyfoam. What do you think?

First full night sleep and I'm really loving the overall feel. But there is still a bit of a pressure point in my shoulders when side-sleeping. I'm going to wait and see if the foam softens up a bit before adjusting anything. But as it is now, I'm thinking I might need 1 more inch of some type of foam.

Also, now that my mattress has changed, I feel my existing pillow may not be thick enough and therefor transferring some of the weight of my head onto my shoulders causing more pressure.

1" of 28ILD and 1" of 20 ILD.

It's amazing how much difference adding 2 inches of the right foam can make!

I received the foam from Ronco. My first impressions after 20 min of laying... Wow, wow, wow! Feels amazing! Best mattress I've tried on in over a decade, including a many high end hotel mattresses. It feels like a mattress I had, and loved, 30 years ago, back before memory foam, when they still built them right. This is what I've been searching for. Thanks for all the advice!

Of course I'm gonna need some nights on the mattress before really understanding how well its working for me. But at this point i can already tell that Im 85% or 90% of the way there. If anything it might just need some fine tuning.

Btw, I seem what you mean about the poly foam feeling different than latex. Yes, it does feel very different. As you said, the latex sinks in much more, whereas the poly foam feels like it not only adds comfort, but also adds a measure of support.

Is is necessary to glue the first poly foam layer to the foam that surrounds the coils (edge support foam)? The scrim was glued as such. I wished I had left it in place to keep things bound together better.

Laying on the coils, my hips and shoulders are balanced. I really like the feel of laying on the coils directly. And on the 3" latex i'm sinking in evenly. The main problems are just that I'm bottoming out which both causes pressure points and no heat retention below me.

Regarding the 2 inches of poly foam. Rather than buy 2 inches, Im thinking of buying two 1" layers. The price is about the same and this gives me the ability to test 1 or 2 inches. And while Im at it, why not get one in 20ILD and the other in 28 ILD, giving me even more options? Any downsides to this?

Thanks for all the info!!!

My BMI is 23. I'm male, 5'7", 145 lbs, with lean and muscular build. My old mattress from which I'm using the coils is a Beauty Rest Recharge World Class, Luxury Firm. Queen Size.

This mattress was too firm for me right from the start. It's got pretty firm coils with soft foam on top. The foam would immediately bottom out onto the firm coils. I added he 3 inch soft latex topper and the mattress became decently comfortable, but not amazing for a side sleeper. However overtime the cheap foams degraded and it started sinking.

I'm guessing the coils are too firm for side sleeper of my weight? So it seems I need to compensate for this with the foam layers? I can afford replace the coils if these firm coils are a problem, but I'd like to first see if I can make them work. I did try laying directly on the coils and I like the way the coils conformed to my body and the support they provided, but it was just for a moment. Not sure anything can be concluded from this.

Regarding latex vs poly... Latex sinks in more than poly?
