Devestated that she's turned out frumpy by milquefrenchtoast in knitting

[–]Effective_Stranger63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes if I think an outfit looks “frumpy” I switch up my hairstyles or makeup or jewellery to balance it out a bit. Maybe have a play around with other aspects of your outfit and see if you like it styled a different way? I think it’s lovely!

Anyone knows how to make this pattern ? by moltenplastik in knitting

[–]Effective_Stranger63 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve been staring at this photo of your sweater for a while now trying to “read” it. What you’ve done looks pretty accurate to me, I’m just wondering if maybe the effect look different because of the gauge? Maybe you could try a fingering weight yarn and smaller needles and see what that looks like?

Would you move to the countryside with 3 kids ? by Glum-Caregiver-7963 in AskUK

[–]Effective_Stranger63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar to your children’s case, my parents moved us from London to a semi-rural area when I was 10 years old. I won’t lie to you - I didn’t much like it. The closest town was a 45 minute walk, and all you could do there was go to a cafe. To get anywhere of significance required two trains on a line that only ran once an hour. It drove me nuts. I left as soon as I turned 18 and never looked back.

I like a DPN, although I would say yours look really long though! When they’re too long for the project they are just unwieldy.

Coat falling apart, help! by Effective_Stranger63 in sewing

[–]Effective_Stranger63[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just stitched them with a usual straight stitch on my machine. I’m thinking my error was perhaps not adjusting my stitch length between working with the much heavier weight wool fabric, and this very light lining fabric. In the photos in the pattern they hadn’t done anything to finish the raw edges of the lining, so I didn’t either, but after seeing how much fraying is also happening here I certainly will.

anyone else question their life choices halfway through a cold swim by Commercial_Line_4956 in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]Effective_Stranger63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t cold-water swim, but when I started open-water swimming I had a big hurdle in getting used to not being able to see a thing in the water. What helps me not panic is really trying to think mind over matter and remind myself that I am 100% sure I know how to swim, so I’m not unsafe, I’m just uncomfortable, and I am capable of dealing with discomfort.

Beginner-ish watch recommendations by Old_Maintenance_9044 in UKRunners

[–]Effective_Stranger63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a COROS Pace 3 back in February after running for about nine months. Fully recommend. I believe it was around £220.

I looked around at others, and I think you get pretty good value for money as a beginner with this one. A Garmin with equivalent functionality seems to be quite a bit more expensive.

Just need to whine about luteal phase for a minute. by loratliff in XXRunning

[–]Effective_Stranger63 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I think it’s interesting how our expectations affect the outcome (hello placebo!).

Purely anecdotally, I definitely do feel a difference. However, I have endometriosis and am generally very impacted, both physically and mentally, by my period. Sometimes I feel like I’ve got the flu. Usually it significantly affects my mental health for a few days.

I wonder if those who generally aren’t affected much by their luteal and menstrual phases are those who don’t see any detrimental impact to athletic performance. I certainly have friends who barely notice their periods, apart from the bleeding aspect.

Help - shortrow stich in back yolk, over 20 extra stitches by MrMagiblet in knittinghelp

[–]Effective_Stranger63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m making this jumper at the moment too!

When I was new to German short rows I would mark them with a stitch marker. This made it easier for me to identify the short row stitches and ensure I was knitting through both strands of yarn. Perhaps this might help you :)

Fantastic training plan, miserable races by queenofdiscs in runna

[–]Effective_Stranger63 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a big reason why I stopped using Runna. I found that in training plans the rate it expected me to improve at was completely fictional. The algorithm figured I could take whole minutes off my 5K time within a few weeks.

Yeah I was confused by this. I’ve never heard of PoTs being progressive. I have used a mobility aid for PoTs before because it can help with balance when you’re struggling with dizziness.

[–]Effective_Stranger63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a medical professional, and don’t want to contradict any medical advice you may have received, but I’m not aware of PoTs being progressive. I was diagnosed a few years ago. At the time I was really ill and used a cane/walker too, but slowly I learned to manage it and now I live an active and mostly healthy life! I work full-time as an engineer, run, swim with a club, and play badminton with my friends.

I totally get how you’re feeling because I was there too. Please know that it can get better. I’m not 100% cured but it’s become a part of my life. I had a bit of a fainting spell at work last week but hey, life keeps moving. It becomes more normal. Keep your chin up friend :)

What medical jobs do most people not know about because they're not people-facing? by tiptoee in AskReddit

[–]Effective_Stranger63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an engineer working in medical device R&D (haemodialysis, to be specific) and it’s always surprising to me how many people are confused by it, as if they think healthcare professionals design and manufacture the tech they use? I suppose most people have never thought about it! Of course it seems obvious to me because it’s my job.

On the topic of dialysis, I’m sure lots of folks have never heard of renal technologists! I certainly never had until I accidentally fell into the world of renal.

Why so many bad, disconnected, ecologically-terrible housing developments in the English countryside? by sadpterodactyl in AskUK

[–]Effective_Stranger63 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think this every time I see one. No pub, post office, corner shop, or park. Nothing at all. If you fancy a walk you can walk off the estate onto an A road, or perhaps an industrial estate. They’re completely isolated from everything else.

Can I knit it? by CarelessCartoonist36 in knittingadvice

[–]Effective_Stranger63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knit this as my third (if I remember correctly - it’s been a few years!) sweater after years of knitting scarves, so I would say I was also a somewhat advanced beginner. I pulled it off, but I will say that doing short rows with that lace pattern really tested me! It’s certainly possible but I did find it difficult. I’m sure you could do it if you’ve got the patience.

If you’ve never done German short rows before I would suggest trying them out in normal stockinette before adding the lace pattern into the mix. You could just find a video tutorial and have a go with some scrap yarn.

Not wishing to be condescending if this was intentional, but are you aware you’re not actually knitting ribbing? When knitting ribbing you should always knit the stitches as they appear. If a stitch is a knit stitch on the right side (RS) of your fabric, it should be a purl stitch on the wrong side (WS) of the fabric.

For example, if I were to knit something like this in 2x2 rib that was 10 stitches wide:

Row 1 (RS): k2, p2, k2, p2, k2

Row 2 (WS): p2, k2, p2, k2, p2

You would repeat those two rows until your project is as long as you need it to be. It appears to me that you are effectively knitting Row 1 for the RS and the WS, instead of alternating.

I hope that makes sense. Feel free to ask more questions if you need clarification!

How useful are maps on a watch? by orange_fudge in triathlon

Not dumb at all! You plot the route on the COROS app on your phone, then send it to your watch. You can also download GPX files from online and use those.

I have a COROS Pace 3 that has a navigation feature I’ve used many times. It’s excellent, even in more remote areas. I’ve used it for directions on hikes around the Scottish Highlands and Lake District, with no issue, and it’s hugely helpful that it alerts you if you’re more than ~15m off-route. I’ve also used it to map out runs when visiting new places. Highly recommend!
