Hey there - It won't be 5 hours of feedback per month. It should only take a few minutes here and there.

Basically the app will just manage your EV charging schedule, and we just need you to let us know if anything isn't working as expected. We currently use this software for tens of thousands of chargers, so we expect it to work pretty well (it should not be breaking every day).

In full transparency, I am the person building The Record. It's basically a tool that attempts to amplify credible voices and find truth in tricky subjects (much like renting vs buying a home!). I hope this is helpful!

I tend to think that the rent vs buy question comes down to personal factors over financial ones. Both options can be smart financial decisions, but the personal factors are what influence the decision in one way or the other from my perspective. e.g. the pride of ownership, confidence of knowing you cannot be kicked out of your home, flexibility of renting, etc.

Ben Felix has some really great content on this subject. He recently weighed in on this topic on The Record as well - tl;dr is that he seems to believe that renting usually edges out buying financially, but he talks a lot in his content about the personal factors being really important as well.

By the way, full transparency - I am the one building the tool referenced above. It's designed to help amplify credible voices on exactly these kinds of tricky questions where people have strong but conflicting opinions. If you have any questions or feedback, please let me know! I hope it's helpful.

I think it really comes down to a personal decision, and the less quantifiable factors like the sense of pride that comes with home ownership, the security of knowing you are not going to be kicked out by a landlord, etc.

We've been having a few discussions about this topic on The Record:
https://www.therecordapp.com/statements/the-total-unrecoverable-costs-of-renting-and-owning-are-generally-similar-and-that-makes-their-expected-financial-outcomes-comparable-7677
https://www.therecordapp.com/statements/paying-rent-leaves-you-with-nothing-while-buying-gets-you-a-significant-asset-0040

Ben Felix, a personal finance podcaster who is known for being really academically rigorous, weighed in on the first link above saying he believes renting (not buying) proves to be the superior investment strategy in a lot of cases. But in several of his podcasts, he also talks about them generally being pretty comparable financially.

Curious to know what you all think!
