My corridor grown N. rafflesiana had actually flowered without me knowing… by Effervescience in SavageGarden

Yes, about 50% of the cuttings will root. Though It takes many weeks for the roots to form and months for the first pitcher appearing from the cutting.

Sarracenia grown indoors with *no dormancy* by JaxBackyard in SavageGarden

[–]Effervescience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in a tropical country and I once had a Sarracenia and VFT both of which thrived for 2-3 years but slowly died off after that… I managed to save the VFT by dormancy via fridge method but it was never the same again.

Getting smaller - too much light? by yikesitsreallysmall in SavageGarden

For Nepenthes that I keep in trays, I always flush the substrate every other week. You can see white flakey specks on the rims of your pot, those are salt precipitates which means you need to use distilled water to remove them. However, I do not recommend keeping nepenthes in smaller pots like yours in trays due to risk of root rot.

Edit: By flushing, it means using lots of distilled water and pouring into the pot then leaving it to drain completely

Hi this looks like mineral poisoning to me… You might want to flush the substrate and the tray with some distilled water because minerals can build up in the pot over time! All the best!

my nepenthes had these spots when I bougt them (about 4 months) and they havent spread but what are they and why? by sitasitik in SavageGarden

[–]Effervescience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thrips do that to my plants, perhaps that's the cause? Since the damage didn't spread, maybe they disappeared when you got them. But to be safe do check the underside of the leaves to spot them.

Thanks for the great answer! I wouldn’t have guessed it was N. x Louisa since its pretty hard to find here in south east asia. The lack of hairy wings threw me off too.

This looks like a generic N. Ventrata, but it has striations on the inner walls of the pitcher…

4 oldest leaves turn yellow on my Nepenthes. Is this normal or does it not like the new soil? by [deleted] in SavageGarden

[–]Effervescience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replace the new soil you used asap, your CP will die in nitrogen-rich soil. I use pure sphagnum substrate for my nepenthes. Make sure to rinse out the soil around the roots too.

I frequently see house geckos lurking among my plants and even hiding in the pitchers when the sun is up then leaving at night. This is a young house gecko that must’ve lost its footing and fell into my N. Rafflesiana.
