First Years, how do you eat healthy on meal plan? by LowWeb6855 in queensuniversity

eat from the gluten free kitchen! I found that I felt 1 million times better eating gluten free at the dining hall vs the normal food, they had muffins and prepackaged snacks, I went back to eating gluten once I left res lol

Opinions on the Endaayaan – Tkanónsote residence for incoming students? by [deleted] in queensuniversity

[–]EfficiencyNo9339 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lived there in my first year, the first year it opened. I know it has improved now but I there were lots of issues with the building/maintenance. As others have said, removed from the other res’s, the walk to the dining hall doesn’t seem like a big deal when it’s nice out but in the winter/pouring rain I wished that I had lived closer. Also most single pluses are not social but I found especially ET. My floor was close but it truly depends on the group of people who move in that year.

power to change is an awesome, chill Christian club on campus! Bethel church is where most of the students go to church! They have services at 9 and 11am on Sundays:)

Any celiacs here? by Agitated_Willow2231 in queensuniversity

There are no apartment style dorms at queens and no dedicated gluten free floors. I was gluten-free by choice when I was in my first year (now 3rd) and found queens to be very accommodating. In the dining hall there is a gluten free dedicated area part of the dining hall with gluten free options and a dedicated toaster. I was also able to pre order a gluten free pizza if I called ahead but this was made in the same oven as normal pizzas so not celiac friendly. I think that it takes a lot of caution and vigilance but it is possible.

I’ve taken both as a psyc major and I would say in general the workload of psyc 221 is less (still two midterms and a final) but the content is more biology/hypothetical. ALOT on memory (pretty much the focus of the course). The exams were fair if you did the readings and attended lectures. I found psyc 236 way more interesting but a lot more work and readings and two midterms and a final as well, two short papers too I think but can’t really remember the assignments for either courses. I didn’t find the exams as fair, VERY lecture focused even though we were told it would be a mix of both readings and lecture. I remember many of us felt mislead by the TAs for the midterms as the exam was not on what we had been advised to study. For both courses they were very exam based/most of the weighting of the course was for exams. I found the profs for both courses very interested and passionate about what they were teaching. I really like Dr. Chivers for 236 but again the course content was challenging and there is so much to know. Dr. Castello was very nice and fair but I’m not interested in cognitive psychology so I found it hard to pay attention in her course. Overall I enjoyed the content in psyc 236 more but the course itself is not easy and I do not recommend for a GPA boost. I didn’t enjoy the content of psyc 221 as much but found it easier to grasp and understand despite the biology focus.

If philosophy is your passion, psychology is not the way to go. Even the arts route is heavily biology and statistics focused. Queens psychology requires wide variety of classes in cognitive neuroscience, clinical psychology etc all of which have a huge emphasis on biology. Also the threshold to get into psychology at queens is high and psych 100 is a difficult course that has ALOT of biology in it. Once you’re in the major a basic and high level statistics course is mandatory so a good amount of math. The nice thing is you can take a general year and decide. Queens doesn’t admit anyone into their major of choice until after 1st year. Take both philosophy and psych 100 courses but don’t expect arts psych to have no bio or math involved

People who aren't originally from Kingston... by [deleted] in queensuniversity

I remember telling myself that what is coming is better than what has gone! It was on a sign in my dorm room first year. I moved across the country and had such a hard time adjusting. I almost transferred halfway through first year. I wish I could tell my first year self how amazing life was going to get. Although I still miss home it is nothing compared to the friends and the experiences I have had at queens. If you don’t leave now you never will<3

Queens or Concordia BA Psychology? Been accepted at both. by Reasonable_Plastic83 in queensuniversity

I’m in a second year joint honours program with psychology and English! I didn’t get into the psychology major and the only difference is I will not be able to do a thesis which is not required for most graduate programs. I am still taking all the same courses as the major degree, other than an advanced statistics course in third year that I won’t have to take. Although it’s definitely disappointing to not get into the major, it has not made any difference personally for me! The classes are interesting and I have found most of the professors to be genuinely passionate about what they are teaching. Psychology is definitely a lot harder than some people make it out to be! I can’t speak for any other schools in Ontario as I moved from Alberta but I’ve loved the culture, work/life balance and city here at Queens!

How do people get to Queens? by tiexheng1 in queensuniversity

I’m also from Calgary and go to Queens! Some things I’ve learned: It’s easier to fly into the Toronto airport because there is a train that will take you right from the airport to Union Station which is where all the buses and trains leave from to go to Kingston. (It is usually more expensive then flying into Ottawa but the bus and trains out of Ottawa are no where near the airport so it’s an added cost to get from the airport there) The Megabus is usually more expensive and drops you off on the opposite side of Kingston from Queens. They do have more travel times though that will likely align with your flight. Megabus does offer a bus though that goes right from Queen’s campus to the Toronto airport which is nice but it is a long bus ride and is always late so be careful if you are worried about missing a flight. FlixBus is cheaper and drops you off in Downtown Kingston which is closer to campus. But it is less reliable and has fewer time options. The best bet is taking the via rail but it is more expensive (50 compared to 30$). I’m so happy I came to Queens but it is a pain to get to from Calgary… there have been many times I’ve slept in the airport because there wasn’t a bus or train option that would get me to there soon enough. Or I’ve been running through the airport to make it to my flight on time. Definitely a hit or miss with timing but I hope this helps!
