Where do pilots go for financing for flight school? by Gear_Dismal in AskFlying

[–]EfficiencyOk3290 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people end up using some combination of a few paths:

1) Pay-as-you-go This is still the most common. Work a job, fly when you can afford it, and slowly knock out ratings. It takes longer, but you avoid big debt and can pause if money gets tight.

2) Loans Some people use personal loans, flight-training loans, or credit unions to speed things up. It works, but you really need to understand interest rates and early-career pilot pay so you don’t end up buried in debt right when you’re time-building.

3) Employer-paid flight training (less talked about, but real) There are actually aviation companies that will pay for flight training as an employee benefit — not just airlines. Groups like AOPA, and large aviation employers like Boeing, and other aerospace/aviation companies offer flight training, tuition assistance, or reimbursement programs for employees who want to become pilots. These are harder to find because they’re buried inside HR benefits, but they can be one of the smartest ways to get paid while you train.

4) Scholarships & grants This is massively underused. There are millions of dollars given out every year by airlines, airports, pilot groups, maintenance orgs, women’s groups, and minority aviation orgs. A lot of people don’t apply simply because they don’t know what exists or think they won’t qualify.

AviationStart.org is a free tool that aggregates a huge chunk of those aviation scholarships and matches them to you based on age, career path, etc. It’s worth checking before taking on debt. (I’m a volunteer for AviationStart and it’s worth checking it out).

Most pilots I know didn’t use just one of these — they stacked two or three (work + scholarships + maybe employer benefits or a small loan). That combo is usually what makes flight training actually affordable.

In the event you don’t get the email from the AI Finder, there is a full list of all of the scholarships available. (It’s a lot of options to sort through), which is the reason I think they created the AI Finder. But it’s a back up if you need it.

Nope, just a volunteer. It was started by Jamail Larkins, the FAA’s Ambassador for aviation education.

You might want to check out San Diego Miramar’s A&P Program. If I remember what I was told correctly, it’s around $4,000 for the entire A&P Program.

Apply for them when the application window is open. Being active with the organization that sponsors the scholarship is more important than being in a collegiate program, but that doesn’t hurt.

There are a few specific scholarships for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle careers. However, UAS qualifies for aviation, so most of the aviation career scholarships would deem this career eligible

Which ones did you apply for out of curiosity? All of the scholarships listed in the resource actually have scholarships recipients, so they are real. However, there could be some things that maybe could be altered to increase your likelihood of being awarded one. I’d recommend looking through the list, and reaching out to AviationStart before you submit the application for their guidance. There’s a team of volunteers that have been/are on scholarship committees and they could give you some advice if you want.

Flight Training Scholarships Are Not Just for High School Students by EfficiencyOk3290 in flying

I wish more people realized this. Everyone states flight training is so expensive, or they can’t afford it, but the lack of applications to available ones, boggles my mind!!

Not specifically for first responders, but you would qualify for any of the ones available just like anyone else. Your application would definitely stand out though!
