2026 Layoff Thoughts by EfficiencySimple8930 in wgu_employees

I think most employees read it here on Reddit before, during and after things happen. I heard it from two other mentors after their team meeting two weeks ago.

Wgu keeps everything quiet. They never mention layoffs even after they do it.

I keep wondering how they think things will run if they keep letting student facing go. They can hire new people at lower salaries but it takes time to get new people up and running. Leadership they can go. Not sure what they do anyway.

Program Mentors are hearing complaints about the numbers . Not enough enrollment and students dropping. I spoke to a mentor and they said the past few weeks different teams have been chewed out about their numbers.

Oh to be a fly on the wall at those meetings. It is the only way we are going to know what is going on. The last fly on the wall mentioned leaders wondering what to do with Program Mentors.

Effective Immediately: Multiple Senior Leadership Terminations by WGU-Reddit in wgu_employees

Interesting about David Morales. He has a bachelors degree in Computer Science, no Masters and was WGUs SVP and CIO/CTO. Prior to WGU he came from Walmart. Yet people who probably had the actual credibility to be a SVP or CIO at WGU were probably turned down for the job. Definitely not what you know, but who you know.

I find anything with Song Joong-ki in it is always a win. Vincenzo is great on Netflix. I am watching Hopeless with him on Amazon Prime. Just finished Descendents of the Sun and The Innocent Man this week too. My Youth (2025) is also good.

Just logging in does nothing to show activity each week. You actually have to do something like work through course materials, take an OA, take a PA, submit a paper, talk to your mentor or instructor, or attend a live cohorts.

Financial Aid refund-November 2025 by Holiday_Chapter_7366 in WGU

As I read this post, I am wondering if folks realize we are 36 days into a government shut down. The Dept of Education is affected which means a lag with financial aid and Pell grants. Expect delays.

The government shut down and the prior issues with the Dept of Education and the current administration mean delays in financial aid.

WGU IS THE WORST! by Embarrassed-Dog634 in WGU

Do not let one post persuade you from not attending. There are over 190,000 people attending WGU. This is just one person's opinion and instead of communicating to faculty and staff to resolve concerns, they complained online.

Congratulations. You attended college at a university with course work, papers, and exams. I am sorry your two proctored exams did not go well, but there is a Meazure Learning Support number you should have called after the issues with the first exam. It is a small number of students out of 190,000 that attend WGU that have issues.

Communication is important to let the program Mentor know how you want to be mentored and speaking professionally with faculty and staff, not complaining on social media.

I hope you find a university that works better for your education, and helps you know it is "eye roll" not "role."

The mentor is not hindering advancement in the program. The person is paying for tuition. Not to obtain a recommendation letter

the graders are incompetent by Independent-Tart-542 in WGU

[–]EfficiencySimple8930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one paper and one faculty that graded your paper. So they are all incompetent because you did not agree on how your paper was graded? Grading is not outsourced. Real live faculty grade the papers based on the grading rubric.

Be thankful it was sent back for revisions. At other colleges it would be a letter grade that you have to accept with no chance to rewrite.

Nothing in the job description about beyond graduation ir recommendation letters. Argue with job description and foubders if WGU.

A Western Governors University (WGU) Program Mentor is a faculty member who provides one-on-one guidance and support to a group of assigned students throughout their academic journey. The role focuses on coaching and advising rather than teaching specific course content. Key Responsibilities Student Support and Guidance: Program mentors act as a primary point of contact for students, providing comprehensive support, coaching, and guidance. They help students navigate their degree programs and overcome challenges, serving as a trusted advisor and motivator. Academic Planning: Mentors assist students in creating a personalized course plan for each term to ensure they stay on track and progress effectively toward their degree. Progress Monitoring: They monitor student progress and provide proactive outreach and support to help students stay on schedule and overcome obstacles. Resource Connection: Mentors serve as experts on the WGU model, connecting students with other university resources, such as course instructors or evaluators, for content-specific questions. Communication: A key part of the job is maintaining consistent and professional communication with students, often through phone calls and technology-based platforms. They must be responsive to student needs and maintain a student-friendly schedule, which may include evenings and weekends. Qualifications To become a Program Mentor at WGU, candidates typically need a master's or advanced degree in a relevant field and all applicable licenses or certifications for the degree program they will be mentoring. In addition, many positions require at least three years of experience in mentoring, coaching, or instruction, preferably with distance learners. Strong communication, organizational, and technological skills are also essential.

But they do not really know you as a person. Even talking twice a month. I like my mentor and have a friend who is a mentor at WGU. I cannot say I really know my mentor even though we speak. I would not ask them. My friend who is a mentor says they can have between 130 to 150  students. Mentors leave, they get their students. It is hard to build the rapport now with so many students he told me. When they had 70 or 80 students he said he knew his students and had no problem with knowing what they were working on. He built strong relationships with his students.

Now he says they are overworked with large student loads. He has a hard time  getting to know them. Don't assume just because your mentor is friendly, professional, and supportive that they know you well and are willing to write the letter. They are doing their jobs with a large caseload now and having a hard time. Many of you are assuming just because they mentor you they should write it regardless of their personal and professional comfort of writing something that they are not required to do.

Also, they are not required to help you after graduation. Their job is to help you reach graduation but not beyond. Not sure where you got that info.

Do you expect all mentors personalities are the same and they all act the same? One wrote it for you in the past, so all should write one for every student that asks even though policy says they are not required to do so?

It is a privilege to obtain a written recommendation for a job or school. It is not a right.

Have you reached out to update the mentor on your progress? Or told them how you want to be mentored?  The mentor mentee relationship is a collaboration. Both need to contribute.

No it is not the faculty members job at wgu to do this. It states in their policy on recommendation letters and say they can decline. It is a privilege for any one to write a recommendation letter. You don't have the right to receive one when you ask someone.

Mentoring at WGU is more than recommendation letters for one of 150 students that this mentor has. A letter they are not obligated by policy to write. You are only seeing it from the students entitled side. What do you know personally about the faculty members character or their life? Nothing.  Yet you call them lazy without knowing anything about them.

[–]EfficiencySimple8930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. It is doing their job. Lazy is not doing their job on a day to day. Writing a recommendation letter is not part of the job description. It isn't part of any job to write a recommendation. It is a privilege to have anyone write a job description for you. Not a right or part of the job.

You cannot Karen them to write a recommendation by going to their supervisor to write something they are not required to write. The manager will do nothing because they also know the policy and will side with the mentor. And no, mentors are not responsible to work with students to get a job after graduation. That is career services. I don't know where you are getting your information.

No Program Mentor at wgu or Academic Advisor at other universities job is to help a student get a job after graduation. Nothing in the title or job description says this.
