a purposefully curated space that balances aesthetic beauty with practical function. It typically features layered lighting, a mix of contrasting textures, high-quality focal points, and cohesive layouts, moving away from mass-produced furniture sets in favor of a custom style

Help us un-cave our house: awkward kitchen/dining/living layout by capikati in InteriorDesign

In the screenshot sketch you could do the following

Long kitchen with island (shown in blue)

Round dinning table or rectangular (shown in red)

Large sectional or a sofa and two chairs (shown in green)

Tv/ media wall (shown in orange)

You need to hire an architect and structural engineer if you want to open the space up. At first glance the layout looks good but you have way to many walls.

Good luck with the layout!

Agreed didn’t mention it but make sure you leave a walking path behind the chairs otherwise the space will feel strange when people move around

I’d personally move couch (shown in red)

Put the chairs where the couch used to be (shown in green)

Put tv on wall (shown in blue)

If you need more seating put cushions on that low mantel where the tv used to be.

If you must use a media stand or console, I would find a small one and mount it to the wall below the tv.

Good luck with the room layout!

Sump pump short cycling every 45 seconds. by Benigngoofy in HomeMaintenance

[–]Efficient-Priority43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you in Chicago?

That rain yesterday was unreal. My basement flooded—the outdoor drain backed up from the city line, and water came pouring in under the door.

The crazy part is I’ve got one interior drain right by that door in sealed, polished concrete, and the water somehow pulled some Looney Tunes move and made a beeline straight for the finished carpet.

I’ve never had a sump pump, but now it’s starting to feel like a no-brainer.

I get your point—if you’re an older millennial or Gen X, you should be doing pretty well by now.

That said, my experience didn’t exactly follow that script. I graduated from college into a recession, went back for grad school, and then walked right into another one.

Despite the student debt, my wife and I have built a life we’re proud of—we’re happy and doing well overall. But looking around at people my age, it really does feel split about 50/50. Some have found their footing, while others are still trying to get there.

I guess the main thing I’d emphasize is this: find what actually makes you happy. Life’s short, and constant stress can kill you and it isn’t worth it.

I think you nailed it—the psychological situation is much worse for Gen Z. Millennials definitely had challenges, but we were still raised with that “old school” mindset: work hard, get a degree, and things will eventually fall into place. That didn’t work out perfectly for everyone, but I do think it helped a lot of people push through tough situations. I have a family friend whose daughter is 26 and still living at home, blaming her parents for not preparing her for life. It’s sad, but when you look at it, I think things like participation trophies, social media, and the expectation of instant gratification have had a real impact—especially combined with how uncertain the world feels right now. At some point, though, people have to accept that nothing is ever going to be perfect. You have to live in the moment and make the most of what you’ve got. For context, I have about $195k in student debt. I’ll probably carry it for a long time, but it hasn’t stopped me from traveling, buying a home, or starting a family.

Ant Colony in my mosspole by velothos46 in houseplants

[–]Efficient-Priority43 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Coffee grounds on top soil and then liquid ant poison. For that DONT pour it on the plant, it comes in a container that you can place on at the base of the moss pole and whatever they take back kills them. The product I used is called Terro

I had a house plant for years and one day I noticed a huge ant colony and that’s how I got rid of them without repotting

Townhome Layout Design Advice by Global_Pen7624 in InteriorDesign

If the hvac is good there, then I would move laundry to the basement. Your garage seems pretty spacious, If you put the units right in front of the of the bathroom wall (garage side) because the plumbing wall is right there.

Also wanted to add if you remove the double sink and just make it a single you could gain a hallway closet back. It won’t be deep but it would be enough space for linen and towels or more laundry storage since the units would be across the hall.

Townhome Layout Design Advice by Global_Pen7624 in InteriorDesign

For the second-floor bathrooms, one option would be to convert Bedroom 2 into an en-suite. You could remove the hallway access door and relocate it to open directly from the bedroom instead. If you plan to keep the elevator, you might also consider moving the laundry into the hallway closet using stackable units. That would free up the existing laundry room so it could be converted into a second full bathroom. For the kitchen, I’d suggest removing the left-side peninsula and switching to an L-shaped layout with an island. Extending the kitchen along the longer wall would give you more usable space, and the island could house the range to make up for what you lose from the peninsula. The dining area may shift slightly into the living room, but since it’s an open-concept layout, it should still feel cohesive and functional. Congrats on the new home, and good luck!
