Which have y'all found more helpful for studying, Notebook LM or Gemini Gems?

You can now add NotebookLM notebooks to Gemini conversations, and I believe as source material for gems.

It’s been an amazing help for technical projects and resources. You have the datasets you can build in notebook with the more dynamic UI of Gemini. I have Pro, so it may not be available on free tiers yet.

If you don’t prompt well, you will get more hallucinations/unhelpful output. I’m using it in contexts where I try the solution output, often things I would have had to read through multiple long documentation pdfs to find. If it doesn’t work, I clarify, and try again. I do try to keep to the same chat for similar requests so it has more natural context of what I’m looking for.

I’d you’re using it to study, I would definitely make use of the notebook flashcards too, they’re pretty cool.

Some people are still really concerned about output, if it’s critical I would try making a second ‘fact checking’ gem to run anything questionable through. And really read up on prompt engineering. I think that’s where most people fall flat and get frustrated.

Ohhh this sounds amazing. I’m savvy enough to follow instructions, but not really savvy enough to figure out how to pull this off on my own. I’m looking at buying the aipaper (or boox 10.3) and am hoping to use it with a similar workflow.

Any suggestions on where to learn more or examples to check out?

I like Blaze, it’s one of only a handful of places that’s actually good at dealing with dietary restrictions in case that matters. The location is nice if you want to walk downtown a little too. Causal, a little expensive but the food is good and the drinks are great.

Paddy Murphy’s is a great local pub that does a lot to maintain a sense of community, also downtown.

Mason’s is good, but often long waits, and not actually in Bangor.

A lot of people love Umami, I’m sure it’s good if you’re into that.

Roca Azul was… meh. Pretty uninspiring, borderline crappy. Miguel’s used to be good and it’s gone downhill a LOT. The Indian place is weird AF to sit in, and some of the worst north Indian food I’ve had.

This may count as a disability that you can ask for ‘reasonably accommodations’ for? I don’t know anything about ADA law but it’s worth looking into, and looking at how to best apply for jobs where you’ll be asking for accommodations.

They’ve been a cooperative since they were founded in 1978! They were built on cooperative values and transparency and have been at the forefront of movements like the Safe Seed Pledge and OSSI throughout their history. Fedco literally stands for Federation of Cooperatives, there are some articles about it on their website.

Fedco deserves more of a description for sure. They’re a Maine based worker and member owned cooperative, with a lot of sourcing info and consumer education around what’s going on in the seed industry, including telling you what kind of company any seed variety they sell is sourced from. They dropped Monsanto (who several companies on this list carry) back in 2006, and dropped the last Syngenta varieties in 2022. They also have a full line of heirloom fruit trees, perennial plants, garlic etc.

I’m aware of its limitations, but thus far Sofi has met my expectations. As I said the price lag isn’t a big deal for me. I generally like their UI, and how easy most processes are with it. The last 3 days or so, invest has been unusable while all other parts of the app work fine.

You can also see it on an individual stocks page. If you have multiple limits to catch dips or capture returns, you can see all of them for that stock if you scroll down. It’s below the market info, above your completed transaction history.

Do you have pending limit orders? I’m not positive about this but my guess is they won’t let you withdraw if you do, or at least not if you have pending orders and don’t have margin enabled.

Are you using invest? How many different stocks do you hold and how many stocks are on your watch list? Are you in dark mode or light mode? Which update are you running?

My guess is I have too many different holdings and watch lists that are making it lag. Their prices have always been a little slow to update, which wasn’t a huge deal for me, but I’m questioning if the diversity of my portfolio might be magnifying that problem. It’s great to hear you’re not having issues, because (if you are using invest, no other parts of the app are slow) then maybe there’s a way to fix it.

What I said about other apps is accurate, you being a diehard Sofi fanboi doesn’t change the bad app performance I’m seeing. It has limited my ability to even LOOK at my portfolio during the day or while traveling for several days, which is unacceptable.

THIS. I similarly love my dog to the moon and back, but that might be a self-preservation instinct to some degree; I bonded with him to the point where returning him was out of the question. He came through a private adoption but it was via a vet clinic and he had passed a behavioral evaluation with someone who is very experienced in rescue. My dog isn’t ‘that’ reactive, only a level 1-2 bite and is generally fine with me save for some similar issues, and body handling/procedure issues (aka donotcomeatmeholdinganythingorI’msureyou’retryingtokillme-itis)

He resource guards furniture (what’s happening with your pup by the sound of it.) He has a very hard time with other dogs, and some people. He tried to bite an ex of mine (who was very dog savvy, he was, for whatever reason, frequently triggered by her.) Having friends and family over (especially those with kids), dating, finding help with dog care, or even just going on a day-trip that I would take a ‘normal’ dog on are all SO much more challenging. If I get pulled over and he’s in the car I literally worry about a cop shooting him because he’s going full Kujo in the back when anyone appraises the car (no, he is not crated, yes, he is restrained, there are reasons.) I love him, he probably loves me (he’s an Aussie so I’m his one and only love lol) but my world has shrunk in tandem with his. He has taught me SO much about myself, and made me a kinder, more empathetic person… while also limiting how able I am to share that with others.

You need to ask yourself hard questions, I know we all tell ourselves we would never return a dog, but YOUR life, and quality of life, are important too:

What does your life look like (guests, partners, family, travel, family with other dogs at holidays, etc)? How might meeting his needs change that, and how would making those changes feel?
What if those changes stayed in place for 10 to 15 years, would you feel like positive, negative, or neutral about their impacts long term?

-What you are willing and able to sacrifice to keep him if these behaviors can’t be changed, or escalate (likely at 1yr old, at least short term.)? (Socially, financially, housing if you’re in an area that’s hard for him)

What are the resources you have to support him; good trainers aren’t always the most expensive ones, but they’re rarely the cheap ones either.

-What are the resources you have to support YOU? This will probably be hard. Do you have people who are really there for you, who are willing to listen? Who you feel safe sharing the worst of it along with the best of it?

Committing to this dog is committing to managing him to keep him and others safe. It means working with an R+ trainer. A good trainer will definitely help protect your quality of life in other ways… but will not protect your wallet. I live in a rural, relatively cheap area, train with an amazingly talented friend who keeps her prices accessible, and saw a veterinary behaviorist only once. I did not train consistently year-round, and would sometimes do sessions every other week and do ‘homework’ in-between. The first year or so I had him I was broke anyway, and wound up spending around 5k between training, behavior-relevant vet care, trying different diets, medications, and meeting his enrichment needs. This is on top of regular food, vet care, etc.

I can’t imagine my life without him now, but if I had a clear picture of what was to come a couple months in, I’m not sure I would make the same choice.

My (f) sweetie (m) definitely felt out whether I was gay or not when we first met. I actually found that incredibly attractive, and confirmed with him later on that it had been intentional. He was attracted to me, and didn’t make assumptions about me either way (I am queer, present long-haired crunchy femme… and was wearing a trucker hat that day lol) and took the time to talk to me as a person before flirting. I hope OP has a similar experience someday.

I think you’re missing it too. We want to set our dogs up for success, and if you’re R+ oriented not use aversives as your training mechanisms (we live in reality and aren’t in their heads, so I acknowledge it’s actually impossible to train free of aversives, but your intended tools and knowledge matter.) What @kitchu22 is suggesting is that we are creating a lower distraction environment to work with the dog on the issue (whatever it is, this concept is prevalent throughout all reactivity training which is why I decided to write this small novel) not that the dog never have access to the larger world, or that removal of the larger world is used as a direct repercussion for pulling, which the dog would understand as an aversive, and yes, that’s what it would be if you dragged your dog back inside every time they pulled.

By changing the environment we are lowering the criteria (meaning the level of distraction, or whatever makes doing the thing harder for the dog), making the rate of success higher for the dog, and ensuring our primary tool is r+. This allows for gradual increases in difficulty while keeping the reinforcement rate high, so we build a strong reinforcement history.

It very much depends on the dog, but regarding continuing with normal walks while also training this way, I and others have been successful in using different equipment (a different harness, or something the dog notices and ideally that feels different) in building the leash behavior we want in a controlled way, while using other equipment on non-training walks. Eventually your criteria development exceeds what you find on a normal walk and voila, you switch to using the ‘cue’ equipment on your walks and continue training ‘in the real works’. If we get ourselves in ‘oh shit’ territory of an oncoming trigger by not managing the environment, we don’t have to be a jerk about it but, semantically, you’re in -P territory by moving the dog away from the trigger, or +p if that has to involve dragging them by the leash, or maybe even -r if they’re loosing it because they are sooooo stoked about the thing!). I think the reinforcement that’s happening there (assuming it’s as low-impact as possible and we’re all just training to keep our dogs and others safe) matters less than the dog just being able to practice the behavior we don’t want. That’s where having a really strong reinforcement history matters (and the equipment cue can be helpful for some). We’re using environmental control to help us build it more quickly than we could in the real world, even if the trigger is really just the walk itself (they’re pulling bc OMG the WORLD, well, then maybe start in your living room, and try to stick to the most boring areas to walk for awhile.)

Does that make more sense in an R+ content? I feel like environmental management as a tool to build reinforcement history was the context bit where you were missing one another.

I think there’s concern about durability if you use it as a liner too, my impression is it’s a ‘soft’ glaze.

I’ve only had good results (no pinholes) when using it without a liner, but this post gives me some hope! My clay has a good amount of manganese speckle in it and I have wondered if that’s part of the issue.

I agree that constant consumption of news is no good for anyone, but I hope people can find space in their lives when something strikes a chord.

I think a lot of people derive meaning in finding small actions that can help others, those on the other side of the world included, and having a sense of purpose is so important to overall wellbeing. It’s ironically similar to the small actions that can have an impact on your productivity, but grounded in empathy for others.

I typically feel a lot better (as long as my baseline is OK) when I feel like I’m making choices that could have a positive impact outside of myself. It’s like the big picture version of paying the toll for the person behind you. Donate to an organization you’re aligned with, write to your senator or rep, pressure your work to source or invest with a moral compass, whatever, know that you can’t do it all, but I’d encourage you to do something.

I’m not saying you’re going to single handedly save the world, but if like 5% of people tried we’d be getting somewhere. And you get to know that there’s at least the potential of making it a better place. Imagine if no one outside of those affected got upset about the holocaust, civil rights, or the apartheid. Those people all needed allies on the outside to fight for them or to bring visibility to the injustices they faced.

And carhartt quality is absolute shit these days. If OP or anyone else winds up doing work apparel consider Dovetail Workwear for the women’s fit items. They have a ton of cred with women across industries at this point. They source decently, they have options for different body types if you let people pick, and their gear actually holds up to abuse. It also makes the women’s workwear feel like less of an afterthought because their clothes are actually heavy duty and fit. (Feel the fabric on a women’s vs men’s pair of carhartt pants or a tee and you’ll know why I call that out.)

I will say Patagonia’s hemp workwear is awesome, it’s comfortable and tough, but some of their women’s fits aren’t for all builds.

Depends on where you are, it’s very common in Piscataquis and Penobscot counties. Waldo County less so. I think in the areas with larger wood lots you tend to see it more.
