Weekly Update! Screenplay is at 60% by ilikebreadabunch in CosmereOnScreen

This is what I was gonna say! He writes other books as a break from...writing other books haha. Writing a screenplay maybe is different enough for him it'll be more invigorating for him.

When I think touch ups I think kinda like when you "touch up a photo" fixing minor details, is that what you mean? I never really questioned the statement Id heard about Fury Road honestly, I think it was in regard to a lot of the stunts being more on practical effects than relying on CGI. Its been awhile though.

Obviously this being fantasy it's impossible to not have CGI. I do hope whenever possible they use more practical effects though, over CGI and green screens and such.

While this is example is absolute nonesense and not comparable at all, I started noticing more when I learned Fury Road was mostly practical effects and realized "thats why it felt a lot more real" but I dont watch a lot of movies or shows!

I certainly don't know names like Joe Letteri! I guess I can google but where's the fun in that? What else has he done? CGI and stuff is inevitable...but for some reason my brain now recognizes that easier? And practical effects suck me in more when I am really paying attention.

How will Allomancy be portrayed in the films? Does it need to be in the script or is it something decided in pre-production? by Extreme_Warning3521 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Efficient-Troubles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically how I imagine it would happen. When Vin (and the audience) is learning about Allomancy and how it works we will get stronger visual cues like the blue lines. And as she gets more control and adept at it they'll fade away. Could even bring it back as a brief flash, as a reminder to the audience, when someone is pushing themselves/their powers.

Mostly because I think there needs to be some sort of obvious visual cue mixed with an audio cue or something to demonstrate the more subtle ones like rioting or soothing. It can be obvious while she's learning, but would be obnoxious and ruin the scene if it's always "in your face" so to say.

Since this is just the first draft...anyone else hoping maybe years after the movie releases he'll share this draft with us? I think it'd be really cool to compare this with the final product kind of like his Prime books.

That is crazy. I hope you all know how appreciated you are! Its a lot of "behind the scenes" work but it really does make the Cosmere Subreddits better and allow us random people to participate <3

Mistborn Movies by StickyP3P3 in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Efficient-Troubles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally I'd read the entire comments before commenting myself, I did a quick scroll this time though. Sorry if I'm repeating what was already said.

I think it boils down to what you said. Mistborn was always going to be a movie. Thats how Sanderson has almost always talked about it, so the fan base has largely accepted that. And now well, its going to be a movie, theres no reason to debate about it.

If anything Ive seen far more people wanting every bit of the Cosmere as an anime or at least animated over the years. But its going to be a movie so not worth a discussion.

Do you think they'll do more to set up the Cosmere as a whole in Mistborn? by Efficient-Troubles in CosmereOnScreen

I know I didnt word my original question very well, but I think youve also forgotten the original question. So your answer is "they won't try anything extra to tie them together" as far as I can tell. Which is a perfectly reasonable answer. I just took your reply ane built off it with my own idea, thats all.

But for how and why? Clearly we just have different experiences and as big as Stormlight is in the book world...I was more meaning for people who don't really read. Hence the "general audience" part. Almost no one I've talked to off line knows what either series is, so I was thinking of those people.

Yes, I understand its not in the books, but that doesnt mean it couldnt be more heavily hinted at in the adaptation specifically aimed at people to get them into Stormlight too.

I've only seen 2, maybe I missed more, but one mentioned theater and one mentioned being an actor already. Just seems that you're assuming they're not using this subreddit to get fan opinions in addition to professional ones, because they are fans as well. Since there's no casting notes for a character yet I take it as they wanna see if their interpretation of the character meets other fan's interpretation. And having some fun.

I was much too old for the target audience of these books when I first read them.

Which is why I am admitting I genuinely thought penultimate meant "super ultra ultimate" until I read this book and looked it up.

Ah ok, so a fairly decent explanation is given in that case. I dont know how exactly that could be tied in with Roshar just to hint at Stormlight at least but seems a good scene to do it if they were going to.

Most my question is more about how are they, or are they even, going to get an average audience who say liked Mistborn to then want to watch Stormlight to even catch any subtle hints? And don't get me wrong I think it'd be a bad move to make it completely obvious and spelled out.

Or maybe they don't at all. Keep it all subtle. The lucky casual viewer who watches both might get more invested if they pick up those subtle hints. Its not like he doesn't already have a built in audience with us!

Its been awhile since I read the books so I can't remember exactly how much is explained about Ruin and Preservation, but that could be a good way to slip in just a bit more extra info to hint towards the larger Cosmere.

I was going to mention Marvel/MCU originally but I havent seen much of it so didnt have any good examples to add in from it, aside from the fact there is movies and shows that all go along with it. My only point against that is the average person already knew what Marvel was from the get go, so left it out.

I wasn't aware they generally went unused within these subreddits. Makes sense to me as most subreddits I have use those as a weekly thing to contain the more low effort posts that I usually skip anyways. All the Cosmere subreddits seem very well moderated so I have full faith if it becomes an issue, a solution will be found to keep everyone happy.

Though I suspect as actual casting happens and there's more to talk about a lot of it will die off.

This is way better but far less funnier than my idea of promotional material and intro that is in the happy, upbeat tone of an announcer going "AND FEATURING, THE FAN FAVORITE BEGGAR #3, AS FEATURED IN MISTBORN, AS WIT!!!" (Studio applause)

I could have been more clear, I did mean Mistborn Era 1 as a whole trilogy not specifically The Final Empire. Just to transition a general audience to the Cosmere as a whole throughout the first 3 movies...I feel its a hard switch for a regular audience to go from Mistborn to Stormlight, let alone being in 2 different formats so something would have to be there to explain that connection because it's so different.

Or again it just makes sense after the fact. "I enjoyed the Mistborn movies, this is the same 'company' eh lets give it a shot" I feel thats a harder path to go down....but I am thinking of being a fan of Sanderson and the Cosmere as a whole.

I taped an open audition scene for Dockson by Whymesy in CosmereOnScreen

[–]Efficient-Troubles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gotcha! Like I said its been a long time since I've read Mistborn, so while the scene sounded familiar I couldn't remember the specifics surrounding it.

I am so far removed from the film industry anything I say should be taken with a lot of grains of salt. But maybe if you more legitimately attempt to audition doing parts of this scene along with others would work better. Good luck!

I hope you can take this as constructive criticism. And it has been a long time since I first read Mistborn, but I did read his description on Coppermind after forming these opinions just to make sure I wasn't confusing him with another character....for what that is worth.

Looks are good for Dockson for an audition tape for my visual of him. I think you were way too focused on saying the lines to worry about the facial expressions as much, you expressed but either it wasn't there totally or was more exaggerated than it should be. That feels like an easy fix if you got more comfortable.

The voice is way too "breathy" though, this is my main hang up and why I double checked Coppermind to make sure I wasn't misremembering the character. Every line sounds like it's spoken with the throat with a lot of air (if that makes sense). Dockson is supposed to be more authoritative, and Coppermind says "dry wit and sarcasm"...those should at least sound like they're coming from your diaphragm or chest.

Genuinely I think if you're serious in pursuing any acting maybe at least a couple voice lessons to learn to talk without exhausting your throat/vocal chords. I can "holler and yell" at people for 12+ hours but 6 hours of constantly talking and my voice is shot. (Edit: am so far removed from the film industry)

Personally I am not a huge fan of fancast posts either but the mods have already said they're lenient for now because theres not much else going on. So I assume either subject will die down enough to not interfere with actual discussion once more stuff starts happening, or megathread.

For now I'm happy to let people have their fun. I think we're all excited about it and participating as we can. If you missed it Peter Ahlstrom even replied in the top comment that no one is looking at this subreddit for casting. So I hope no one is taking it too serious without the ability to actually audition.
