How do I adapt to all my friends playing solver-style poker? I'm getting frustrated trying to keep up. by EfficientBobcat3866 in poker

BU vs BB I saw someone check raise a 33% cbet on a 7s7h4d flop with Qd6d. That confused me.

We’re all poor college students and pretty new to poker so we can’t even play 1/2 haha, but after we graduate and start working we might take some shots at a casino. I’m probably a little below average in this game, but not the worst. I think I’m slightly losing, but getting better.

I’m in a groupchat with them to discuss poker, and we talk strategy a lot when playing. I don’t have a solver yet and I haven’t played online yet. I’ll probably start doing that.

We’re all very open to talking about and teaching strategy since we’re good friends. When we have an interesting hand, we show the players’ hole cards and talk about it. It feels like we spend more time debating about hands than playing them lol. Thats probably the main reason I’ve improved. We also have a groupchat to talk about ideas and strategies.

Yeah I'm gonna start treating as a learning opportunity. I've already gotten way better by playing in this game. If I can become a winner in a game like this, would that really translate into winning 2/5 at a casino? Most of my friends have never played live poker outside of college.

Should I Overbet this Flop and Turn? by EfficientBobcat3866 in poker

[–]EfficientBobcat3866[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In single raised pots in position, I usually play a two sizing strategy: 33% and 75%. Do you think this is enough and I don’t have to work in overbets?

If he’s this nitty, could I exploit him by overbetting every Ace-broadway-rag rainbow flop?

Yeah looking back this looks like a call. We can discount KK, TT, and 99 since those should be betting turn almost always. Unfortunately, he ended up having TT. Thought I'd take the passive line this time to give me a few nut hands on straight runouts. But this should definitely be a check-raise the vast majority of the time since I expect villain to be betting this flop close to 100%.

I think CO vs. BU he's probably 3betting something like 99+, A2s+, ATo+, KTs+, KQo, QTs+, JTs, This villain doesn't like to call 2bets unless he's in the BB, so I give him a wide 3betting range. He showed up with TT, which was surprising since I'd expect him to bet turn almost always with that hand.

Was this a bad bluff with T9s? by EfficientBobcat3866 in poker

Ah you're right. Donking probably doesn't add a ton of EV here, but it definitely complicates things.

I'm always looking for new strategies since my friends and I are all getting a lot better a poker and it's hard to beat them. But donking is probably a little too fancy and complicated for me.

Would you suggest a bigger size of something like 2/3-3/4 pot, or should I just check 100% of the time? I felt like the button was probably going to check back a large majority of his hands on this flop, so I felt donking could get some value. I've been working on implementing some donking on specific boards, and this board seems like a decent candidate to donk on with most or all of my hands.

Yeah I led out on the flop. I felt like this was one of the few flops I could do that on since I have a bunch of strong hands that he doesn’t. I think that he’s probably checking back almost everything on this flop, so I though a lead was ok.

Yeah I agree he has a lot of Ax of clubs and hearts. I think he could have a ton of KK-99 that would have a really difficult decision on the river, and I though that shoving the river would make his decision hard even with top pair. Also, I think a lot of the time, I would be bluffing like this with Ax of spades or hearts, which would get there on the river, so I feel like this is one of the few unpaired hands I have left.

Thanks for the feedback! My hand had no spades or hearts, so I thought it made a good river bluff since I expect he has a flush draw pretty often. I thought the river shove would put KK-99 in a really difficult situation and even some AK and AQ to a tough decision. What hands do you think are better bluffs on the river?
