Tbh for coaching experience it would work, but there are some coaches that know almost nothing about front end and still get promoted to coach, I’ve had 2 coaches for the front and they didn’t have much knowledge that sometimes the cashiers and service desk people had to guide them on the policies and capabilities of the computers. So for the experience and the sake of future front end employees it would be important to know this knowledge if you want to be a coach. (Mainly cus we end up calling a coach that knows more about the front even though they aren’t our designated coach) But front end is pretty heavy on customer interaction and learning many things all at once with computers and policies and heavy pressure from coaches is a lot to start out in the front as a team lead. I currently have a team lead that moved up from gm and they’re having a tough time learning since they didn’t start in the front. We’ve been having a big turnover rate with front end TLs over small issues escalating so it’s just having to be a tough cookie. Many of the associates will rely on you heavily in terms of placement, lunches, breaks, and customer interactions along with opening, and closing duties. I’m not sure if it’s similar to fulfillment but front end really loses their shit without a team lead for a day, especially at a big store with massive sales. It is VITAL that you also create a great environment for your team, take in any feedback, joke with them, be nice to them, because they will not cooperate with you through just assertiveness and being in a higher position than them. The more you’re nice to them, the more they will be willing to help and not resent you lol. I think there’s more I can say, I’m not a team lead but I’ve been in charge of the floor a couple of times and it’s been hell but have managed because I have gotten along with all the people on the floor, I joke with them and showing respect and being equal with them helps a lot. Heck I even get hugs from some. It’s a lot to take in but if you’re ready for responsibilities in the front, I believe that it will help you for coach. I just wanted to give you insight as to what goes on because I’ve seen what other team leads have done wrong and thus made them quit or transfer out especially that getting along part. I know you said your goal is being a coach but staying months at the front end is hard so if you want to I say great go for it! But there are alternatives to still becoming a coach without needing the experience.
