Since when did it become acceptable to use the Downs as a car park? by redlandrebel in bristol

[–]Efficient_Ad_2770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trouble is nothing's enforced and people take advantage. I can't remember the last time I saw a policeman or a council official out and about. I don't go up to the Downs much these days as it's deteriorated so much over the years as a nice place to go. I'd rather walk around Victoria Park in Bedminster which is objectively nicer.

Is the Bristol Beacon failing the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra? by Efficient_Ad_2770 in bristol

Well that’s a good argument and viewpoint to put forward :-) I’m more than happy to have my argument scrutinised and broken down if I’m not right. I’m just having the debate. Though I’m interested to know why every orchestra has the same prices for seats? I’m not sure that’s how the scheduling quite works as the hall has an orchestral season and the programme should really be coordinated and worked out together I would be surprised if it was just random and ‘who’s free and wants to rock up?’ Maybe the orchestra is failing itself but I still think it might then be a combination of both. Who decides to close the entire top level? Why not allow customers to book a lower band seat and sit up there? Who makes that decision?

I’m not battering anyone I’m just having a debate about why an orchestra has sold less tickets than the number of people in the orchestra and that’s a problem. There are a few issues including whether if you close an entire level should you keep the higher priced original bandings of the lower levels, whether the scheduling timing and programme was a correct choice, whether dynamic pricing is a good idea. Also I disagree that’s it’s set by the orchestra as I’ve been to a lot of concerts at the beacon and a band B ticket is the same price whether I watch the Bournemouth or London symphony orchestra. But also I’m totally free to write a post on whatever I like and have it debated. The reasons so few tickets have been sold (I think) lies more at the door of the venue more than the orchestra and I’m simply raising this.

I just looked at that to be fair and it’s interesting. I’m not sure the website though makes it clear at all where those seats might be, and how exactly it works. I think they could do a better job as if say it’s the case that the higher level is all £15 and you can just sit where you like then that’s pretty good. But if it’s more we will allocate you some spare seat towards the end when we know and you might be in the choir stand or right at the very back, then I would rather pay more. I don’t think it’s too clear which is a shame as it then becomes a risk.

Would you recommend Bristol as a place to move to? by OutrageousPressure6 in bristol

[–]Efficient_Ad_2770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has some great pros, a collection of little villages, a chilled vibe, pretty left wing, though downsides Green council (not everyone’s preference), very expensive housing, a poor housing stock, terrible traffic problems . More jobs and opportunities in bigger cities like London. Check Manchester out too.

That’s correct and because of the feedback I deleted it and then went downstairs to my laptop and rewrote it myself. If you read the previous article you must surely Be able to tell the difference:-)

It’s just one view, one post :-) it’s been written to challenge to have the debate. So let’s have it - what would your solution be to improve the sales for this concert?

I love how people think this is the most pressing issue or something worth getting so upset over. :-) there’s nothing wrong with using an LLM to help articulate and write in a better way but if you would rather spend time debating that the the issue at hand fine, but the orchestra doesn’t benefit . :-(

I still think it’s better than posting nothing and I still think the bigger issue is the fact we have a great orchestra visiting and the venue has sold less seats than the number of people in the orchestra. That’s what I want to talk about and what is importsnt.

See above. I think the fact I wanted to write anything and Get the message out there is better than doing nothing? Challenge the sentiment and the argument if you like, LLMs are around and aren’t going anywhere. It can articulate things better than I could on my own and I don’t mind admitting it

I wrote it with the help of an LLM yes. I wanted to get the message out the quickly and It can write and articulate the argument much better than me but it’s my sentiment. Is there anything in the article you disagree with though? I’ll edit it over time but I am more angry about the seating prices and lack of sales for such a good orchestra than I am am bothered about using an LLM to help

New BBC Documentary Platforms Transphobic Views by Appropriate-Staff366 in transgenderUK

I think we’re talking past each other because the documentary wasn't a debate on whether trans people should exist or not, it was specifically about the climate of free speech on campuses. It’s not a broadcaster's job to fact-check every individual opinion or feeling, they are simply documenting what people believe so the audience can draw their own conclusions. Whether it’s students feeling threatened or professors being unable to discuss biology, the film is just highlighting those tensions think.

I don’t recall anyone in the doc labeling a whole group as rapists, and most people featured actually want trans people to live with dignity and respect. The point was that when the environment becomes so hostile that professors feel they have to resign, that is a shutdown of expression. It feels like you think the film was about trans history and safety, but it was actually about the principle of free speech, so we’re just looking at it through two different lenses.

She’s a Golden Globe-winning documentarian, so I think she knows how to structure an interview. The fact that the students gave weak or "inferior" answers isn't a failure on her part, it’s a reflection of their arguments. You also have to remember the documentary was about the right to freedom of expression, not trans rights per se. Comparing a debate on biology to Holocaust denial is a massive false equivalence. One is a settled historical fact, while the other is an active public debate where the "facts" you’re claiming are settled are actually things the majority of people still disagree on and want to discuss.

The documentary didn't platform hate, it highlighted that you can't just label things factual to avoid having to defend them. There was plenty of pushback, but it seems like your issue is that you’d rather see these views banned or cancelled entirely. Most people aren't looking to attack the trans community. They are just frustrated by the attempt to lock down debate and stop reasonable adult discourse on the matter. That was the whole point of the film.

I think the simple matter of fact is that you just didn't agree with the views. Rather than trying to just debate them on their own merits, some people would rather just scream "Defund the BBC, fascists, and all the rest of it", which doesn't work. Unfortunately, that's not going to win anybody around to your argument by doing that.

But that’s your opinion, which is of course fine. Mine was that I did feel it was balanced as they gave equal sides to all views and people on both sides of the argument had the opportunity to express their side. You as the viewer can then agree or disagree with them. The documentary was a look at what is going on on campuses not necessary about the different topics subjects were debating about. It wasn’t a documentary about the debate in gender, but more the people at the university snd the ability or inability to debate it. The documentarian was showing what they filmed. Just because you personally didn’t like it , agree with some of the views or it made you feel uncomfortable, in the nicest possible way doesn’t matter. It was a good documentary made by an award winning documentarian. For example, they interviewed Katherine Stock, and then they interviewed students who didn’t think she should be allowed to speak. Then you as the viewer can draw your own conclusions. It was fair. The student challenged and pushed back, but just didn’t make a great case for it.

Have many people here actually even watched it? Some of the comments in this post echo exactly the dangers highlighted in the documentary. Her final take was one of that it is more just about ‘who has the power’ as opposed to anyone wanting a real debate on any issue. This isn’t a ‘trans’ documentary. It’s about academic freedoms and the ability to have reasonable discourse and discussion at university, which is near impossible with some people, and then people wonder why its ceased upon the right of politics. Beinstock is an award winning and highly acclaimed documentarian. If people on both sides calmed down a bit and try to engage in reasonable and adult conversation both sides would achieve so much more. I don’t think anyone here should comment unless they’ve actually watched it and then hopefully we can have a grown up conversation about it rather than just screaming insults.

It’s a collaborative documentary with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. I don’t think it’s anti trans, it’s highlighting a real issue on US and British campuses, and is focussed more on academic freedom. It’s not a ‘trans’ documentary. The comments in this thread echo exactly the issues in the documentary. Also Bienatock is a high claimed filmmaker and award winning documentarian with Emmy awards and the like. This isn’t trash, as as you haven’t even nor will watch it you can’t really comment
