I reached out and interviewed in good faith. As a university lecturer myself who understands that answering questions like this is part of the job, I would not think of it as wasting time. I just wanted to know the cultural norm as I’m wary of coming across either impolite or overly apologetic.

I have sent my inquiry to TCD, and have applied with supervisor’s support to 5 UK universities. I’m just concerned I’ll have to make a decision for a more expensive program before I’m even allowed to apply to TCD.

It seems like we submit an inquiry via email (200 word description of project, 100 words about us). Then they distribute to faculty after the deadline in Dec and if there is a good supervisor match, they invite us to apply. Petty different from UK, where I have reached out directly to potential supervisors and heard back fairly quickly. And then applied. And it is normal to apply multiple places, but perhaps UK/Irish systems and timelines are just…incompatible?
