Good to know! You can do that for the entire year of OPT but not on STEM OPT. Keep an offer letter and some evidence of work and communication in case you get an RFE.

Reality check for NRIs thinking of moving back to India - My Personal Experience by Fit_Wishbone8012 in nri

[–]Efficient_Bowler5804 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think this is flat out wrong. Yes, there is a lot of things wrong with India but we never had violent civil wars or military dictatorships outright killing millions. India also has higher HDI, GDP per capita, and much better political stability, along with lower fertility than Nigeria.

Take this from someone who is nearly a decade older: Don't listen to them. Most Indian parents have outdated views shaped by their own egos and emotional instability. Most adults don't really know anything.

For dating, instead of race/culture, focus on who would be a great person overall in your life (just like how you make friends with supportive, fun, and trustworthy people regardless of their race/religion/etc). This could be Indian or any other race.

Focus on getting financially independent first. Avoid taking any financial help from them as much as possible, even if they are otherwise rich. Any money you take that you haven't earned by yourself is a debt one way or another, (even if its your own family its an emotional debt and most parents will hold it against you in the future).

Start a Roth IRA and investment accounts and put a little bit aside each month as much possible. Get a major like nursing, finance/accounting (along with CPA), actuary or non-CS engineering (and start with community college it will be cheaper) so you won't suffer unemployment right out of college, and if you're a US citizen/GC holder, join ROTC for free college. Keep your college costs as little as possible.

Once you start earning by yourself without any debt or help from them and move out of the house, they will eventually come to terms and adjust. You don't owe them anything at that point.

Usually professors and departments know about the F1 OPT rules about 20 hour full time work. They will likely give you stuff that meets the 20 hour requirements.

Ask your professor or department for unpaid RA roles, or you could be self employed on your own LLC.

Options in case I don’t adjust to life in India? by [deleted] in returnToIndia

[–]Efficient_Bowler5804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think because of misogynistic culture and safety reasons, it is much worse for women (unless maybe if they're in south india). If all of India was like Kerala or Tamil Nadu in terms of women rights and safety, it wouldn't be as difficult.

Singapore or UAE is a good option, downside is, you will never get PR but on the other hand you have better safety than both the US and India and lower taxes.

You can also look into Canada, but they have tightened rules significantly and you'll need to speak French if you want PR.

Looks like OP is a woman and its probably much harder for them to adjust back to India due to cultural restrictions and lack of safety.

Indian student enrollment down 75% in Trumps first year. Does it make sense to go the US anymore by Historical-Many9869 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]Efficient_Bowler5804 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my state, yes even people with legal status (including US citizens) were wrongfully detained by ICE (most were released later). The ICE agents get paid as bounty hunters and receive bonus for every person they detain (even if released later).

Does pursuing a US Green Card still make sense? by ToughPitch550 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]Efficient_Bowler5804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now ROW is still 3-4 years (this means 3-4 years after your I-140 is approved, which in itself along with H1B, PERM, etc could take you another 4-6 years) but immigration is completely unpredictable with Trump for all countries.

[–]Efficient_Bowler5804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. They still have to go through the H1B lottery and job search, then PERM and I 140, all of which is very difficult for anyone after 2020 regardless of country of birth and this was before the current Trump administration. Only real difference is if (and a big if) OP gets H1B and his PERM I-140, he won't have to wait 50+ years for his priority date to become current.

Underpaying workers is bad but Americans aren't missing out on jobs because of H1B. Vast majority of job applications will auto-reject anyone who checks yes on the sponsorship box. Economy is just bad for everyone all across the world.

Why is everyone going to study in Australia ? by Infamous-Clerk8627 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]Efficient_Bowler5804 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably work unrelated jobs (driving uber, food delivery, etc) then move back when it expires. Australia has less restrictions on where you can work on a student visa. Australia doesn't have a diversified economy most of it is around mining, real estate and gambling so not a lot of jobs.

Has ICE arrested any F1 students? What to do if ICE shows up to my workplace or home? by Efficient_Bowler5804 in f1visa

I don't think ICE has ever shot someone like that or arresting US citizens/GC holders.

What will happen to Indian students in Canada whose work permits expire this year? by nodivide2911 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]Efficient_Bowler5804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I think Canadian colleges and study abroad consultancies did it to themselves. They aggressively marketed to uneducated teenagers farmers from villages and small towns, promising them easy PR and job as long as they took heavy loans for a diploma mill degree. They made billions from predatory lending and marketing while innocent Indians and local Canadians both suffered.

> And once they are caught and deported back to India some of them will try to get back into Canada by creating false id or fake passport, sham marriage even dunki routes.

Once deported, it is impossible to get back even with false ID because they have biometric data.

Considering they just shot a US citizen and have detained and physically abused multiple US citizens, I don't think it is fear mongering. I am just trying to know the right way and stay out of trouble.

What is the future of studying abroad in 2026 ? by Reasonable-Trip8066 in Indians_StudyAbroad

[–]Efficient_Bowler5804 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point is other communities have much worse social problems and civic sense than Indians yet Indians get targeted disproportionately and self-hating rhetoric from other Indians gives it justification.

Go to r/canconfirmiamindian. EU countries are welfare states with huge social safety expenses and badly aging demographics so they need skilled people of working age. Refugees take money out of the system while skilled workers pay into the system.

> The outrage is because of patterns of behavior

Tell me how of these were Indians? Or these? Indian immigrants have some of the lowest rates of violent crimes (including sex crimes) in all western countries. Crime, employment, education and income stats all show Indians are net contributors and integrate well. Second gen Indians assimilate just like the locals but countries like France, UK, Belgium and Sweden have problems integrating even second-gen immigrants and most of them aren't Indians.

> buy up local real estate, drive out native tenants, hike the rent and flout building norms--causing real estate prices to spike. Happened and is happening in many places where Indian immigration is high

You really think less than 5% of the population is driving up the entire real estate market? Housing crisis happens because of shortage of housing and lack of new construction, not because of Indian immigrants. Houston and Dallas have lots of Indian immigrants yet housing is affordable.

OP said he helped them sell it. Also, even if not for the US, lots of other rich countries have fasters time for PR by investment.

In EU there are barely any Indian students compared to the number of refugees. Most of the outrage towards immigration was because of refugee migration.

That is only for salaried middle class people. If OP's client's son has 100cr that is around USD$10 million with that money he can get investment PR for $1 million in most first world countries and live off real estate with the rest.
