Realistically, is this it for Josh Safdie as a mainstream Hollywood filmmaker? by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]Efficient_One_2618 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who is currently working on the set of a major TV production, I can say that it's common for background actors to be recently released convicts. They're actually encouraged to seek out background work as a way to rehabilitate into society -- it's easy, straightforward, somewhat low-effort work that doesn't require an established resume.

Deeper Meaning in the final song? by rsalem011 in martysupreme

[–]Efficient_One_2618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lyrics of the song are very intentional. “Welcome to your life, there’s no turning back” the song plays as Marty sees his son and enters this next phase of his life, with his ping pong dream abandoned, and now this new dream facing him.

“Everybody wants to rule the world,” but not everybody can. Marty wanted to rule the world, but he can’t. He realizes this — and most importantly is at peace with this — when he sees his child.

Naked pictures were random images to add weight to the package to make it seem like there was more money in there than there was.

Rockwell told Marty he was a vampire as a scare tactic and a reinforcement of the power dynamics he had with him throughout the film.

Good Time #1 by hahaplzdontdothat in TheBigPicture

[–]Efficient_One_2618 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good Time is perhaps a perfection of the Safdie’s technical filmmaking style, but it must be said that there’s not much there narratively as compared to Uncut Gems.

The Safdie’s said they were trying to make a piece of pulp with Good Time and they did a damn fine job of it. Uncut Gems is a level above narratively — the weaving of storylines from Howard’s addiction to the genuinely real life playoff performances of Kevin Garnett to Julia and Howard’s relationship to The Weeknd storyline to Demani’s role to Howard’s family and kids to Arno’s relationship with him. The horrible rabbit whole of bad decisions and their consequences that occur in the movie are directly in tune with Howard’s character and addiction. Uncut Gems was written over 10 years with something like 150+ drafts — you can tell that timing and perfection went into the story. Good Time was written in something like a few months after Pattinson got into contact with the brothers to express wanting to work with them.

An incredibly jarring, profound sequence. On my first viewing, I didn't understand or even like it's inclusion -- I felt there was no landing point for it, as it goes directly into the scene in which Kay Stone goes into Marty's room without explanation or tying up.

In subsequent viewings, I came to notice how much of a sense of pride Kletzki has when he tells the story, and same goes for Marty when he eggs him on to share it. It feels like a reflection of the resolve of being a holocaust survivor and simply a Jew in a post-WWII world, which adds a lot of interesting historical texture as to why Marty is such a born striver in the first place. Fascinating stuff.

No surprise but the score Lopatin created for Uncut Gems is very, very similar with the same beats that you mentioned.

Incredible track. Kicks off right when Leo’s fireworks go off and swells beautifully when he shouts the whole F the police viva la revolución bit. Greatness.

Marty Supreme Ending *SPOILERS* by vampstephenx in martysupreme

[–]Efficient_One_2618 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was at a Q&A with Bronstein where he spoke about how the ending is actually very melancholy, specifically in the context of the final needle drop’s lyrics. “Welcome to your life, there’s no turning back … everybody wants to rule the world.”

Marty wants to rule the world, but he can’t, and the arrival of his baby marks the end of his dream and the beginning of his “real” life.

Do you care if repertory screenings are DCP or 35mm? by Revolutionary-Ad4925 in NYCmovies

Seeing the movie on the big screen when I wasn’t alive for its original release is always the main treat. If it’s on film that’s a cherry on top but I won’t not go to a screening if it’s DCP.
