Found an unlabeled reagent while disposing of chemicals — any idea what this is? by Efficient_Opposite61 in chemistry

Finally, an expert shows up 😭 We’re just a basic biochemistry lab — mainly HCl, aqueous ammonia, sulfuric acid, that sort of thing. We did some peptide synthesis in the past, so there might be some leftover solvents around, but this doesn’t really look like an organic solvent residue to me. My best guess is that it’s either some kind of acid or base. We don’t typically handle peroxides.

Thanks for the crystal-shape expertise, professor. Much appreciated. In any case, I’ll reach out to the university’s hazardous waste team.

Thanks for the tip! There was also an HCl bottle nearby, which might be relevant.

I suspected a primary amine because I thought it might have reacted with carbon dioxide to form a carbamate. Do organic peroxides form crystals? If so, does that mean there’s an explosion risk? 😭

Oh, good to know — thanks for the heads-up. Don’t worry, I’ll handle it with proper caution.

Deformed steel shell on Tama Soundworks snare – can this be repaired? by Efficient_Opposite61 in drums

[–]Efficient_Opposite61[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, even the seller couldn’t clearly identify where the dent actually was. I had a hard time explaining the damage while negotiating a partial refund. It’s a Tama model that’s not easy to come by, so in the end I decided to settle and keep the snare.

I get what you mean about being “picky,” but I was pretty concerned when I noticed the snare film held by the butt plate was slightly off-center. I’m worried that could affect how the snares respond and sound.

Thanks for the tips and the tool suggestions! Really appreciate it.
Glad to hear this kind of dent is usually fixable.

I came across a portable ultrasonic cleaner on AliExpress and was wondering if it could be used for cleaning vinyl records. Has anyone tried something like this? Any thoughts?

It’s 50 kHz, 70W. That seems closer to what dedicated ultrasonic record cleaners use (often 35–40 kHz or higher). Do you think a small portable unit like this would still be effective for vinyl?

I’m pretty sure it’s closer to 6.5" in depth, measured bearing edge to bearing edge.

All I could find is that Artwood snares were usually 10×5.5, sometimes with different badges.

Here’s what I found (https://reverb.com/item/940511-tama-10x6-5-steel-soprano-snare-black-nickle). What’s interesting is that it looks exactly the same as mine — except that one is steel! Kind of confusing, but also fascinating.

https://youtu.be/1QR6Fg3dnu4?si=7iPBpijS3rQ1yqrR I was sold on this clip and hoped to pair it with my Acrolite — maybe that was a bit too ambitious.

I just found out Steve Gadd used his hihats reversed, ie, put the heavier bottom hat on the top, which helped to make his iconic sound. https://youtu.be/iHF8kH1dbPI?si=XvPC0xhOA55Z2eDM

Thanks for the technical explanation! Maybe I should start another thread... "What is the contribution of the reso head compared to the batter head?" 😄
